You can’t connect a Google Drive folder directly to YouTube Live as a playlist. Instead, let playback software on a computer read the Drive files, play them in the order you choose, and send one continuous program feed through an encoder to YouTube. Drive holds the source files; playback software controls the playlist; the encoder delivers the live feed.
How the Drive-to-YouTube workflow works
A YouTube video playlist is a queue of uploaded YouTube videos. A YouTube Live event receives a single encoded audio/video feed from an encoder. A Drive folder is neither of those: it stores files and manages access to them. The practical setup is therefore:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Make the podcast files available to the computer running playback.
- Use playback or automation software to play them in the desired order and produce a continuous output.
- Connect an encoder to a YouTube Live event using its stream URL and stream key.
- Start the encoder and monitor the event.
Google’s Drive and YouTube’s live-streaming guidance describes these separate roles; it does not document an automatic conversion from a Drive folder into a YouTube Live playlist. The exact playlist, looping, and unattended-recovery behavior depends on the playback software you choose, so test those functions in that software before relying on them.
Prepare the podcast files and Drive access
Check the folder and playback account
Sign in to Drive on the computer that will run playback and confirm that the account can open every episode. Google Drive folder permissions are inherited by files and subfolders, including items added later. Review who can access the folder before sharing it, especially if you use “anyone with the link.” See Google Drive’s folder-sharing guidance.

Choose streaming or mirroring in Drive for desktop
Drive for desktop can stream files, keeping them primarily in the cloud and using less local disk space, or mirror My Drive, which keeps a full local copy and uses local storage. Streaming depends on a reliable internet connection and files being available as playback requests them. Mirroring uses more disk space but gives playback a local copy. Choose based on your connection, available storage, and how costly an interruption would be; verify the files are available before the broadcast. Google explains these options in its Drive for desktop file-streaming and mirroring guidance.
Confirm compatibility and playlist behavior
Check that the chosen playback software can open your file formats, arrange episodes in the intended order, and produce the kind of continuous audio/video output your encoder accepts. If you want episodes to repeat, confirm whether the software supports looping and what happens at the end of a file. These are playback-tool capabilities, not settings supplied by Drive or YouTube.
Enable and schedule the YouTube Live event
Before planning the broadcast, make sure the channel is eligible. YouTube’s current guidance requires channel verification and no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave enablement until broadcast day. Check the current YouTube live-streaming eligibility and activation requirements.

- Open YouTube Studio and create or schedule a live stream.
- Choose a scheduled event if you need a shareable watch page, advance promotion, or viewer reminders. For an immediate broadcast, create or select an event appropriate to your channel workflow.
- In the stream’s settings, locate the stream URL and stream key. The precise labels or layout can change; use YouTube Studio’s current encoder setup instructions if the controls differ.
YouTube describes scheduled streams and encoder setup in its encoder guide. A scheduled event is useful for promotion, but it does not create or manage the episode playlist for you.
Connect playback and the encoder
- Open the playback software and load the podcast episodes in the sequence you want viewers to hear. If the show should continue beyond the final episode, configure and test the desired repeat or next-item behavior.
- Set the playback output so the encoder receives the intended audio and, if applicable, video or a static visual. Play a representative episode and check that sound is present and at the right level.
- In the encoder, enter the YouTube stream URL as the server or ingest address and the stream key in the key field. YouTube supports software and hardware encoders; it does not prescribe one particular playback application for this Drive-folder workflow. Its live streaming tips cover encoder options and setup considerations.
- Keep the stream key private: it is the credential that lets an encoder connect to the channel’s event. If you think it has been exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- Set the encoder’s resolution, frame rate, and bitrate to values supported by your upload connection and YouTube’s current guidance. These settings depend on the output format and frame rate; use YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance rather than assuming one bitrate works for every stream. Use RTMPS when supported for encrypted ingest.
Test the full chain before going live
- Source access: confirm the playback computer can open each episode, including files that have not yet been played during the test.
- Order and transitions: play enough of the queue to verify sequence, audio continuity, and the behavior between files. Test any repeat setting.
- Preview and health: start the encoder test feed and check the Live Control Room preview, audio, video or visual, and stream-health messages.
- Bandwidth: make sure the total encoder bitrate stays within your available upload bandwidth. YouTube recommends 20% upload headroom above the required total bitrate; leave that capacity for connection variation rather than allocating all measured upload speed to the stream.
- Watch-page access: open the scheduled event or stream page as a viewer and confirm it is reachable and shows the expected status.
YouTube recommends testing with audio and motion similar to the intended broadcast and monitoring stream health. Its streaming tips explain the testing and bandwidth guidance.
Start, monitor, and end the broadcast
- Start the playback queue and encoder early enough to confirm the feed appears in YouTube’s Live Control Room before the planned start.
- Start the event in YouTube Studio when ready, following the current event workflow. Keep an eye on stream health, playback, and audio throughout the broadcast; a connected encoder does not guarantee that the Drive files or playlist are advancing correctly.
- When the broadcast is finished, stop the encoder and end the event in Studio as appropriate. YouTube’s encoder guide says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume the same archive behavior for a longer stream. Check YouTube’s encoder guidance for current details.
Common problems and fixes
A file will not play or the queue stops
Check whether the playback software supports that file format and whether the signed-in Drive account has permission to open it. If you use Drive streaming, confirm the computer has a working internet connection and the file is available. Test the whole queue, not just its first episode.

The YouTube preview has no sound
Check the playback output device, the encoder’s selected audio input, and mute or level settings in both applications. Play a file while watching the encoder meters and Live Control Room preview to identify where the signal disappears.
The stream is unstable or reports health warnings
Compare the encoder’s total bitrate with sustained upload capacity and leave the 20% headroom YouTube recommends. Reduce the output bitrate or resolution if the connection cannot support the selected settings, then test again. A Drive-streaming setup also depends on the computer’s internet connection to access cloud files.
The event is not available when expected
Check channel eligibility and activation status, event visibility and schedule, and whether the encoder is sending to the matching event’s URL and key. First-time live activation may take up to 24 hours.

The key may have been exposed
Reset the stream key in YouTube Studio, then replace the old key in the encoder. Treat the key like a password; do not include it in screenshots, shared instructions, or public posts.

DIY setup or cloud playback?
A computer-based setup gives you control over file access, playback, and production, but the computer, its network connection, Drive access, playback software, and encoder all need to keep working for the broadcast. For unattended or recurring streams, validate the playlist’s continuation and recovery behavior in the specific tools you use; the Google and YouTube documentation does not establish those behaviors for a Drive folder.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for keeping a channel live from uploaded videos. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; uploaded videos stream as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
