Scheduling a stream in YouTube Studio creates an event viewers can find and receive reminders for; it does not place your lineup on the video itself.
What viewers see: the encoder overlay, not the YouTube event
Your livestream encoder creates the video that appears in the player. Put the schedule in that video as a text or graphic layer. YouTube’s encoder guidance supports overlays and graphics in encoder-based productions: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

A scheduled YouTube event serves a different purpose: it gives you an event to promote, share, and offer reminders for. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, use Manage and then SCHEDULE STREAM to schedule an event. The title, description, thumbnail, and start time are event details, not graphics rendered into your outgoing video.

Choose a schedule format viewers can read

Whichever format you choose, include the station’s time zone if viewers may be in different regions. Consider whether the graphic should stay visible, appear between programs, or change with scenes. Leave essential video content unobstructed, use strong contrast, and check legibility at phone-player size.

How do I add a schedule overlay in OBS?
OBS is one encoder YouTube lists for live streaming. The OBS Project describes it as free and open source, with no watermark or feature limitations, and says it can be used commercially: OBS Help Portal. The exact menus vary by encoder and version; these steps describe the production workflow rather than guaranteeing a particular current menu label.
- Decide what to display. Choose a current-and-next card, a short lineup, or another format. If the schedule rarely changes, a static graphic or manually updated text may be sufficient.
- Create the text or graphic. Use your encoder’s text or graphics tools, or prepare a graphic asset to add to the composition. Make the time zone clear and confirm that displayed times match the station’s published schedule.
- Add it as a layer over the stream visual. Arrange the schedule so it is visible without covering content listeners need to see. If you use a rotating panel or ticker, check the timing and readability during playback.
- Check the encoder preview. Play the actual background image or video and confirm that the schedule stays within the visible frame, has adequate contrast, and remains readable at a small player size.
Can the livestream schedule update automatically?
It can if your production setup has a reliable source of schedule data and a way to feed that data into a graphic layer rendered by the encoder. YouTube’s encoder guidance documents overlays and graphics generally; it does not document a built-in integration that converts a radio station’s program schedule into an overlay. OBS’s general software information likewise does not establish a native radio scheduling integration.

Before relying on a data-fed graphic, check that your station scheduling system can supply the needed data and that your encoder setup can display it correctly. Verify time-zone handling, how quickly changes appear, and what happens if the data source is unavailable. If the schedule changes only occasionally, manually updating a graphic before a broadcast may be simpler to maintain.
Schedule the YouTube event and connect the encoder
- Plan ahead if the channel is new to live streaming. YouTube says enabling live streaming for the first time may take up to 24 hours.
- Schedule the event separately. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, open Manage and choose SCHEDULE STREAM. Use the event to promote the stream, share its URL, and offer viewers reminders.
- Enter the stream connection details in your encoder. YouTube instructs creators to enter its Live server URL and the stream key in the encoder. Keep the key private; it connects the encoder output to your channel’s live event.
- Start the encoder and inspect YouTube’s preview. For a scheduled stream, start the encoder, wait for the Live Control Room preview, and check that the schedule overlay appears correctly in the outgoing video.
- Go live from Live Control Room. Once the preview is ready and the composition is correct, click Go live.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. This is an archive behavior, not a substitute for checking your event and encoder setup before broadcasting.

Troubleshoot an unreadable or missing schedule
- The event is scheduled, but no schedule appears in the video: Event details do not draw an overlay. Add the text or graphic to the encoder composition and check the preview.
- The overlay is outside the visible frame: Reposition or resize the layer in the encoder, then check it in both the encoder preview and YouTube’s Live Control Room preview.
- The text is difficult to read on a phone: Reduce the amount of information, increase text size or contrast, or replace a ticker with a stationary panel. Judge it against the actual background video.
- The displayed program or time is wrong: Check the station’s current published lineup and make the time zone explicit. For a data-fed overlay, investigate the schedule source and its update behavior.
- The encoder shows dropped frames: OBS says a rising dropped-frame count can point to an unstable connection to the streaming service or a connection unable to sustain the set bitrate. Check connection stability and whether the connection can sustain the encoder’s configured bitrate; OBS documents this in its Help Portal.
- You cannot start a first livestream: If live streaming has not previously been enabled on the channel, allow for YouTube’s stated first-time enablement period of up to 24 hours.
