Compare mutual fund schemes, not AMC brands in isolation. Start with your goal and risk capacity, then compare schemes with compatible categories and mandates using current factsheets, Scheme Information Documents (SIDs), portfolios, costs, risk disclosures and performance over matching periods. An AMC’s name—or a recent winning return—cannot establish that a scheme is right for you.
Start with your goal, time horizon and loss capacity
Before looking at fund houses, note what the investment is for, when you may need the money, how much liquidity you require and how much loss you could tolerate without disrupting that goal. Mutual funds are exposed to market and other risks; they are not guaranteed or assured-return products, as AMFI explains in its investor education material.

Use AMFI’s category guidance to identify the broad scheme type, then compare funds whose objectives and mandates are compatible. Equity, debt, hybrid, solution-oriented and other schemes can have materially different objectives and risks. Ranking a debt scheme against an equity scheme by raw returns does not tell you which AMC is better.
#1 Best Overall
Similar labels alone do not establish that two schemes hold similar assets or carry similar risks. Read each scheme’s stated objective and benchmark, and check whether its actual portfolio is consistent with the mandate.
Use current factsheets and the SID
AMFI’s guide to reading a mutual fund factsheet describes information that may include the scheme name and objective, fund manager and experience, average and latest assets under management (AUM), net asset value (NAV), loads, benchmark, expense ratio, portfolio allocations, volatility measures and performance. Get the latest available factsheets through AMFI’s factsheet directory, and read the scheme’s SID for details that may not appear in the summary.
Rank #2
For a fair comparison, use the same plan type and matching disclosure dates or return periods. Scheme data changes, so note the date of each factsheet and disclosure rather than treating a figure as permanent.

Compare costs using the applicable disclosures
AMFI explains that the total expense ratio (TER) is charged as a percentage of average NAV, affects NAV and is disclosed daily. Its current TER disclosure interface offers scheme-level filters and describes Base Expense Ratio (BER) and brokerage-cost information under the 2026 regulations. Check the applicable definitions, scheme, plan and date shown; do not substitute an older expense limit or figure for a current disclosure.
Compare equivalent schemes and plans, and check exit-load terms in the current scheme material. A lower cost is one consideration, not proof of better management or a better fit for your goal.
Assess portfolio, risk and performance together
Look beyond the Riskometer
The Riskometer is a useful starting point, not a complete comparison. AMFI cautions that schemes displaying the same risk level may not be similar in nature. Examine the portfolio, asset allocation, benchmark, fund manager and relevant risk measures as well as the displayed level.
Rank #4
Compare returns over matching periods
Compare schemes over the same stated periods and against their relevant benchmarks. A short-term ranking can change with market conditions and does not show that a recent winner will remain one. AMFI states: “Past performance does not guarantee future performance of any Mutual Fund Scheme.” Historical returns are context for comparison, not a prediction or guarantee.
Evaluate AMC-level factors only where evidence is comparable
Scheme documents and disclosures support a more direct comparison of scheme features than a broad ranking of AMC governance, complaint handling, customer service or operational resilience. If those firm-level factors matter to you, investigate them using current official disclosures and comparable evidence; do not infer an AMC’s standing from its brand reputation or from one scheme’s returns.
Best Value
If you need help interpreting a factsheet or SID, AMFI says an adviser may help. That statement does not verify the credentials, compensation or suitability of any particular adviser or service.
Quick Recap
A practical comparison checklist
- Write down your investment goal, expected holding period, liquidity needs and capacity for loss.
- Select schemes with compatible categories, objectives and mandates; identify each scheme’s benchmark.
- Download current factsheets and read the relevant SIDs. Record the disclosure date and use the same plan type.
- Compare portfolio and asset allocation, manager information, AUM, benchmark, risk measures and Riskometer level.
- Compare performance over matching periods, alongside the relevant benchmark, treating returns as historical.
- Check the applicable TER or BER disclosures and exit-load terms for each scheme and plan.
- Investigate AMC-level service or governance questions separately, using current evidence that can be compared fairly.
