Yes—a Mac mini can run an encoder that sends a continuous video feed to YouTube Live. For a dependable setup, keep the Mac awake with its display off, configure YouTube and the encoder correctly, leave upload-bandwidth headroom, and plan for recordings and recovery. No setting guarantees uninterrupted service: power, network, or software failures can still stop a broadcast.
What you need before you start
- A Mac mini with a compatible encoder app. For a single prerecorded feed, software encoding is a natural starting point; external cameras, audio inputs, or a more complex production may justify evaluating a hardware encoder.
- A YouTube channel eligible to use live streaming. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s live-streaming guidance; check the current requirements for your channel.
- A video and audio source, plus enough free storage if you plan to record locally.
- A stable internet connection with sufficient measured upload capacity for the stream’s total bitrate.
For a continuously playing prerecorded video, confirm that you have the necessary rights to the video, music, and other material. A technically valid stream can still be interrupted or restricted by copyright enforcement or YouTube policy.

Set up YouTube Live and the encoder
- Enable live streaming. In YouTube Studio, complete any channel verification or eligibility steps YouTube presents. First-time access may take up to 24 hours to activate.
- Create or schedule a stream. In YouTube Studio, open the live-streaming workflow and create or schedule the broadcast. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the event.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password: do not publish or share it. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- Configure the encoder. Select YouTube as the destination if supported, or enter YouTube’s stream URL and key in the encoder’s stream settings. Choose the source video and audio, then set resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, and keyframe interval.
- Use current YouTube encoding guidance. Pick a bitrate from YouTube’s current recommendations for your chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec rather than copying a number intended for a different setup. YouTube’s general guidance recommends constant bitrate and a two-second keyframe interval, with the interval not exceeding four seconds. Its supported protocols and codec options can change, so check the current encoder guidance.
- Start a test broadcast. Confirm that the preview appears in YouTube Live Control Room, check the public or scheduled stream page as appropriate, and inspect stream health before relying on the setup.
YouTube’s event guidance recommends setting up encoders well ahead of a live event: its tips say two hours ahead, and scheduled-event guidance recommends starting encoders 15 minutes before. These are preparation recommendations, not uptime guarantees.
Keep the Mac mini awake with the display off
- On the Mac mini, open Apple menu > System Settings > Energy.
- Enable Prevent automatic sleeping when the display is off, if that option appears on your Mac and macOS version.
- Let the display turn off if desired; the important point is preventing the computer itself from sleeping while the encoder is running.
- If offered in Energy settings, configure the Mac to start up after power is restored. Apple’s Mac mini server guidance notes that sleep can interrupt running tasks and processes and recommends preventing sleep and arranging startup after a power outage.
- Before leaving the Mac headless, set up and test a way to manage it remotely. Menu labels and available power options vary by Mac model and macOS release.
Keeping the Mac awake can increase power use. More importantly, a restart-after-power-loss option only starts the computer again; it does not necessarily relaunch the encoder or resume the YouTube broadcast. Test the full recovery sequence.

Choose network and bitrate settings that can hold up
YouTube says the total streaming bitrate must stay below the available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. Measure outbound upload performance rather than relying on the download speed shown by an internet plan. On a shared connection, other devices and traffic can reduce what is available to the stream.
- Use YouTube’s current bitrate table for the intended resolution, frame rate, and encoding format.
- Test the actual connection during the times you expect to stream. There is no universal upload-speed figure that fits every continuous stream.
- Account for every simultaneous stream, including a backup stream if your encoder sends one; YouTube’s headroom recommendation applies to total streaming bitrate.
- Where practical, wired Ethernet can reduce reliance on Wi-Fi. It is an optional stability measure, not a YouTube requirement.
Record locally and understand YouTube’s archive limit
YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. A 24/7 broadcast therefore should not be treated as a guaranteed complete YouTube replay. YouTube recommends recording a local archive as a backup.

- SUPERCHARGED BY M4 — The powerful M4 chip delivers spectacular performance so everything feels snappy and fluid.
Enable local recording in the encoder if it supports it, then verify that the recording file is growing while the stream runs. Plan where long recordings will be stored and how they will be rotated: the space required depends on recording settings and duration, and YouTube does not specify a universal storage capacity. An external drive can be a useful optional destination, but choose one that works with your Mac mini and can sustain the recording workload.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTest recovery before leaving the stream unattended
- Run a representative test with the actual video, audio, resolution, and bitrate you intend to use.
- Check the YouTube preview and stream-health indicators, then confirm playback on the stream page.
- Watch the local recording file and confirm that both picture and sound are being captured.
- Test what happens if the encoder quits, the network disconnects, or the Mac restarts. Determine whether the encoder relaunches and whether YouTube resumes ingest automatically; do not assume either happens.
- If you use a backup encoder or power protection, test the handoff and recovery with the real configuration. A UPS can help with brief power interruptions but does not solve a prolonged outage or network failure.
YouTube says connectivity disruptions can break a stream. Apple also cautions in “Set up your Mac mini as a server” that “If your Mac mini goes to sleep, currently running tasks and processes may be interrupted.” Keeping the Mac awake addresses sleep, not every other failure mode.

Troubleshoot common interruptions
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| No preview in Live Control Room | Incorrect stream URL or key, encoder not sending, or live access not yet enabled | Check the destination settings and key in the encoder, verify the correct YouTube event is open, and confirm channel live-stream access. |
| Unstable stream or dropped connection | Upload capacity is insufficient or fluctuating, or the network connection is interrupted | Measure actual upload performance, reduce the selected bitrate if needed using YouTube’s current table, preserve 20% headroom, and consider Ethernet where practical. |
| Stream stops after the Mac is left unattended | The Mac went to sleep, the encoder stopped, or power/network was lost | Check Energy settings, encoder status, network connectivity, and power. Test whether the encoder restarts and reconnects after each failure type. |
| Mac restarts but broadcast does not resume | Startup after power restoration does not necessarily reopen the encoder or restart the YouTube session | Configure and test encoder relaunch and stream reconnection separately; use remote access to inspect the Mac. |
| No complete replay of a 24-hour stream | YouTube may not capture streams longer than 12 hours | Use the local recording as the archive and verify its file is being written during the broadcast. |
