What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Start by matching the console’s video output to the TV’s inputs. If both support the same analog connection and you have the right cable, connect them directly. If the TV has HDMI only, use a converter or retro video processor that accepts the console’s specific signal and outputs HDMI. “AV” alone is not enough to choose an adapter: identify whether the console uses composite, S-Video, component, SCART/RGB, RF, or a console-specific connector.
1. Identify the console output and TV inputs
Check the console’s model label and inspect its video output, then look at the TV’s available inputs. Do not assume that red, white and yellow plugs guarantee compatibility: the console-side connector or supported video format may be specific to a model or region.

- Composite: commonly carried by yellow video and red/white audio RCA plugs.
- S-Video, component, SCART/RGB and RF: distinct signal types that require a matching input or an adapter designed to accept that signal.
- Console-specific connector: the plug at the console end may require a cable made for that console, even when the other end has familiar RCA plugs.
If the TV has a matching analog input and you have a compatible cable, try a direct connection and select that input. If the TV has HDMI only, you need a device that converts the console’s output into HDMI.
2. Choose a connection route
| Route | Use it when | Check before connecting |
|---|---|---|
| Direct analog connection | The TV has an input matching the console’s signal. | Confirm the cable fits the console and carries the right signal. For Wii, use its supplied AV cable or Wii Component AV Cable, not an arbitrary AV cable. Nintendo’s Wii instructions explain the connection and cable requirement. |
| Composite-to-HDMI converter | The console outputs composite and the TV has HDMI but no suitable analog input. | Verify composite input, support for the console’s video standard, HDMI output and any required power. Elgato describes one converter example that outputs 720p or 1080p HDMI; that specification does not establish universal console compatibility. Elgato’s guidance also notes that some retro consoles produce signals modern TVs may not display. |
| Retro video processor | You need support for multiple analog inputs or more explicit handling of retro resolutions. | Compare supported inputs, resolutions, interlaced-video handling, output and power. The RetroTINK 2X Pro documentation describes a legacy processor; verify its availability and product status before considering it. |
3. Connect the console
For a direct analog connection
- With the console and TV off, plug the console-specific end of the AV cable into the console.
- Connect the cable’s video and audio plugs to matching TV inputs. For the Wii, Nintendo specifies the AV Multi Out plug at the console and the RCA plugs at the TV or other equipment.
- Turn on both devices and select the TV’s corresponding AV input.
For an HDMI converter
- Connect the console’s analog output to the converter’s matching input. A composite signal needs a converter with composite input; an HDMI socket on the TV does not make a different analog signal type compatible.
- Connect the converter’s HDMI output to an HDMI input on the TV.
- Supply power to the converter if its instructions require it, then turn on the console and TV.
- Select the HDMI input used by the converter. Samsung’s Germany support guide describes this general converter-to-HDMI setup for older Wii consoles, while noting that the process can vary with the console and connection. Samsung’s instructions are specific to its regional support context and TV models.
For a retro video processor
- Connect a supported console output—such as component, S-Video or composite—to the processor.
- Connect the processor’s digital output to the TV or display.
- Provide the power required by the processor, then select the matching input on the TV.
For example, RetroTINK lists 5V/1A microUSB power for its 2X Pro; check the documentation for the exact device you use rather than assuming its power requirements.

4. Check compatibility before buying
An adapter’s connector shape does not prove that it handles a console’s signal. Check the supported input type and regional video formats, along with output resolution and treatment of interlaced sources. A product description that says “composite to HDMI” does not by itself establish support for every console or every retro signal.
The RetroTINK 2X Pro page lists component, S-Video and composite inputs and support for 240p, 288p, 480i and 576i inputs, with line-doubled output. It supports only Bob deinterlacing, so its documentation warns that 480i may flicker. The product is marked legacy, and its page says inputs at 480p and above are outside its support.

That page also cautions that some console composite signals may not work correctly. Its optional N64/SNES S-Video cable is for NTSC consoles; PAL consoles need a special cable and must support S-Video. These details apply to that product and cable, not to every converter or processor. See the 2X Pro’s specifications and caveats.

5. Troubleshoot a blank or unstable picture
- No picture at all: confirm the converter is powered if required, the analog cable is connected to its input rather than output, the HDMI cable is connected to the converter’s output, and the TV is set to that HDMI input.
- The TV reports an unsupported signal: the console may be producing a format the converter or TV does not support. Check the exact supported formats for both devices; some retro signals may not display on modern TVs. Elgato describes this issue in its guidance for a capture-card passthrough scenario, so that specific troubleshooting advice should not be treated as a guarantee for all setups. Elgato’s article gives its context.
- Picture appears but flickers: check whether the source is interlaced and how the processor handles it. For the 2X Pro, the manufacturer notes possible flicker with 480i because it supports only Bob deinterlacing.
- PlayStation 3 picture disappears after changing resolution: Sony says an incompatible output setting can temporarily blank the screen and provides a reset procedure to restore standard resolution. Follow the PS3-specific steps in Sony’s video-output guide; do not apply that procedure to other consoles. Sony also states that PS3 HDMI video and audio output requires HDCP compatibility.
