Connect a camera or other compatible video source, capture and encode on the Pi, then send the stream over a stable internet connection to YouTube. Pi 5 uses software video encoding, so test the exact source, resolution, frame rate, and stream duration you intend to use before relying on it continuously.
How the Pi 5 YouTube streaming setup works
The signal path is:
Camera or video source → capture software → Pi 5 software encoder → Ethernet or Wi-Fi → YouTube Live ingest

A Raspberry Pi Camera Module is the most directly supported camera path in Raspberry Pi’s documentation. USB cameras and capture devices may work, but compatibility depends on the exact hardware, drivers, and software pipeline; confirm those details before building around one. OBS is not required by the official Pi camera examples. Raspberry Pi documents camera capture and network streaming approaches using rpicam-vid and GStreamer. Raspberry Pi camera documentation
“Continuous” means every part of this chain stays powered, connected, and healthy. A working stream at setup time does not establish unattended 24/7 reliability.

What you need before you start
- A Raspberry Pi 5 and Raspberry Pi OS.
- A compatible camera or other video source. For the documented camera path, use a Raspberry Pi Camera Module.
- A microSD card or other suitable boot media. Raspberry Pi recommends at least 8 GB for Raspberry Pi OS Lite and 32 GB for desktop editions. Raspberry Pi getting-started guidance
- A suitable Pi 5 power supply. Raspberry Pi recommends its 27 W USB-C supply, rated at 5 V and 5 A.
- A reliable network connection with upload capacity for the selected stream bitrate. Ethernet is a reasonable choice when available, but it does not remove the need to test the internet connection.
- A YouTube channel able to create a live stream, plus its stream key. Check the channel’s current live-stream access and account requirements in YouTube Studio.
You can administer a headless Pi over the network with SSH or Raspberry Pi Connect. A monitor, keyboard, and mouse may help during initial setup, but are not necessary for a permanent headless installation.
Prepare YouTube Live and protect the stream key
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and open its encoder or streaming settings. YouTube’s interface can change, so follow the current labels shown for your account.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, put it in a public script repository, or include it in a screenshot. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio.
- Use the RTMPS endpoint where YouTube provides one. YouTube recommends RTMPS as the secure extension of RTMP. YouTube live encoder settings
- Before the real broadcast, check that the channel can go live and that the intended stream is configured correctly. Account eligibility and restrictions can vary; do not assume every channel has identical access.
Capture and encode on Raspberry Pi 5
Choose a supported capture path
For a Raspberry Pi camera, start with Raspberry Pi’s current rpicam-vid documentation and examples. For other sources, establish first that your capture software can see the device and deliver the required video format. There is no universal command for every USB camera or capture card, and third-party compatibility is not guaranteed by the camera documentation.
Account for software encoding
Raspberry Pi states that “Raspberry Pi 5 uses software video encoders.” Unlike older Pi generations with a dedicated H.264 hardware encoder, the Pi 5 performs H.264 encoding on its CPU. Its ability to decode a codec does not mean it has hardware encoding for that codec. Raspberry Pi’s Pi 5 camera streaming examples use the x264 GStreamer encoder element, with settings such as speed-preset=1 and threads=1, in place of the Pi 4 hardware-encoder element. These are camera/network streaming examples, not a complete, guaranteed YouTube Live configuration. Raspberry Pi camera and video documentation

Raspberry Pi’s documentation recommends considering --low-latency for real-time streaming with rpicam-vid. Lower encoding latency can come with slightly worse coding efficiency and potentially a slightly lower maximum frame rate. Test it against your chosen resolution and frame rate rather than assuming it is always the best setting.
Raspberry Pi’s 2026 H.264 encoding whitepaper reports 1080p30 low-latency software encoding using 60–90% of one CPU core in its tested setup. That is a vendor benchmark under its stated conditions, not a prediction for a complete camera pipeline: capture, muxing, network handling, and other running tasks add workload. Raspberry Pi news and documentation
Because the available capture pipeline and YouTube endpoint details must match your own setup, do not copy a command intended for a different camera or network stream and assume it is a working YouTube configuration. Adapt the official example to the stream URL, key, codec, container, and audio requirements, then verify the result in YouTube Studio before relying on it.

