For Fire TV menus, use the included Alexa Voice Remote; a TV remote may navigate the Stick only when the TV and Stick support compatible HDMI-CEC controls, so it is not guaranteed to work on every setup. You can also configure the Fire TV remote to control TV power and volume.
Connect the Fire TV Stick and choose its input
- Put batteries in the included remote. Connect the Fire TV Stick to an HDMI port and connect its power as directed in the instructions for your model. Amazon’s standard setup guidance recommends using the power adapter plugged into a wall outlet rather than a TV USB port; supplied power arrangements can differ by model.
- Turn on the television. With the TV remote, press the button labeled Source, Input, or a similar name, then select the HDMI port used by the Stick.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to connect to Wi-Fi and sign in to your Amazon account. Complete any equipment-control setup offered during installation.
Amazon’s Fire TV Stick setup instructions use the TV remote for choosing the source or input and describe the Alexa Voice Remote as the control for browsing Fire TV. Remote appearance and features vary by model.

What the TV remote can control
Selecting the HDMI input
This is the basic, dependable use of the TV remote in the setup process: switch the television to the HDMI port connected to the Stick. If the TV displays “No signal,” verify that you selected the matching port.

Navigating Fire TV menus
Do not assume that a TV remote will control Fire TV menus. HDMI-CEC can let connected devices send control commands, but support and available functions vary by television and Fire TV model. Keep the included Alexa Voice Remote available and check both devices’ documentation for supported controls.

Controlling TV power and volume
Fire TV Stick remotes with TV-control buttons can be configured to control a television’s power, volume, and mute. This is separate from using the TV remote to choose an input. To set it up, go to Settings > Equipment Control > Manage Equipment > TV, check that the listed brand matches your television, and follow the prompts. If it does not work, choose the option to change the TV and complete the setup again.
Enable HDMI-CEC on the TV
CEC is a device-control feature carried over HDMI. TV makers often use their own names for it, and the menu location varies by model and software. Amazon lists these examples:

These are examples, not universal menu paths. Find the setting in your TV’s manual or the manufacturer’s official support page if the label or steps differ. Amazon also notes that some features may require HDMI ARC as well as CEC. ARC returns audio between the TV and a soundbar or receiver; it is distinct from CEC’s device-control signaling.
For Fire TV app power or volume controls that depend on CEC, Amazon warns: “Not all TVs support the CEC protocol required to use this feature.” Enabling CEC cannot add support when a TV lacks the required protocol.

Troubleshoot a remote or display problem
The TV says “No signal” or the screen is blank
- Use the TV remote’s Source or Input control to select the HDMI port connected to the Stick.
- If the Stick is connected through an A/V receiver or soundbar, check that device’s selected input. To isolate the cause, connect the Stick directly to the TV if possible.
- Reseat the Stick in its HDMI port and restart it.
- Toggle HDMI-CEC Device Control at Settings > Display & Sounds > HDMI-CEC Device Control.
- For 4K Ultra HD streaming, Amazon recommends a High-Speed HDMI cable. Amazon notes that a brief black flicker can occur when starting or stopping 4K Ultra HD streaming.
The TV remote changes inputs but will not control Fire TV menus
Input selection and menu navigation are different functions. Use the included Alexa Voice Remote for browsing unless your specific TV and Stick documentation confirms compatible CEC navigation. The cited Amazon guidance does not guarantee that a TV remote can navigate every Fire TV Stick.
The Fire TV remote works in menus but not for TV power or volume
Open Settings > Equipment Control > Manage Equipment > TV, verify the TV brand, and run the change-TV setup if needed. For an external speaker, configure it under Equipment Control as directed by the on-screen prompts. Enable CEC on the TV for CEC-dependent functions; some televisions lack the protocol those controls require.

You cannot find the CEC setting
Search the TV manual or official manufacturer support using the brand’s CEC name from the table. Paths vary by model and software, so a label or menu shown for another TV may not match yours.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhen a replacement remote or HDMI extender makes sense
If the included Alexa Voice Remote is missing or faulty, first check the TV brand and Equipment Control setup; replacing it is not necessary just to select the HDMI input or enable CEC. An HDMI extender can help when a port is hard to reach or crowded by nearby cables, but it will not resolve remote or CEC compatibility issues. Amazon describes the extender’s purpose as improving access and cable clearance; try one you already have before buying anything.
