The best VPN for a Chromebook is one that works on your exact model and protects the traffic you intend to cover. An Android VPN app can protect device traffic, a Chrome extension generally covers only browser activity, and ChromeOS’s built-in VPN settings require provider-supplied configuration. Check compatibility and coverage before choosing a subscription; the available evidence does not establish a universal winner from comparable Chromebook tests.
What “VPN for Chromebook” can mean
There are three common routes: configure a VPN in ChromeOS, install a provider’s Android app, or add a Chrome extension. They are not interchangeable. Google documents built-in support for IKEv2 and L2TP/IPsec, basic OpenVPN, and basic WireGuard on some Chromebooks. An Android app may offer a provider-managed connection on compatible devices. A browser extension is scoped to browser traffic rather than the whole device.

| Option | What it covers or supports | Main qualification |
|---|---|---|
| ChromeOS built-in VPN | IKEv2 and L2TP/IPsec, basic OpenVPN, and basic WireGuard on some Chromebooks | You need compatible configuration details from your VPN provider; WireGuard support is basic and limited to some devices. Google notes advanced OpenVPN configuration may require an Android app. Google Chromebook Help |
| Android VPN app | A provider app can create a VPN connection on supported Chromebooks | The Chromebook must support Android apps and have the Play Store. App behavior and settings can differ on ChromeOS. Google Chromebook Help |
| Chrome VPN extension | Browser-scoped proxy or VPN functionality | It does not provide the same device-wide coverage as a VPN app. NordVPN Support |
| Managed Android VPN | An administrator can enforce an always-on VPN app | If the enforced connection fails, user traffic is blocked; system traffic such as ChromeOS and policy updates is handled differently. Google Chrome Enterprise Help |
Check your Chromebook before choosing a provider
- Confirm Android app support. Open Chromebook Settings and look for the Google Play Store or Google Play preferences. Google says only some Chromebooks have the settings needed to install Android apps. If the Play Store is absent, a provider’s Android app may not be an option. Google’s Chromebook VPN guidance
- Check the provider’s device requirements. Support can vary by model and age. NordVPN, for example, says some older Chromebooks may not support its Android app. Its Chromebook instructions describe Android app, Chrome extension, and manual configuration options. NordVPN’s Chromebook setup guide
- Decide what traffic needs protection. If you need device-wide coverage, verify that the provider’s Android app works on your model or that its configuration details match a ChromeOS-supported protocol. If you only need browser-scoped protection, an extension may be suitable, but do not treat it as whole-device protection.
- Check restart and reconnection behavior. Ask whether the VPN reconnects after reboot and whether any always-on or kill-switch setting persists. Proton says its Android app’s always-on and kill-switch settings do not remain enabled after a Chromebook restart; users need to reconnect and re-enable them. NordVPN
NordVPN documents three Chromebook setup methods and distinguishes its Android app’s whole-device coverage from its Chrome extension’s browser-limited coverage. It also warns that some older Chromebook models may not support the Android app. Treat it as a candidate if its app or configuration method works on your model, not as a proven overall winner: the available evidence does not provide directly comparable Chromebook test results. Proton provides instructions for installing its Android app on a Chromebook. Its Chromebook-specific kill-switch guidance says the app’s always-on VPN and kill-switch settings do not stay enabled after restart, so users should reconnect and turn them back on after rebooting. That restart behavior matters if you rely on those settings to prevent unprotected connections. Proton VPN Chromebook setup · Proton VPN kill-switch behavior

How to use ChromeOS’s built-in VPN
The built-in option is useful when a provider supplies compatible connection details and you do not need a provider’s Android app. Google documents supported protocols and configuration, but availability and advanced features depend on the Chromebook and setup. Follow the provider’s current instructions for its server details and credentials, then use ChromeOS VPN settings to add the connection. Google: Set up virtual private networks (VPNs)
Do not assume that every service supports every protocol exposed by ChromeOS. In particular, Google characterizes its OpenVPN and WireGuard support as basic, with WireGuard available only on some Chromebooks; advanced OpenVPN configuration may require an Android app.

Work- or school-managed Chromebooks
An administrator may control VPN availability and configure an always-on Android VPN. Google’s managed-device guidance says an enforced VPN can block user traffic if its connection fails, until connectivity is restored. In that managed scenario, system traffic such as operating-system and policy updates is not routed through the VPN. Users may not be able to change or disconnect an administrator-enforced setup, so check with your school or workplace IT administrator before installing or configuring another VPN. - Choose an Android app if your Chromebook has Play Store support, the provider confirms compatibility, and you want app-based device coverage.
- Choose a Chrome extension only when browser-scoped coverage meets your needs; it is not a substitute for a device VPN.
- Choose ChromeOS manual configuration if your provider supplies connection details for a supported protocol and you are comfortable configuring them.
- On a managed device, let administrator policy determine what is available and whether a VPN is enforced.
