It handles the game service, console crossplay, restarts, updates and much of the configuration through a web panel. Self-hosting is possible when you want full control, but it requires a 64-bit Windows-capable machine, SteamCMD, SSD storage, network configuration and ongoing maintenance.

There are two practical ways to run an ASA dedicated server. Managed hosting is a subscription service: the provider supplies the Windows-based game environment, network connection and control panel. Self-hosting means you supply the hardware, internet connection and administration.

Managed hosting is usually the better fit for a mixed console-and-PC group. Self-hosting is most attractive when the server will run continuously on hardware you already own and you need direct access to configuration files.

What managed hosting provides
A managed provider’s current ASA offering advertises servers for Steam PC, Xbox Series S|X, PlayStation 5 and the Windows/Microsoft Store edition. It also advertises crossplay, configurable player slots, map support and CurseForge mod management. Those capabilities are service-level features, not guarantees for every plan: slot ranges, supported maps and mod controls can vary by region, edition and tier.
Check platform and crossplay support before paying
Write down the exact editions your group uses. Steam PC, Microsoft Store/Windows, Xbox Series S|X and PlayStation 5 are separate platform targets even when they connect through crossplay. Confirm that the plan supports your complete mix, rather than assuming that a PC listing includes consoles.

Crossplay is also a server setting. Players still need a supported copy of ASA, matching game versions and access to any required downloadable content or mods. A setting that permits all supported platforms cannot make an unsupported edition join.
Compare slot and map tiers
Look at the advertised player-slot range and the map included at each tier. The current product information notes that some newer maps require a 26-slot tier, so a small-slot plan may not expose every map. Treat the plan’s map list as authoritative at the time you order; availability can change.
Evaluate the control panel
For a long-running world, the panel matters as much as the headline price. Check whether it offers:

- Region selection, so the server is geographically close to most players.
- Update controls that let you delay a restart until everyone has left the game.
Managed-hosting setup
- Choose the platform mix. Select a plan that explicitly lists every intended platform: Steam, Windows/Microsoft Store, Xbox Series S|X and/or PlayStation 5.
- Select a region. Pick the data-center location that minimizes latency for the majority of players. A distant region can produce rubber-banding even when the plan has enough slots.
- Set the slot count. Start with the number of concurrent players you actually expect. Increase it only after checking the plan’s map and pricing rules.
- Choose the map and confirm tier restrictions. If your preferred map is listed only on a 26-slot or higher tier, budget for that tier even if fewer people will play.
- Configure identity and access. Set a distinctive server name, an administrator password and, if available, a player password. Keep administrator credentials separate from the password shared with friends.
- Configure crossplay and mods. Enable the platform combination your group needs, install only compatible mods and record the load order. Every player must install or accept the same mod set when the game requires it.
- Create a recovery point. Make a manual backup before the first major configuration change, map change or mod update. Verify that you can download or restore it.
- Start and test privately. Join from one PC and one console platform, if applicable. Confirm that the server appears in the expected browser, that passwords work and that a player can reconnect after a restart.
- Document maintenance. Set a restart window, note the current map and mod versions, and tell players when updates may take the server offline.
Requirements for a self-hosted dedicated server
Operating system and architecture
The ARK Official Community Wiki’s dedicated-server documentation states that ASA requires Windows or a Windows-like environment and does not support Linux natively. Use a 64-bit Windows-capable host. A normal 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation is the least ambiguous choice; a Windows Server installation may require additional certificate and TLS attention for the server to remain visible.

Valve’s Steam listing (2023) gives the following client requirements:

Player count, map, mod count and simulation load determine the real operating margin. Monitor memory use, CPU saturation, disk space and network upload while a normal group is online. Leave capacity for Windows, SteamCMD, antivirus and backup tasks instead of sizing the machine to the minimum figures.
Network prerequisites
- A public-facing connection or a router configuration that permits inbound traffic to the host.
- A stable local address for the server computer, preferably reserved in the router, so forwarding rules do not break after a reboot.
- Permission to create UDP port-forwarding rules and firewall exceptions.
- Administrative access to the Windows host and router.
The exact UDP game and query ports depend on your launch parameters and current configuration documentation. Do not copy a port number from an unrelated guide: use the ports declared by your server command, forward those ports to the host’s fixed local address and allow the same ports through Windows Firewall.
Install an ASA dedicated server with SteamCMD
1. Prepare directories
Create a dedicated location on the SSD, for example C:ASASteamCMD for SteamCMD and C:ASAServer for the game files. Keep the server directory separate from personal game installations so updates and backups are easy to identify.

