To use a controller with a browser game, first confirm that the specific game supports gamepads. Then connect a compatible controller to your computer by USB or Bluetooth, open the game in a current browser, make the game page visible and active, and press a controller button if input is not detected right away. A browser can provide access to controller input through the Gamepad API, but that does not make every game controller-compatible: the game itself must also implement gamepad controls.
Check whether the game supports a controller
Start with the game, not the controller. A controller can be connected successfully and visible to a browser while a particular game still ignores it. The game must be designed to read gamepad input and map it to actions such as moving, jumping, aiming, or navigating menus.

Look in the game’s instructions, settings, controls menu, or listing for terms such as “controller,” “gamepad,” or “gamepad support.” If those details are not shown, the game’s own help or support information is the best place to check. Do not infer controller support just because a game runs in a browser or because your browser supports the Gamepad API.

Check the exact game you intend to play, rather than relying on the general description of a site or service. Support can be a property of an individual game. If its listing names keyboard, mouse, or touch controls but says nothing about a gamepad, look for more specific instructions rather than assuming a connected controller will work. This check can save time: a successful connection to the computer cannot add controls the game was not built to accept.

Xbox Cloud Gaming has a service-specific indicator
For Xbox Cloud Gaming, Microsoft says a small controller icon on a game’s product page indicates that the game is controller-ready. That indicator applies to Xbox Cloud Gaming product pages; it is not a general signal for games on other websites or game portals. Microsoft also notes that controller compatibility and availability can vary by region, so check the service’s current compatibility information for your location.
Microsoft Edge’s guide, published April 11, 2023, puts it this way: “If you see a small controller icon on the page, it’s controller-ready!” The surrounding context is Xbox Cloud Gaming product pages. Use that icon as a check for the listed game on that service, not as proof that all browser games or all controllers are supported.
Check compatibility before buying hardware
Compatibility involves more than whether a controller can connect to a computer. Check the particular game’s control options and the chosen controller’s compatibility with the browser, operating system, and game service. Microsoft cautions that not all controllers work with browser games. If you already own a controller, try it before buying another one; if you are shopping, confirm the game and platform requirements first.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAn Xbox controller is one possible option because Microsoft’s guide describes connecting one to browser games by USB or Bluetooth. It is not a universal recommendation: the guide does not establish that every Xbox controller, computer, browser, or game will work in every combination. If choosing a wired setup, select a cable only after checking the controller’s connector and the computer’s port. A cable mentioned for one model may not suit another.
Choose a wired or Bluetooth connection
The two connection approaches covered here are USB and Bluetooth. Which one is available depends on the controller and computer. A wired setup requires a cable that fits the controller and a usable port on the computer. Bluetooth avoids a cable during play, but both the controller and computer must support Bluetooth and the controller needs enough charge.
| Connection | What you need | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| USB | A compatible cable and a suitable computer port | Match the cable to the controller’s connector and the computer’s port. Connector types vary by controller model; a micro-USB example in Microsoft’s Xbox instructions is not universal. |
| Bluetooth | A Bluetooth-capable controller and computer | Confirm that the controller is paired in the computer’s Bluetooth settings and has sufficient charge for wireless use. |
The cited Microsoft instructions describe USB and Bluetooth setup for an Xbox controller, including a micro-USB cable in its wired example. Do not assume that another controller uses the same cable or pairing procedure. The sources do not establish a general advantage for either connection in latency, reliability, or battery life, so choose based on your equipment and preference rather than an assumed performance difference.
A quick decision is whether you already have the right equipment: USB needs a cable that matches both ends, while Bluetooth needs a controller and computer that support Bluetooth and a charged controller. If either connection option is unclear, check the instructions for the exact controller and computer. There is no single cable or pairing procedure that can be specified for every model.

Connect the controller and start the game
Option 1: Connect by USB
- Check the connector on the controller and the available port on the computer.
- Use a cable that fits both. If the controller does not connect, verify that the cable and port are appropriate for that model rather than assuming all controllers use the same USB connector.
- Connect the controller to the computer and check that the computer recognizes it.
- Open the browser game and consult its instructions or input settings if it has them.
For Microsoft’s Xbox example, the wired setup uses a micro-USB cable. Treat that as a model-specific example, not a standard for all controllers. If your controller has a different connector, use its matching cable and follow its maker’s setup directions. The important check for this step is whether the controller is connected to the computer; that is separate from whether the browser game will use it.
Option 2: Pair by Bluetooth
Pairing menus and button names can differ across devices. For Microsoft’s Xbox-controller example on a Windows computer, the procedure is:
- Press the Xbox button on the controller.
- Hold the Pair button for three seconds, until the Xbox button flashes.
- Open the computer’s Bluetooth settings, choose Add device, and select the controller.
- After pairing, open the game page and check the game’s own controller instructions or input settings.
Those button and menu directions are specific to Microsoft’s Xbox-controller and Windows example. For another model or operating system, follow its own pairing instructions rather than treating the Xbox steps as universal.
If the controller does not appear in the computer’s Bluetooth settings, the issue is at the connection or pairing stage, before the game can receive input. Check that Bluetooth is available on the computer and use the pairing instructions for your exact controller. Microsoft’s example uses a flashing Xbox button to indicate its pairing step; do not expect another model to use the same button or indicator.

