Settings and drying targets differ by model, so follow your tool’s manual rather than treating any one temperature or dryness percentage as universal.
Prepare your hair and tool
Detangle towel-dried hair and divide it into manageable sections. Apply heat protectant if your tool’s manufacturer recommends it; Revlon includes this step in its VersaStyler instructions. Heat protectant does not make styling damage-free, so use the tool as directed and avoid unnecessary passes.

Check whether your brush has separate drying and styling modes, and identify its heat and airflow controls before you begin. A multi-mode brush may have a concentrator or dryer setting for rough-drying and a brush setting for shaping; other tools may work differently.
Rough-dry before shaping
Use the dryer or rough-dry mode first, if your model has one. Revlon’s VersaStyler guide recommends rough-drying to about 80% dry; Dyson’s Airwrap guide gives about 85% dry as its example. Those are device-specific instructions, not a universal target for every hot air brush. Use the target in your own tool’s manual, and avoid shaping hair while it is very wet unless the manufacturer says to.
#1 Best Overall
- Full-bodied blowouts: The 2.8 in oval barrel smooths hair while rounded edges help create lift, volume, and curled ends
- Best for longer lengths: Choose this larger-barrel dryer brush for mid-length to long hair and a classic, high-volume blowout
- Dry and style in 1 step: Use on damp hair to dry, smooth, and volumize without juggling a separate dryer and round brush
- Control your finish: Select Cool, Low, or High to tailor airflow and heat to your styling needs
- Smooth with tension: Nylon pins and tufted bristles help grip and guide hair for controlled styling from roots to ends
Use the hot air brush for a smooth, voluminous finish
- Choose a manageable section. Revlon’s VersaStyler instructions use sections 2–3 inches wide. That is a model-specific example; use narrower sections if your hair is thick or difficult to control.
- Start near the roots. Place the brush beneath the section and lift the hair away from the scalp to create root volume. Dyson’s Airwrap guide likewise demonstrates lifting sections from underneath.
- Guide the brush down the hair. Move slowly and steadily from roots through the lengths rather than holding the brush in one place. Keep the hair under light, even tension; do not pull hard at the scalp.
- Shape the ends. For a rounded, bouncy finish, gently turn the brush through the ends. To add lift and direct the ends away from the face, angle them up and out as you finish the section.
- Cool the shape. Use the tool’s cool setting or cool shot on the finished section before moving on. Revlon specifies cool mode for its VersaStyler; Dyson gives 5–10 seconds as an Airwrap example. Follow your model’s instructions for how to use its cooling function.
Repeat section by section until the hair is dry and styled. Keep the brush moving, especially around the ends, which can receive prolonged heat when wrapped or held in place.
Choose heat and airflow conservatively
Start with the low heat setting and increase it only if needed, as directed by your tool’s manual. Revlon advises: “Slowly increase heat setting as needed to help prevent damage.” Its VersaStyler page lists a maximum air temperature of 212°F for that product and notes that damage varies by hair condition; neither figure should be applied to other hot air brushes.

- Closer-to-root styling: The smaller 2.4 in oval barrel offers added control for root lift, soft waves, flips, and curls
- Best for shorter lengths: Choose Volumizer Plus for chin length to mid-length hair or when you want more precision than a 2.8 in barrel
- 6 heat settings: Select Cool, Low, Medium, or High for more styling control across drying, shaping, and refreshing
- Detachable for storage: Remove the brush head for compact storage and easier packing; the detachable design also enables dryer use
- Detangle and smooth: Charcoal-infused pins and tufted bristles help detangle, grip, and guide hair while creating a polished finish
Use the lowest setting that gives you the control and finish you want. Hair condition, texture, section size, and the brush design all affect how much heat or airflow is useful. No setting can guarantee that hair will not be damaged.

What to check if the result is not right
- Hair looks puffy or remains damp: Rough-dry more before shaping, then work with smaller sections so airflow and brush contact can reach the hair evenly.
- Roots look flat: Place the brush beneath the root and lift the section away from the scalp before guiding it down.
- Ends look too straight: Gently turn the brush through the ends during the final part of the pass rather than pulling straight through.
- Hair feels excessively hot or snagged: Stop and check the tool’s manual, section size, and technique. Do not force tangled hair through the brush or hold heat on one spot.
Follow the instructions for your specific model
Hot air brushes are not interchangeable in how they operate. Before choosing a tool, check whether it has a dedicated rough-dry mode, which heat and airflow settings it offers, whether its brush shape reaches the roots comfortably, and whether the manufacturer provides model-specific styling instructions.

Instructions for adjacent tools may not transfer. For example, Dyson’s Airsmooth guidance describes using a leave-in conditioning spray on damp hair, then gliding its straight edge downward for smoothing or using its curved edge for waves and flicks. That is guidance for the Airsmooth, not a substitute for instructions for a conventional hot air brush.
