Set the humidistat to a reasonable relative-humidity target, close the doors and windows to the space, and let the unit cycle automatically. Keep its airflow clear and reduce moisture entering the room. These steps help avoid needless runtime; in a cool basement, check the model’s temperature rating because frost can interrupt moisture removal.
Set a sensible humidity target
ENERGY STAR’s general guidance puts optimum indoor relative humidity at 30%–50%. In colder climates during the heating season, it suggests 30%–40% to help limit window condensation. Use the built-in humidistat and allow it to turn the unit on and off as the room reaches and moves away from the setpoint. Avoid choosing the lowest possible setting by default: a needlessly low target can keep the machine running longer without a practical benefit.

If your unit lacks a usable humidistat or does not display relative humidity, a separate hygrometer can help you monitor the room. ENERGY STAR suggests placing the gauge near the dehumidifier so you can decide when to switch the unit on or off.

Keep the unit focused on the space
Close doors and windows
Close doors and windows to the room or area being treated while the dehumidifier runs. As ENERGY STAR puts it, “Doors and windows to the space being dehumidified should be closed while the unit is running.” Otherwise, humid air can keep entering and add to the load the machine must remove.
Leave airflow clear
Keep the intake and discharge unobstructed. Required clearance depends on the discharge design: some top-discharge models can sit closer to walls than models that need open space around them. Follow the owner’s manual for placement and clearance, and avoid dusty spots where dirt can clog coils and grills.

- Clear gutters, extend downspouts and grade soil away from the foundation; avoid over-watering plantings beside it.
- Vent clothes dryers outdoors, use kitchen and bathroom exhaust fans, and dry laundry outdoors when practical.
- Repair leaks, including leaking outdoor faucets.
- If the home has central air conditioning, use its dehumidifying capability and improve airflow between humid and drier areas where appropriate.
Use drainage safely and maintain the model as directed
If the unit supports continuous drainage, a compatible hose to a nearby floor drain or sump can avoid repeated bucket emptying. Check the manufacturer’s instructions before using a hose or built-in pump. Keep drainage away from electrical circuits and devices, use a properly grounded outlet, and route the hose so it does not create a tripping hazard.
Dust and dirt can clog coils and grills, but cleaning intervals and methods vary by model. Use the manual’s instructions for filter and coil care rather than assuming a universal schedule or cleaner.
Take extra care in a cool basement
ENERGY STAR warns that frost can form on condensing coils when air temperature falls below 65°F. Frost can reduce performance and cause repeated compressor cycling without moisture removal. If this happens, switch the unit off and allow it to defrost before restarting.

For a space that is often below 65°F, check whether the specific model is rated to operate at lower temperatures. Do not assume every portable dehumidifier will work efficiently in a cold basement; consult its manual or specifications.

Capacity and efficiency describe different things. Capacity is the amount of water a dehumidifier removes in 24 hours under specified test conditions; it is not an electricity-use figure on its own. Integrated Energy Factor (IEF), expressed in liters removed per kilowatt-hour, indicates how much moisture the unit removes for the energy it consumes. A higher IEF means greater efficiency. ENERGY STAR explains these measures in its testing and capacity overview.
ENERGY STAR Version 6.0 criteria took effect October 1, 2025. Its minimum IEF for portable units varies by capacity band:

These are certification thresholds, not a prediction of your electricity bill. Check the current label and ENERGY STAR criteria; a larger capacity alone does not establish that a model is more efficient.
ENERGY STAR says the needed capacity depends on room size and moisture conditions. If you are replacing a unit, how much water you typically emptied each day can provide one useful clue. Also compare the replacement’s IEF, suitability for the room’s temperature, and drainage and placement options.

The U.S. Department of Energy says ENERGY STAR-qualified dehumidifiers use about 15% less energy than a conventional unit. That is a stated comparison, not a guarantee of individual household savings. ENERGY STAR’s consumer page separately describes certified dehumidifiers as 20% more efficient than non-certified models; the two figures use different page contexts and should not be treated as the same comparison. DOE also describes a proposal to rescind amended standards for most dehumidifiers, published May 16, 2025. A proposal is not a change to the current standard; consult the DOE consumer page for its rulemaking information.
