There is no single best app for both keeping a YouTube stream running and delivering captions. Treat them as two jobs: choose an encoder or cloud streaming service for the video, then verify a separate caption path that YouTube can receive. First, distinguish live captions from subtitles
Live captions are sent to YouTube during the broadcast so viewers can read them while watching. Subtitles or captions added to a recording after the stream are a separate workflow. YouTube says live automatic captions do not remain on the video after the broadcast; a new caption track for the video-on-demand archive may be generated and can differ from the live captions. If the archive needs dependable captions, plan that separately rather than assuming the live track will be retained.

YouTube’s guidance says, “To add captions to your live stream, you need to send captions to YouTube.” That means a video encoder being able to stream is not proof that it can deliver the caption signal too.

How to choose a caption workflow
When English automatic captions are enough
YouTube live automatic captions may be the simplest route if they are available for the channel and stream. YouTube documents English-only availability and a staged rollout, so do not assume the feature is enabled for every channel or broadcast. Check it on the actual channel before relying on it. Because the live captions disappear after the stream, plan a separate archive caption track if viewers need captions on the recording.
When captions must be dependable or use another language
Plan a professional caption path and confirm how it delivers captions to YouTube. YouTube documents embedded EIA-608/CEA-708 captions and a separate HTTP caption feed. It names Total Eclipse, Case CATalyst, CaptionMaker, and StreamText.Net as supported software or services; StreamText.Net is described as cloud-based caption delivery compatible with speech-to-text platforms. Select a provider based on language, accuracy needs, latency, and support, then test the complete path before a long-running broadcast.

YouTube currently supports one caption track in the described 608/708 workflow, even though the underlying standard can carry more. Each stream entry point can have one caption feed. YouTube’s event guidance also describes a 30- or 60-second broadcast delay for its event caption-ingestion setup; that is workflow-specific guidance, not a universal delay requirement for every live stream.
Choose the video side separately
- Choose OBS or vMix for production and encoding needs, not on the assumption that either automatically solves caption delivery.
- Add Restream only if its distribution features are useful, and confirm normal latency plus the precise encoder and YouTube settings needed for embedded captions.
- Do not choose StreamYard as the sole solution when the requirement is built-in captions sent with the live stream, according to its help page.
- For any continuous broadcast, decide who monitors it, how a dropped feed is restarted, and whether the archive must be retained. Available documentation does not establish a tested reliability winner among these products for 24/7 workloads.
What to verify before you go live
- Define the caption requirement. Decide whether viewers need live captions, captions on the archive, a particular language, or a specified caption standard. These are not interchangeable deliverables.
- Identify the caption signal. Confirm whether the setup sends embedded EIA-608/CEA-708 captions or uses YouTube’s supported HTTP caption feed.
- Verify both ends. Check the encoder or caption provider’s exact output configuration and YouTube’s stream settings. A compatible label alone does not confirm that the end-to-end route works.
- Run a test broadcast. Check that captions appear for viewers, arrive at acceptable latency, and use the intended language. If an archive matters, inspect the recording afterward and arrange a separate caption track if necessary.
- Plan operations and retention. Set monitoring and recovery procedures, and establish whether uninterrupted broadcasts need an archive or should be split into shorter streams.
Continuous streaming and archive limits
Continuous transmission and archive retention are different. Restream’s Help Center, in guidance dated July 9, 2026, says YouTube does not limit stream duration but archives streams only when they are under 12 hours. This is Restream’s description of YouTube behavior, not a guarantee that every long broadcast will be archived; recheck current platform behavior before building an archive plan around one uninterrupted stream.