2. Install SteamCMD
Download and install SteamCMD for Windows, then open a Command Prompt with an account that can write to the chosen directories. If Windows Defender or another security product quarantines the executable, create a narrowly scoped exception only after verifying the file’s origin.
3. Download the server files
Run SteamCMD with the anonymous account, set the installation directory and use the ASA dedicated-server app ID 2430930:
steamcmd +login anonymous +force_install_dir C:ASAServer +app_update 2430930 validate +quitThe validate option checks downloaded files and can take a long time. For routine updates, run the same app update command during a maintenance window. Keep a copy of your launch script and configuration outside the installation directory so a file repair does not erase your settings.
4. Create a launch script
In the server directory, create a Windows batch file such as start-asa.bat. The executable and argument names can change with game updates, so follow the current dedicated-server documentation for the exact syntax. Your script needs to define, at minimum:
- The map token.
- A unique session/server name.
- The maximum player count.
- Administrator and optional player passwords.
- Crossplay and platform flags.
- Gameplay rates and any mod identifiers you intend to use.
- The game and query ports you will forward in the router.
A readable template keeps each setting visible:

Use the platform values documented for your desired audience. The configuration documentation lists values including PC, PS5, XSX, WINGDK and ALL. Select the value that matches your crossplay plan rather than enabling every platform by default.

5. Configure Windows Firewall and the router
- Start the server once locally so Windows registers the executable and you can confirm the chosen ports.
- Allow the server executable through Windows Firewall on the network profiles you actually use.
- Create UDP forwarding rules for the game and query ports shown in your launch parameters, targeting the host’s reserved local IP address.
- If your router has separate WAN and LAN firewall controls, permit the same traffic in both places.
- Do not expose remote desktop or unrelated services merely to make the game visible.
Port forwarding can fail when the internet service uses carrier-grade NAT, blocks inbound connections or changes your public address. In those cases, ask the provider about a public address or use managed hosting instead of weakening the firewall.
6. Start, discover and test
Run the script and wait for the server to finish initialization. Search from the intended browser or platform list using the exact session name. Test from outside your home network where possible; a local client may connect through hairpin NAT even when the public route is broken. Join with one player, save briefly, disconnect, restart the process and confirm that the world and settings persist.

Crossplay does not remove version requirements. The dedicated server, every client and every mod must be compatible. After an update, a console or PC client that has patched before the server may be unable to join until the server files are updated.

Use a written platform matrix for your group:

Mods add another compatibility layer. Install only versions intended for the current ASA build, keep a load-order record and back up the save before changing the list. Removing a mod can also remove or alter mod-created items, structures or creatures in a world, so test changes on a copy when possible.
Backups, updates and routine operations
Backups
Back up the world save, configuration files and launch script. Keep at least one copy off the game host. A backup is useful only if you can identify its date and restore it; periodically copy it to a separate machine or storage location and perform a test restore in a temporary directory.
Updates
Schedule updates when players are offline. Stop the server cleanly, back up the save, run SteamCMD with app ID 2430930, inspect the log for errors and restart. If a new build changes mod compatibility, leave the server offline rather than allowing a partially updated world to be written.
Monitoring
- Record restart times and unexpected crashes.
- Watch free SSD space, memory use and CPU load.
- Review firewall and server logs after changing ports or crossplay settings.
- Keep administrator credentials private and rotate them if shared accidentally.
Common problems and fixes
The server does not appear in the browser
Confirm that the process is running, the query port in the launch script is forwarded as UDP, Windows Firewall permits the executable and the router forwards to the host’s current local address. Check that a Windows Server installation has the certificates and revocation lists required by the dedicated-server documentation. Test from an external connection and verify that the client is searching the intended platform list.

Friends cannot join, but the host can
This usually points to routing rather than the save. Recheck the public address, port-forwarding target and firewall profile. Carrier-grade NAT or a blocked inbound connection can prevent outside players from reaching a home host; obtain a public address or move the server to managed hosting.
Console players cannot connect
Verify that the server’s crossplay value includes the console platform, that the hosting plan supports it and that all clients are on the same game version. A PC-only setting will not accept Xbox or PlayStation connections.
Players are kicked after an update
Stop the server, update the dedicated files, check mod versions and restart during a planned window. Do not mix an old server build with newly patched clients.
The server becomes unstable as the group grows
Reduce unnecessary mods or player slots, move the installation and saves to an SSD, close competing workloads and measure memory, CPU and upload usage. The 16 GB minimum and 32 GB recommended figures from Steam describe the client, so they should not be treated as a hard ceiling for a busy server.
Licensing and commercial use
The community dedicated-server documentation states that, unless you obtain a dedicated-server license from the managed provider, ASA dedicated servers are intended for personal, non-commercial hosting. Monetary gains are restricted except for qualifying donations or amounts that do not exceed operating costs. If you plan to charge access, sell in-game benefits or operate a public business, review the current license and EULA before accepting money; rules can change and a hosting plan alone does not grant commercial rights.
