A fast radio burst (FRB) is a brief, bright flash of radio waves from an astronomical source, typically lasting only milliseconds. Some sources have been observed bursting more than once. Magnetars can produce FRB-like radio signals, but scientists have not yet established one explanation for all FRBs.
What is a fast radio burst?
FRB stands for “fast radio burst.” It is a short-lived signal in the radio part of the electromagnetic spectrum—not a sound wave. Radio telescopes detect these flashes, which last a few milliseconds and can be extraordinarily luminous. Their brevity makes them easy to miss, while their brightness allows astronomers to detect some from distant galaxies. NASA explains the duration and brightness of FRBs.

Do fast radio bursts repeat?
Some sources do. Astronomers distinguish a repeating source because they have detected multiple bursts from it; that does not mean the bursts follow a regular schedule, or that every FRB source repeats.

In its first catalog, the CHIME/FRB Collaboration reported 536 events detected from July 25, 2018, through July 1, 2019. Of those, 62 bursts came from 18 sources already reported as repeaters. This is a result for that catalog’s defined observing sample, not a current count of all known FRBs. The CHIME/FRB Collaboration’s first-catalog paper gives the sample details.

What causes fast radio bursts?
The precise origin remains unresolved. Magnetars—neutron stars with exceptionally strong magnetic fields—are a leading explanation for at least some FRBs, supported by a direct radio observation from a magnetar in our own galaxy. That evidence is a strong clue, not proof that every FRB has the same cause.
A radio burst from a Milky Way magnetar
On April 28, 2020, the CHIME and STARE2 radio telescopes detected a millisecond radio pulse from the magnetar SGR 1935+2154 during a period of X-ray activity. The observation established that a magnetar can produce FRB-like radio emission. It also supports the possibility that some bursts seen beyond the Milky Way come from magnetars. NASA’s account of the observation describes the radio and X-ray evidence.

What later observations revealed—and did not
NICER and NuSTAR studied another episode from SGR 1935+2154 in October 2022, observing the magnetar before and after its radio burst. NASA’s 2024 report discusses possible connections between the burst and changes in the star, but the observations did not establish which factors caused it. NASA’s report on the NICER and NuSTAR observations explains why the event did not settle the mechanism.
Where do FRBs come from?
Pinpointing a burst’s position can connect it to a host galaxy and reveal the environment around its source. Those environments vary, so a finding about one group of bursts should not be treated as a rule for the whole population.

Some bursts are associated with spiral arms
In one Hubble study, five of the eight localized bursts were found near or on spiral arms in their host galaxies. That is evidence about the eight bursts examined, not a census showing that all FRBs occur in spiral arms. NASA’s summary of the Hubble study describes those locations.
Others come from different settings
FRB 20220610A was associated with a compact group of galaxies that may be interacting. Another repeater, FRB 20200120E, is located in a roughly 10-billion-year-old globular cluster near the galaxy M81. That old stellar environment complicates explanations relying only on young magnetars formed in recent supernovae. NASA’s account of FRB 20220610A describes its host setting, while NASA’s HEASARC discussion of FRB 20200120E covers the globular-cluster source.

What remains unknown?
Scientists have not established a single complete explanation for the FRB population. The magnetar observation demonstrates a credible source for FRB-like emission, but individual bursts and sources can differ. Even after studying the 2022 SGR 1935+2154 episode, researchers could not identify which conditions triggered its radio burst. Better localizations, repeated observations, and more multiwavelength evidence are needed to understand how the bursts are produced and how many kinds of sources are involved.
