If FFmpeg reconnects to YouTube Live but your podcast playlist carries on where it left off, that is expected: reconnecting the output does not rewind the input. To start again at the first episode, have FFmpeg exit on the relevant output failure and use a supervisor to launch a fresh FFmpeg process reading the same playlist. Use FFmpeg’s FIFO output recovery instead when you want playback to continue through a brief network interruption.
Choose whether to resume or restart
There are two different recovery goals. FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer can retry a failed output while the same process continues reading and processing its input. A supervisor, by contrast, can relaunch FFmpeg after it exits; the new process opens the playlist again from its beginning. FIFO recovery is not a playlist-rewind feature. See the FFmpeg Project’s FIFO muxer documentation and concat demuxer documentation; details may vary by installed FFmpeg version.

| Approach | What happens to the playlist | Best suited to | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg FIFO output recovery | The running process continues; the source playlist generally keeps advancing. | Brief network interruptions when continuity matters more than replaying earlier material. | Does not intentionally return to the first entry. Queue behavior can also drop packets if configured to do so. FFmpeg FIFO documentation |
| Supervisor relaunch after FFmpeg exits | A new process reads the same list from the beginning. | An explicit replay-from-start requirement. | There is an interruption during restart, and the YouTube event and duplicate-process handling need attention. FFmpeg concat documentation; YouTube stream settings |
Decide based on where playback should be after recovery, how long an interruption you can accept, whether FFmpeg should stay alive retrying output, and whether the YouTube event is manually controlled or set up for encoder control. Avoid configuring automatic FIFO retries and an unconditional supervisor restart without deciding which layer owns recovery: if FIFO keeps the process alive, a supervisor waiting for that process to exit may never relaunch it. This is an operational inference from the separate mechanisms, not a guarantee for every failure mode.
Build a playlist that can be reopened from the start
Use the concat demuxer for compatible files
Create a text list in the order you want episodes to play. For example, a file named podcast-list.txt can contain:
#1 Best Overall
- [Natural Audio Clarity] Operated with frequency response of 50Hz-16KHz, the podcasting XLR mic delivers balanced audio range, likely to resonate with your audience. Directional cardioid dynamic microphone corded will not exaggerate your voice, while rejects unwanted off-axis noise for vocal originality and intelligibility during your PS5 gaming streaming video recording. (Tips: Keep the top of end-addressing XLR dynamic microphone AM8 facing audio source, and suggested recording range is 2 to 6 in.)
- [XLR Connection Upgrade-Ability] To use XLR connection, connect the podcast microphone to an audio interface (or mixer) using a separate XLR cable (NOT Included) . Well-connected and smooth operation improves audio flexibility to make you explore various types of music recording singing. The streaming mic isolates the pristine and accurate sound from ambient noise with greater no interference and fidelity. (RGB and function key on mic are INACTIVE when using XLR connection.)
- [USB Connection with Handy Mute] Skip the hassle of setting something up and plug the cable to play the dynamic USB microphone directly, which suits for beginner creators or daily podcast. You can quickly control the gamer mic with tap-to-mute that is independent of computer/Macbook programs to keep privacy when live streaming. LED mute reminder helps you get rid of forgetting to cancel the mute. (RGB and function key are only available for USB connection, but NOT for XLR connection)
- [Soothing Controllable RGB] RGB ring on the desktop gaming microphone for PC, with 3 modes and more than 10 light colors collection, matches your PC gears accessories for gaming synergy even in dim room. You can control the RGB key button of the dynamic microphone USB directly for game color scheme gaming or live streaming. Configured memory function, the streaming microphone RGB no need to repeated selections after turnning off and brings itself alive when power on. (Only available for USB connection)
- [More Function Keys] Computer microphone with headphones jack upgrades your rhythm game experience and gets feedback whether the real-time voice your audience hear as expected. Get the desired level via monitoring volume control when gaming recording. Smooth mic gain knob on the PC microphone gaming has some resistance to the point, easily for audio attenuation or boost presence to less post-production audio. (Only available for USB connection)
file '/media/episode-01.mp4'
file '/media/episode-02.mp4'
file '/media/episode-03.mp4'
Then point your FFmpeg input at that list using the concat demuxer, for example -f concat -safe 0 -i podcast-list.txt. The -safe 0 option permits paths that the safe-mode rules would otherwise reject, so use it only with a list you control. Quote or escape paths containing spaces or special characters according to the concat list syntax; do not assume shell quoting alone makes a path valid inside the list file.
The concat demuxer is a virtual concatenation method, not a general-purpose media normalizer. FFmpeg requires the files to have matching streams, including compatible codecs and time bases. It adjusts timestamps so the first file starts at zero and each following file starts after its predecessor; differences in stream lengths or inaccurate duration metadata can produce gaps, timestamp problems, or artifacts. Consult the concat demuxer documentation for the syntax and constraints.

