To use MySQL with a Minecraft server plugin, create a database and a restricted database user, record the host, port, database name, username and password, select MySQL in the plugin configuration, then save and restart the server. The workflow is consistent across most plugins, but configuration keys and file names vary by plugin and version.

What MySQL does for a Minecraft server
Minecraft plugins need somewhere to store data such as permissions, economy records, player settings, statistics or other persistent state. Many plugins can store that information in local files or an embedded database on the server machine. MySQL moves the data into a separate database service that the plugin reaches over a network connection.

That separation matters most when more than one Minecraft server must read and write the same data. A network running behind BungeeCord, for example, can point its plugin instances at one database so permissions or other supported data are available consistently on every server. A database can also be useful for a data-heavy plugin, but it does not automatically make a small server faster.

MySQL is not a universal replacement for a plugin’s default store. A plugin must explicitly support MySQL, and its schema, migration process and connection settings are plugin-specific.

Information and access you need before configuring the plugin
Have these five connection values ready:
- Hostname: the database server address, such as a host name or an address supplied by your provider.
- Port: the TCP port exposed by the database service.
- Database name: the individual schema the plugin will use.
- Username: a database account created for this plugin or server.
- Password: the password for that account.
You also need permission to create databases and users, or access to the game host’s database panel. The Minecraft server must be able to reach the database host over the network. If the database is on another machine, a firewall and the database service’s bind or access rules must permit the connection from the Minecraft server.
Do not plan to use the database administrator account in a plugin configuration. Create a separate account and grant it access only to the database it needs. This limits the damage if the server configuration is exposed.

Create the database and a dedicated user
Using a managed game-host panel
Panel labels differ, but the process described by host guides is generally the same:
- Open the server’s Databases section.
- Choose NEW DATABASE or the panel’s equivalent.
- Enter a database name and create it.
- When the panel asks for connections from, leave that field empty if the Minecraft server itself should be allowed to connect, as described in the host setup guidance.
- Record the database host, port, database name, generated username and generated password exactly as displayed.
Some panels create the user automatically; others show a separate user-creation control. Use the account associated with this database rather than an account shared with unrelated applications. If the panel provides an allowlist of source addresses, use the Minecraft server’s address when you know it and understand the panel’s network model; an empty field has a different meaning on some hosts, so follow that panel’s own description.
Creating it on a machine you control
On a self-managed MySQL installation, create one database and one SQL account, then grant that account access to only that database. The MPDB guide uses mpdb as its database name; it is only an example name and can be replaced.

The example grants all privileges on mpdb because many plugins need to create and update their own tables. If a plugin documents a narrower privilege set, use that set instead. Never grant the plugin account privileges on every database when it only needs one.
Confirm that the network path is possible
A correct username and password cannot overcome a blocked route. Before editing the plugin, establish which machine runs MySQL and which machine runs Minecraft:
- If both services are on the same machine, the host supplied by the database service may be
localhostor another local address. - If they are on separate machines, use the database host name or address supplied by the provider, not the Minecraft server’s address.
- Use the database service’s stated port. Do not assume that a panel’s web port is the SQL port.
- Check that a firewall allows the Minecraft server to reach that port and that MySQL is listening on an address reachable from it.
A timeout usually indicates routing, firewall or source-address restrictions. An “access denied” message usually means the account, password or account-host rule is wrong. Keeping those failure classes separate makes troubleshooting much faster.
Point the plugin at MySQL
Stop the server or use the host panel’s file editor while the server is not rewriting the file. Open the plugin’s configuration directory, commonly from the panel’s Files tab, and locate its configuration file. Many plugins use config.yml, but the exact file and key names are controlled by the plugin and its version.
- Make a copy of the original configuration before changing it.
- Find the storage or database section.
- If the plugin provides a storage toggle, change it from local storage to MySQL.
- Enter the hostname, port, database name, username and password in the keys documented for that release.
- Preserve YAML indentation and quoting.
- Save the file, start or restart the server, and read the console output.
Do not paste a configuration from another plugin merely because both use MySQL. A key such as address in one plugin may be called host and port separately in another. Configuration names also change between plugin versions, so the release-specific documentation takes precedence over examples copied from forums or older tutorials.
Worked example: configuring LuckPerms
LuckPerms uses a file-based H2 database by default, so no database setup is required for a single installation that stays with that default. To use MySQL, open the LuckPerms configuration and change the storage method in the Storage Settings section:

Depending on the version, the file may be named config.yml or luckperms.conf. Use the file generated by your installed version rather than creating a second file with a similar name.
A third-party example shows an address such as localhost:3306 and a pool-settings block with maximum-pool-size: 10. Treat that layout and number as illustrative, not as authoritative defaults. Only add pool settings that your installed LuckPerms version documents, and replace every placeholder value.

