If the basket is so full that food touches, overlaps, or piles up, cook in batches rather than squeezing in more or simply adding time. Follow your oven’s manual for its basket setup, preheating, and any mid-cook stirring or turning: microwave air fryer combos do not all use the same accessories or controls.
How much food should go in the basket?
Use enough food to cover the basket without crowding it: pieces should sit in one layer, with space around them. Panasonic’s instructions for the NN-CD87 put it plainly: “For best results, place food in a single layer and leave space between pieces.” Panasonic NN-CD87 Air Fry instructions

There is no universal fill line or capacity for microwave air fryer baskets. Basket size, shape, and the food chart depend on the exact model. If you cannot spread the food out with gaps, cook a second batch. A longer cooking time is not a reliable substitute for leaving room around the pieces; check doneness using the food and appliance instructions.

Load the oven in the order your model specifies
Before cooking, find the Air Fry directions in the manual for your exact model and identify the approved basket, rack, and tray. For the Panasonic NN-CD87, the specified stack is:

- Put the food in the air-fry basket.
- Place the basket on the wire rack.
- Set the rack on the enamel tray.
- Place the enamel tray on the glass tray.
That arrangement applies to the NN-CD87, not every microwave air fryer combo. Other models may use a different pan or rack, or a different setup altogether.
Preheat and set the controls according to the manual
Do not assume that one model’s routine applies to another. Panasonic’s NN-CD87 Air Fry instructions describe selecting Air Fry and setting a time without a preheat step. Breville’s BMO870 manual, by contrast, says to preheat with its Combi Crisp pan in the high position for three minutes, then add the food when prompted. GE’s guidance describes both manual and menu-based air fry paths. Use the directions and prompts for your own appliance, not a procedure borrowed from a different model.

Breville’s BMO870 manual also tells users to lay food flat in a single layer. Whatever the control path, load the basket only after completing any required preheat step and arrange food with space between pieces.

Rearrange food when the instructions call for it
Some foods benefit from being stirred, shaken, or turned during cooking. Panasonic’s NN-CD87 chart includes turn or stir guidance for its listed foods, and its instructions recommend stirring or rearranging several times when cooking a larger amount. GE may prompt users to flip food. Follow your model’s prompts and food-specific directions; use oven mitts when moving a hot basket, rack, or tray.

- Small pieces, such as fries: Shake, stir, or rearrange them when the manual or program calls for it.
- Larger pieces: Arrange them without stacking and turn them as directed.
- A crowded load: Split it into batches instead of relying on extra time to make an overloaded basket cook evenly.
Use food-chart quantities as model-specific examples
The Panasonic NN-CD87 Air Fry chart lists these amounts and suggested times. They are guidance for that model, not a universal basket capacity or guarantee for another oven, food size, or load arrangement.

Check which accessories are allowed in each mode
An accessory that is suitable for air frying may not be suitable for microwave-only cooking. Panasonic says the NN-CD87 enamel tray is not for microwave-only use. Its CV87/CV88 accessory guidance says included air-fry accessories should not be used in microwave mode. Check the manual for every mode you plan to use—air fry, convection, combination, or microwave-only—and do not transfer a rack or tray’s permission from one mode to another.
Panasonic’s NN-CV88QS guidance distinguishes Combo 1 (microwave plus broil) from Combo 2 (microwave plus convection bake), while its tray instructions set out mode-specific use. Those instructions concern that model; the same mode names or accessory rules should not be assumed for other ovens.

If you need a replacement basket, verify the complete model number and the manufacturer’s compatibility information before buying. Panasonic identifies a mesh air-fry basket for the NN-CV87QS/NN-CV88QS, but that does not establish fit for other models.
Why a second batch is usually the better fix
Overcrowding leaves pieces touching or stacked instead of spaced for the appliance’s air-fry circulation. Manufacturer guidance supports leaving gaps and rearranging food as directed, but it does not quantify how much crowding changes cooking time, crispness, or evenness. When the food will not fit in a single layer with visible space, split it into batches and judge doneness by the appliance and food instructions.