Use the concat filter if files need re-encoding
If episodes do not have compatible stream layouts or need normalization, use FFmpeg’s concat filter and re-encode as needed rather than assuming the concat demuxer can reconcile them. FFmpeg’s file-concatenation FAQ explains the distinction. Validate the joined output before making it the live input; this avoids discovering a mismatch only after a restarted stream is on air.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesConfigure recovery so a new process means a new playlist run
- Make the playlist deterministic. Keep the concat list at a stable path and verify its entries are in the intended order. Check that the process account can read both the list and every media file.
- Choose one recovery owner. If the playlist should continue through a short outage, configure FIFO output recovery. If it should replay from episode one, configure the process to exit on the failure you intend to treat as a restart condition, then let a service manager or restart loop launch the command again. FIFO’s retry delay, attempt limits, queue behavior, and wait-time basis are configurable; consult the documentation for your installed build. FFmpeg FIFO muxer
- Set a bounded restart delay and record attempts. Use a delay that avoids a rapid restart loop. Log exit status and restart time so you can distinguish a transient connection failure from a bad playlist, invalid key, or persistent configuration error. These are operational recommendations, not settings required by YouTube or FFmpeg.
- Prevent overlapping publishers. Ensure the previous FFmpeg process has exited before a replacement starts. Two processes publishing with the same stream key can create confusing or conflicting event behavior; duplicate-process prevention is a practical safeguard, not a YouTube guarantee.
- Test the restart away from a live audience if possible. Confirm the new process begins with the first listed file and inspect timestamps and audio/video continuity. The exact supervisor configuration, signal handling, and exit conditions depend on your operating system and service manager.
No universal restart command or supervisor configuration can be prescribed without knowing the operating system, FFmpeg build, output protocol, and failure condition. The essential behavior is: the failed FFmpeg process exits, then a single replacement process opens the same concat list anew.

Reconnect to the correct YouTube event
- In YouTube Live Control Room, confirm the stream URL and stream key configured in FFmpeg. YouTube describes the stream key as the encoder destination credential that lets YouTube accept the feed. Keep it private. Manage live stream settings
- Check the event’s auto-start and auto-stop settings. These affect whether the encoder can start or stop the stream, so the event may not follow the same manual workflow in every configuration. For scheduled streams, YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes waiting for preview and then selecting Go live.
- After the new process connects, check Live Control Room preview and stream health. Confirm the event is receiving the feed and that the playlist has restarted at the expected entry.
Check the ingest protocol settings
RTMP or RTMPS
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. These are YouTube’s current documented RTMP/RTMPS recommendations, not proof that a reconnect or playlist restart succeeded. Match the settings to the encoder configuration and confirm health in Live Control Room. YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions
HLS
Do not apply RTMP flags as though they were HLS requirements. YouTube’s HLS ingest guidance specifies 1–4 second segments, MPEG-TS format, HTTPS POST/PUT, no byte ranges, and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. YouTube also notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP. These requirements apply to HLS ingestion specifically. Set up an HLS stream

Troubleshoot a playlist that does not restart
- The stream reconnects, but the playlist continues mid-episode. The same FFmpeg process likely recovered its output. Use process-exit recovery and relaunch FFmpeg to reopen the concat list from its beginning.
- The supervisor never starts a replacement. Check whether FIFO recovery is keeping FFmpeg alive, whether the configured failure actually causes process exit, and whether the supervisor is watching the correct service or process.
- Two feeds appear or the YouTube event behaves unpredictably. Check for a still-running FFmpeg process before restart and ensure only one process is publishing to the event. Verify the stream key and event settings in Live Control Room.
- Episodes have gaps, timestamp errors, or playback artifacts. Check stream compatibility, time bases, duration metadata, and concat-list syntax. Use the concat filter with re-encoding if the inputs need normalization.
- The encoder is connected but YouTube does not show a healthy preview. Confirm the event’s stream URL and key, protocol, and encoder settings. For RTMP/RTMPS, check YouTube’s keyframe guidance; for HLS, check the separate segment and playlist requirements.
- Restarts repeat rapidly without recovery. Inspect exit codes and logs, add a bounded delay, and fix persistent input, permission, or connection errors rather than allowing an unlimited rapid restart loop.