Set YouTube-compatible quality and bitrate
YouTube accepts H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video for live ingest and supports frame rates up to 60 fps. The encoder must actually be able to produce the selected codec and frame rate; do not select H.265 or AV1 just because YouTube accepts it. For a Pi 5 build, confirm the software encoder and complete pipeline support before choosing either.
| Target | YouTube recommended video bitrate | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p30, H.264 | 5–14 Mbps | Platform guidance, not a guarantee that a Pi software pipeline can encode reliably at the high end. |
| 1080p30, H.265/HEVC or AV1 | 4–10 Mbps | Use only if the actual Pi software pipeline supports encoding the selected codec reliably. |
These are YouTube’s current encoder-settings recommendations, accessed in 2026. The chosen output must also fit your measured, stable upload capacity. Use constant bitrate (CBR) and set keyframes at two-second intervals; YouTube says the interval should not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure ingest and advises testing the upload bitrate. YouTube live encoder settings
Start conservatively rather than targeting the top of a recommended range. A bitrate that your connection cannot sustain can cause dropped frames or stream-health warnings even if the encoder itself keeps up. Resolution and frame rate also affect the Pi’s encoding load, so reduce one or both if the complete pipeline is unstable.

RTMPS versus HLS
| Ingest method | What it means for this setup |
|---|---|
| RTMPS | YouTube’s recommended secure choice for a typical live encoder workflow. It is the more straightforward target to investigate for a Pi camera stream. |
| HLS | A more involved playlist-and-segment workflow requiring HTTPS, muxed M2TS, H.264 or HEVC video, AAC audio, and a closed GOP. Google describes it for encoder vendors and high-quality or high-resolution streams, with relatively higher latency; it is not a simple substitute for an RTMPS tutorial. |
Use the ingest protocol and exact endpoint specified for your YouTube stream. HLS requirements and workflow are documented separately by Google. YouTube HLS ingestion guide
Test before leaving the stream unattended
- Run the Pi and camera in the physical location and network conditions you expect to use.
- Test with representative motion and audio, not just a static image or silent preview. Confirm the picture, sound, orientation, exposure, and framing in the YouTube preview.
- Let the stream run long enough to expose problems that may not appear in a short test. Watch the Pi for encoding strain and the YouTube Studio stream-health status for warnings or dropped frames.
- Check that your upload connection sustains the chosen bitrate during the test. If it fluctuates, lower the bitrate or simplify the output and test again.
- Verify the broadcast from a separate viewer connection and confirm that YouTube is receiving the intended video and audio.
YouTube recommends a pre-stream test with representative audio and movement, followed by monitoring stream health and reviewing messages during the event. A preflight reduces avoidable errors; it does not prove the setup will remain uninterrupted indefinitely. YouTube live encoder settings
What continuous operation does—and does not—guarantee
The Pi, camera, power supply, router, internet connection, capture process, encoder, and YouTube ingest all need to remain available for the broadcast to continue. The available Raspberry Pi and YouTube guidance supports preflight testing and monitoring, but does not establish one universal unattended recovery procedure for every combination of camera and software.

Pi 5 Offers lightning-fast CPU speed, a PCI Express interface, a Real Time Clock (RTC) and a power button and runs significantly cooler than Pi 4.
Do not assume that a process restart, power recovery, or reconnect will resume the same YouTube live event. Automatic reconnect behavior, reboot recovery, thermal endurance, storage endurance, and account-specific live restrictions depend on the exact setup and are not established for every Pi 5 stream. If uninterrupted operation matters, test power and network interruptions and the recovery behavior of your specific software and YouTube configuration before depending on them.
Common problems and what to check
| Symptom | Likely checks |
|---|---|
| YouTube does not detect an incoming stream | Recheck the server URL and stream key in YouTube Studio, confirm the selected RTMPS endpoint, and verify the Pi can reach the network. Reset the key if it may have been exposed. |
| Video stutters or dropped frames appear | Check YouTube stream health and actual upload stability; lower bitrate, resolution, or frame rate and test again. Also check whether software encoding is overloading the Pi. |
| Camera is missing or capture fails | Confirm the source works with the selected capture software and that the exact device is supported by its driver and software stack. Do not infer USB camera compatibility from Raspberry Pi Camera Module examples. |
| Latency is higher than expected | Confirm the ingest method and encoding settings. HLS has relatively higher latency in Google’s description; rpicam-vid’s low-latency option may help encoding latency, with the efficiency and frame-rate tradeoffs noted above. |
| Stream stops after a network or power interruption | Treat this as a recovery behavior to test for your specific encoder and YouTube event. A restart does not guarantee that the original live event resumes. |
