How do I use a game controller on Mac with Steam?
- Check the game’s controller support. On its Steam store page, look for the controller-support label. Full Controller Support means you can download, launch, and play using only a controller. Partial Controller Support means a mouse or keyboard may still be needed for setup or some parts of the game.
- Connect a controller. Steam lists official Xbox controllers, Sony DualShock 4 and DualSense controllers, Nintendo Switch Pro controllers, and Steam Controller devices as supported by Big Picture. Follow the connection instructions for your particular controller. Compatibility can vary by model, macOS version, connection method, and game; Steam says third-party controllers may work but are not officially supported in this listing. Steam’s Big Picture support page lists the supported controller families.
- Open Big Picture Mode if you want a controller-oriented Steam interface. In the Steam client, select Enter Big Picture Mode at the upper right, or press the controller’s home button while using Steam. Big Picture is available on macOS 12 or later, according to Steam.
- Launch the game from Steam. The game’s own support level determines whether you can navigate and play entirely with the controller or will need a mouse or keyboard for some tasks.
Which controllers work with Steam on Mac?
Steam’s Big Picture documentation names official Xbox controllers, DualShock 4, DualSense, Nintendo Switch Pro controllers, and Steam Controller devices. This is a list of supported families, not a guarantee that every model will work in every game or with every Mac setup. Steam says third-party controllers often work, but are not officially supported by that list.

How to connect the 2026 Steam Controller to a Mac
Steam’s instructions for the Steam Controller (2026) say to pair it with macOS using the same process as pairing it with a PC. If your Mac does not have USB-A, Steam says to use a USB-C to USB-C cable for the Puck or controller. Accept macOS’s new-device prompt if one appears. Pairing steps are different across controller models. Steam’s Big Picture page identifies controller families but does not give complete pairing instructions for every Xbox, Sony, or Nintendo model, so use the instructions for your exact device rather than assuming one button sequence applies to all.
What to try if Steam does not detect the controller
For the 2026 Steam Controller specifically, Steam advises checking macOS permissions if the controller is paired but unresponsive:

- Go to System Settings > Privacy & Security > Input Monitoring and allow Steam.
- If the Steam Controller’s trackpad will not move the Mac’s desktop pointer, keep Steam running and enable it under System Settings > Privacy & Security > Accessibility.
These permission steps address Steam Controller behavior documented by Steam; they are not a universal fix for every gamepad. If you use another controller, check its model-specific connection instructions and the game’s support label.

Local Mac play is different from Steam Link streaming
This setup is for playing a game on the Mac running Steam. Steam Link is a separate way to stream a game from a Steam host to another screen or device, and its controller guidance is not a substitute for local Mac setup. Do not use the 2015 Steam Controller instructions for the 2026 model
Steam publishes a separate BLE support article for the discontinued Steam Controller (2015). Its instructions apply to that legacy hardware, not the Steam Controller (2026). If you have the older device, use Steam’s 2015 Steam Controller BLE page.
