You can run a prerecorded YouTube live stream from a Mumbai VPS by looping a video with an encoder such as FFmpeg and sending its output to YouTube over RTMPS. The VPS must sustain the chosen encoding workload and outbound transfer continuously; a Mumbai location or advertised port speed alone does not guarantee that. This guide covers the self-managed setup and its checks. It assumes one prerecorded feed, not a camera production or a multi-rendition broadcast.
What you need before setting up the stream
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. YouTube Help says the channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restriction in the past 90 days, and the user must be at least 16 years old. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements; confirm the current rules for your account before provisioning a server.
- A Linux VPS in Mumbai with enough CPU capacity for your selected video settings, sustained outbound bandwidth, and monthly transfer allowance.
- A source video and audio track that you have the rights to broadcast and that play cleanly when looped.
- An FFmpeg build suitable for your source and output format, plus a way to restart and monitor the encoder process.
- Your YouTube live-stream ingest URL and stream key, obtained through YouTube’s live setup workflow.
The publishing path is source file → encoder running on the VPS → YouTube ingest URL and stream key. A VPS provides the machine and network connection; you remain responsible for the encoder, credentials, recovery, and monitoring.

Choose a VPS plan for sustained streaming
Compare plans by the amount of outbound traffic included each month, whether and how traffic is throttled after the allowance, sustained throughput, CPU performance under your intended encoding settings, and support and recovery options. Also consider the route from the Mumbai data center to YouTube’s ingest servers: a nearby location does not prove that a particular route is optimal.
As one provider-published example, Melbicom lists these Mumbai VPS traffic allowances and says speed is limited to 10 Mbps after the included allowance. These are the provider’s claims, not independent performance measurements; check its live terms before buying.

Estimate transfer before committing
For a stream bitrate of R Mbps, continuous output uses approximately R × 10.8 GB of decimal transfer per day, or R × 324 GB over 30 days, before protocol overhead. These are arithmetic estimates, not a provider’s guaranteed allowance. For example, a 14 Mbps feed works out to about 151.2 GB per day and 4,536 GB over 30 days before overhead. Include audio in the total bitrate and leave room for overhead and normal variation.

YouTube recommends roughly 20% bandwidth headroom above the total stream bitrate. A plan’s advertised port speed does not establish that the VPS can sustain that rate or that its monthly traffic allowance is sufficient.
Set YouTube’s ingest and encoding settings
YouTube’s setup workflow supplies the ingest URL and stream key for your broadcast. Its encoder instructions describe entering those values into an encoder, checking the Live Control Room preview, and ending the encoder transmission when stopping the stream. Follow the current steps in YouTube’s encoder setup guidance. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which it describes as a secure extension to RTMP; see YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.

For H.264 ingest, YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and keyframes every two seconds, with keyframes no more than four seconds apart. The following are its recommended bitrates for these common outputs; consult YouTube’s current live encoder settings for other resolutions and frame rates.

Choose settings that both YouTube accepts and your VPS can encode and deliver consistently. A source file’s resolution does not guarantee the server can encode it in real time. If you are copying rather than re-encoding a compatible source, verify that its codec, bitrate, frame rate, audio, and keyframe spacing meet the intended ingest requirements.

Configure the VPS and start a test stream
This is a provider-neutral deployment outline, not a claim that one FFmpeg command or VPS configuration has been tested. Exact package installation, service configuration, and command-line options depend on the operating system, FFmpeg build, source file, and encoding choice.
- Provision the server. Create a Linux VPS in Mumbai and confirm its CPU, sustained outbound capacity, monthly traffic limit, and any post-quota throttling terms.
- Install and verify FFmpeg. Use a suitable build for the source and the chosen output. Check that the required video and audio codecs are available.
- Upload and inspect the source. Confirm the file is complete, legal to broadcast, readable by the service account, and has the expected duration, audio, and video. Play it through a full cycle before leaving it unattended.
- Protect the stream key. Store it in a restricted configuration file or secret store. Do not place it in public logs or a world-readable file. Treat it like a password.
- Configure the encoder. Loop the source as intended and send the feed to YouTube’s RTMPS ingest URL using the stream key. Apply the selected resolution, frame rate, bitrate, CBR, and keyframe settings where encoding is used.
- Start a private or unlisted test. Use YouTube’s Live Control Room preview to check that video appears, audio is present and synchronized, and YouTube reports acceptable stream health. Confirm the intended visibility setting before switching to a public broadcast.
- Test recovery and continuous operation. Check that the video loops cleanly, audio does not drop or restart awkwardly, and the VPS can sustain the chosen settings. Test how the encoder behaves after a process interruption and monitor the stream and server rather than assuming a process supervisor covers every failure.
YouTube’s live-streaming tips recommend testing, checking the preview, testing encoder failover, and monitoring audio and video quality. A process supervisor may restart a crashed encoder, but it cannot by itself repair a failed VPS, missing source file, blocked outbound traffic, or a YouTube ingest problem. A single VPS and one publishing path remain potential failure points.
Keep the stream key and content safe
- Broadcast only material you have permission to use, including music, images, and any embedded third-party footage. YouTube may restrict a stream that violates its policies or rights rules.
- Do not share the stream key or expose it in logs. If you believe it has been compromised, reset it in YouTube and update the encoder with the replacement; see YouTube’s encoder and stream-key guidance.
- Check the channel’s eligibility and the stream’s visibility before going live. Use the preview and stream-health messages to catch problems before relying on an unattended broadcast.
- If you need an archive, plan around YouTube’s stated behavior rather than assuming an unlimited recording: its encoder article says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Verify current limits and consider stream segmentation if keeping archives matters.
Common problems and what to check
