To pressure-wash safely, check your washer’s manual, begin with a wide-angle nozzle and low intensity, and test a hidden spot before cleaning the visible surface. Keep the wand moving, start farther away than you think you need to, and stop if the material changes texture, splinters, dents, or begins to etch. Wood and delicate siding call for a gentler approach than sound concrete, and water should never be aimed into siding joints or gaps.
Before you start: reduce risk before turning on the washer
Pressure at the machine is only one part of what reaches a surface. Nozzle angle, distance, the surface’s condition, and how quickly you move the wand all affect the spray’s impact. Follow the manual for your specific washer and attachments; general pressure figures cannot guarantee a safe result on every material.

- Check the manual. Confirm which nozzle, setting, and working distance the manufacturer recommends, and make sure the nozzle fits your washer.
- Clear and protect the area. Keep people and pets away, protect electrical connections, and wear protective footwear. Never point the spray at anyone.
- Choose a broad spray and test. Start with a 40° nozzle on delicate surfaces or a 25° nozzle for general cleaning, if compatible with your machine. Try it on an inconspicuous patch, holding the wand farther away at first.
- Adjust gradually. Move closer or increase intensity only if the test patch shows the surface tolerates it. Keep the nozzle moving in controlled sweeps.
- Stop at the first sign of damage. Lifted wood fibers, a changed surface texture, dents, or etched marks mean the spray is too aggressive for that spot.
Consumer Reports maps 25° to general cleaning of patios, walks, and decks, and 40° to more easily damaged surfaces such as siding and stucco. It does not recommend 0° nozzles because of unnecessary injury and property-damage risks. Check nozzle compatibility and your washer manual before use. Consumer Reports’ nozzle guide
How to pressure-wash a wood deck
Wood can be damaged when a concentrated spray raises the grain or cuts into the board. Consumer Reports’ deck procedure recommends checking the manual for the right nozzle, setting, and distance, then starting at low pressure on a hidden area.

- Begin about two feet from the wood and follow the grain with broad, overlapping sweeps.
- Under Consumer Reports’ procedure, do not move closer than six inches. Those distances are guidance for that procedure, not a guarantee for every wood species, deck condition, or washer.
- Consumer Reports’ surface guide shows 800–1,000 psi for decks. Treat that as its guidance, not a universal setting; use your machine manual and the test patch to determine whether the surface can tolerate the spray.
- Stop if fibers lift or the spray begins to etch the board. Do not try to remove stubborn marks by holding the wand close to one spot.

How to pressure-wash siding without driving water behind it
Vinyl and fiber-cement siding can typically withstand careful washing, according to Consumer Reports’ surface guide. Aluminum can dent, so use the lowest pressure that works and a broad nozzle. Test an inconspicuous area before proceeding.
- Keep the spray away from gaps around doors and windows and do not aim it up into lap joints. High-pressure water can be forced behind the cladding.
- Use especially gentle technique on aluminum, which can dent.
- For wood clapboard on a home built before 1978, Consumer Reports advises having the paint tested for lead by an EPA-licensed lead-remediation specialist before washing.

How much pressure to use on concrete
Concrete generally tolerates more cleaning power than wood, but a machine’s capability is not the same as a safe setting for every slab. Consumer Reports says a washer capable of at least 1,500 psi can clean concrete and that 2,500–3,000 psi can make the work faster. These figures describe cleaning capability, not a guarantee that a particular slab will avoid damage.

Test first, use a wider spray angle where possible, and keep the wand moving. Be more cautious with aged, cracked, decorative, or coated concrete: if the surface changes or starts to etch, stop rather than increasing pressure or moving closer.
Safety precautions that matter with any surface
The CDC warns that pressure-washer spray can cause serious wounds that may initially look minor, throw objects, and cause electric shock if equipment is misused.

- Do not use a gasoline-powered washer in an enclosed place or within 20 feet of a window, door, or vent, as the CDC specifies.
- Get prompt medical attention for a wound caused by a high-pressure spray, even if it initially appears minor.
When to choose a gentler method or call a professional
Use a gentler cleaning method if a test patch changes the surface, or if the material is fragile, damaged, or coated and you cannot confirm an appropriate setting. Consider a professional for delicate or elevated surfaces, or older painted wood clapboard where lead paint is a concern. The safest choice is the method that cleans without forcing water behind siding or changing the surface.