A successful start should show the MySQL storage provider loading without connection errors. If the log still reports H2 or another local provider, the file may be in the wrong directory, the storage key may be misspelled, or the server may have regenerated a different configuration file.
Handle YAML and secrets safely
YAML treats punctuation and certain characters specially. Quote text values, especially usernames and passwords, so characters such as :, #, braces or leading symbols are not interpreted as YAML syntax.

password: "p@ss:word#with-special-characters"- Do not add tabs to a YAML file; use the indentation already present.
- Do not leave a password in a public paste, screenshot or version-control repository.
- Keep a private backup of the original configuration and the new connection details.
- If a password must be changed, update the database account and plugin configuration as one planned change, then restart and verify.
If the server refuses to start after an edit, restore the backup, check the console’s line number, and reapply the smallest possible change. A YAML parsing failure is different from a database authentication failure.
What to verify after the restart
Use the console as the authoritative check rather than assuming that a saved file was loaded. Confirm all of the following:

- The plugin enables without a configuration or YAML parsing error.
- The log identifies the MySQL storage provider, where the plugin reports its provider.
- No timeout, “unknown host,” “access denied,” or “communications link” error appears.
- The plugin can create, read and update a small piece of normal data.
- The database account has created or is able to access the plugin’s tables.
Test with a non-destructive action first. For a permissions plugin, inspect an existing group or make a temporary test assignment; for another plugin, use its documented test operation. Then restart once more and confirm that the change persists. Persistence across a restart proves more than a successful connection message alone.
Using MySQL across multiple Minecraft servers
A shared database is useful only when every participating server uses compatible plugin versions, the same database settings and a schema supported by that plugin. Configure each server with the same database name and account when the plugin’s documentation calls for a shared store. Keep separate databases or accounts for unrelated plugins unless the plugin explicitly documents a shared schema.
Plan the network topology before opening database access:
- Identify every Minecraft server that needs the data.
- Allow only those server addresses through the database firewall or panel access list.
- Give the plugin account access only to its own schema.
- Apply plugin upgrades consistently rather than upgrading one server while others still use an older schema.
- Restart or roll out changes in a controlled order and watch each server’s console.
MySQL does not synchronize arbitrary plugin data. It synchronizes only what the plugin writes to its supported database schema. A plugin that stores some settings in local files may still require those files on every server.

Backups and migrations
Back up both the existing plugin data and the database before switching storage providers or attempting a migration. Keep the backup outside the live server and record the plugin version that created it.
The LuckPerms command lp migrate mysql appears in a third-party excerpt, but it has not been confirmed here against the official documentation. Do not run it solely because it appears in an old guide. Check the migration command and supported source and destination stores in the documentation for your installed version, and retain a tested backup before proceeding.
If a migration fails, stop writes, restore the previous configuration and data, and bring the server back on its original storage. Do not repeatedly rerun a migration against a partially changed database without knowing whether the command is idempotent.
Troubleshoot by the error you see

Change one variable at a time. For example, first prove that the database host and port are reachable, then correct credentials, then inspect plugin-specific settings. Changing the firewall, account, YAML and plugin version simultaneously makes the original cause difficult to identify.

- Use a unique, long password for each plugin account.
- Grant access to one database rather than using a global administrator account.
- Restrict database connections to known Minecraft server addresses when your host and topology support it.
- Keep the database service and plugins updated according to their maintainers’ guidance.
- Back up before schema changes, migrations and plugin upgrades.
- Remove old accounts and access rules when a server is retired.
- Monitor logs for repeated authentication failures or connection attempts from unexpected addresses.
A remote database introduces another service and another failure point. Keep a documented local-storage rollback plan for each plugin, and know where the panel stores database backups before making a production change.

Do I need MySQL for one Minecraft server?

Can every plugin use the same MySQL database?
They can use the same MySQL service, but each plugin should normally have its own database or documented schema and account permissions. Never assume that one plugin’s table layout or configuration can be reused by another.
Why does the plugin connect locally but not from another server?
