To use a portable SSD, connect it to a compatible port, open it in your device’s file manager, and copy files as you would with other storage. Before you format it, choose a file system that suits the devices and job: formatting erases the drive. The steps below cover Mac and iPhone, the platforms for which Apple provides the applicable guidance.
1. Check the connection and open the drive
Match the SSD’s cable or adapter to a compatible USB or Thunderbolt port on your Mac. A connector that fits does not by itself guarantee that the drive is supported or will perform at a particular speed; check the documentation for the drive and computer if it does not appear. Apple’s overview of using external storage with a Mac is in its external storage guidance.

Once connected, look for the drive in the Mac’s file-management interface. Open it to view its contents, then drag or copy files to or from it. After copying important files, open them from the SSD or otherwise verify the transfer before deleting the originals.

- Capacity Display Variance: 500GB external ssd often appears as around 465GB on Windows. MacOS can show full 500 GB capacity. This is binary calculation difference and doesn’t affect SSD hard drive actual physical storage
- 1050 MB/s Speed: Instantly access to your files with blazing-fast 10Gbps external SSD read up to 1050MB/s and write up to 1000MB/s. LED Light indicates USB SSD instant activity
- Data Security: Solid state drives S.M.A.R.T. health diagnostics and adaptive TRIM optimizing data block management ensures consistent write speeds and extends the longevity of the portable SSD
- USB-C & USB-A Cable: Both cables featuring rapid USB 3.2 Gen2, this USB SSD effortlessly bridges devices, enabling seamless cross-platform file transfers and backup between computers, smartphones, tablets and iPhone
- Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity
- Primarily Mac: APFS is Apple’s default file system for macOS 10.13 or later.
- Sharing files between Mac and Windows: Apple identifies exFAT as a Windows-compatible option. Check the documentation for all devices that will use the drive.
- Existing NTFS drive on a Mac: macOS may be able to read an NTFS drive without being able to write to it. A drive that opens but will not accept files may have a format limitation rather than a hardware fault.
Apple’s file system guidance describes APFS and exFAT. Windows-specific formatting steps are not covered here; consult the instructions for the Windows version and drive you use.
3. Transfer files without losing the originals
- Connect the SSD and wait for it to appear in the file interface.
- Open the drive and the folder containing the files you want to move.
- Copy the files to the destination, or drag them if you intend to move them.
- Open the copied files from the destination to confirm they transferred correctly.
- Only then delete the originals if you no longer need them in their original location.
Copying first is safer than moving files immediately: if a transfer is incomplete or the destination is not the one you expected, the original remains available.
4. Use the SSD with iPhone
On a compatible iPhone, connect the external storage device using a cable or adapter that works with the phone’s port, then open the Files app and look under Locations. Apple requires a single data partition and a supported file system for external storage. Its iPhone external-storage instructions list the supported formats and connection details.

If a USB-C iPhone cannot power a drive that has no independent power source, a powered USB hub may be needed. Check the drive and phone documentation before buying an adapter or hub; connector shape alone does not establish compatibility.
5. Format the drive only when necessary
Formatting or erasing removes the drive’s existing data. Before doing it, copy anything you want to keep to another location and verify that the backup is usable. Do not use formatting as the first troubleshooting step if the SSD contains files you have not backed up.
For Mac media workflows in Final Cut Pro, Motion, and Compressor, Apple recommends APFS. In its format guidance, Apple says to “Use the APFS format for external storage devices like USB drives that you want to use with Final Cut Pro, Motion, and Compressor on Mac.” Apple’s article was published July 11, 2024. A drive sold as exFAT or FAT32 may not work as expected with those apps.

- Up to 2000MB/s read and 2000MB/s write to transfer files fast for a smooth workflow (Performance on Mac and other systems not supporting USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 may be lower)
- The drive's MagSafe-compatible design makes it easy to attach to your compatible smartphone. An additional metal ring accessory gives any device a magnetic surface to attach to
- Supports recording in Apple ProRes at 4K120FPS, and Samsung Pro Video 8K 30FPS
- Includes free access to the Lexar App to easily auto back up your media and expand the storage of your mobile device
- Rated IP65 for dust and water resistance, and is drop resistant up to 3M
6. Set up Time Machine or an external startup disk
Time Machine backups
A drive connected directly to a Mac can be used as a Time Machine destination. Apple prefers APFS or APFS Encrypted for a Time Machine backup disk. A volume used by Time Machine is reserved for backups; if you want ordinary files on the same physical SSD, Apple describes adding a separate APFS volume. Reformatting a disk for this purpose deletes its data. See Apple’s Time Machine disk guidance before changing the drive.

Starting a Mac from external storage
Installing macOS on external storage and choosing it as a startup disk is an advanced setup, not a routine way to store files. Apple recommends APFS for modern macOS, especially on SSDs, and notes that external boot permissions and Mac model considerations can apply. Follow Apple’s external startup disk instructions for the specific Mac and macOS version.

If the drive appears but you cannot write to it, check these issues before erasing it:

- Capacity Display Variance: 250GB external ssd often appears as around 232GB on Windows. MacOS can show full 250 GB capacity. This is binary calculation difference and doesn’t affect SSD hard drive actual physical storage

- Free space: Make sure the drive has room for the files.
- Format: An NTFS drive may be readable but not writable in macOS.
- Permissions: Review the drive’s permissions in macOS.
- Disk errors: Use Disk Utility to check the drive for errors.
- Time Machine use: A volume set up for Time Machine may be reserved for backups.
Apple’s external storage troubleshooting guidance covers these checks. If you decide that erasing or reformatting is needed, first protect files that are not backed up elsewhere.
8. What to check if transfer speed matters
There is no universal transfer rate for a portable SSD: performance depends on the specific drive, cable, port, and host device. Compare the published specifications for the exact SSD and the port on your computer or phone rather than inferring speed from connector shape alone. No benchmark or guaranteed speed applies to every setup.