Make the game page active
- Open the game in a current browser that supports the game.
- Make sure the game page is visible and active. If the game has a start screen, click or tap where its instructions indicate before playing.
- Press a controller button if the game does not recognize the controller immediately.
- Use the game’s settings or control menu, if available, to check its input options.
Page focus and interaction matter in some browser and operating-system combinations. MDN’s Gamepad API guidance specifically notes that in Firefox, a page receives gamepad visibility after the user interacts with a controller while that page is visible. Pressing a button with the game page active is therefore a useful first check, not a guarantee or a complete diagnosis for every browser.
This is why it helps to test with the game page in front of you rather than leaving it in the background and assuming it has already noticed the controller. If a button press does not help, return to the earlier checks: confirm the game supports a controller, then confirm the computer has connected to the controller. The Firefox behavior is a documented example, not a universal rule about every browser.
What browser support does—and does not—mean
The Gamepad API is a browser interface that lets a web page detect gamepads and read their state. A game can use it to respond to connection or disconnection events and to inspect controller information, button states, and analog axes. The API makes controller input available to web developers; it does not add gamepad controls to a game that was built only for keyboard, mouse, or touch.

MDN describes the Gamepad API as widely available across browsers since March 2017, while also noting that support varies for some parts of the API. This is an API-level availability statement, not a measure of the percentage of browser games that support controllers and not a promise that a specific controller, game, or setup will work. Can I Use provides browser- and version-specific Gamepad API information, but that information still cannot establish whether an individual game has implemented controller input.
For most players, there is no need to inspect JavaScript or use developer tools. The practical test is whether the game documents controller support, whether the computer connects to the controller, and whether the game responds to input. The API details matter mainly when a developer or a diagnostic tool needs to distinguish a connection problem from a game’s input-support problem.
For a web developer or someone using a gamepad tester, the API offers more specific clues than a simple “connected” message. Pages can listen for gamepadconnected and gamepaddisconnected events, and navigator.getGamepads() can return the gamepads visible to the page. A Gamepad object can include an ID, a mapping value, button states, analog-axis values, and connection status. These are ways for a page to inspect controller state; they do not mean that a game has assigned every button or axis to an in-game action.
The mapping value can indicate whether the browser recognizes a standard layout. If a game responds differently from what you expect, that value alone does not settle whether the game, controller, or setup is at fault. The controller, browser, operating system, and game all factor into how input is exposed and interpreted. For an ordinary player, the game’s input menu and support information are more useful than raw API properties. Technical inspection is most useful when diagnosing a web game or building one.
Troubleshoot a controller the game does not recognize
Work through these checks in order. They separate the most common categories of failure: unsupported game, inactive page, and controller connection. A browser-level connection alone does not prove that the game supports the controller.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Think of the setup as three separate links: the computer connects to the controller; the browser makes controller input available to the page; and the game reads that input and maps it to controls. Check the earliest link that is failing. If the computer never pairs with the device, game settings are not the first issue. If the computer has connected and the page still does nothing, verify game support before buying a replacement controller.
The game ignores every button
- Check the game’s own instructions or settings for controller support. If it accepts only keyboard, mouse, or touch input, connecting a gamepad will not add controller controls.
- If the game does support controllers, make the game page visible and active and press a button again.
- Check whether the game has a controls or input menu that needs a selection or configuration.
If the game offers no controller information, consult its own help or support details. Avoid treating general browser compatibility as confirmation: the browser API is a way for a page to read input, while the individual game must implement the controls. If the game is explicitly keyboard-only, repeated pairing attempts will not change that limitation.

The controller appears connected but the page does not react
- Confirm that the game page is the active visible page, then press a controller button. MDN specifically documents this interaction condition for Firefox; other browsers and platforms may behave differently.
- Verify that the game itself supports gamepads. The browser may expose controller input without the game using it.
- If the game offers an input menu or its own troubleshooting steps, use those before changing unrelated browser settings.
These checks separate page visibility from game support. A controller can be connected to the computer without the game page having detected an interaction, and the page can receive gamepad data without the game assigning useful actions to that data. For Firefox, make the page visible and interact with the controller; for other browser and platform combinations, follow the game’s own directions and do not assume that the same visibility behavior applies.
The computer does not connect to the controller
- For USB, check that the cable fits both the controller and computer. Connector types vary, and a cable used in one controller example may not fit another model.
- For Bluetooth, check the computer’s Bluetooth connection state and the controller’s pairing instructions. For the Windows Xbox example, the Xbox button flashes after holding Pair for three seconds; the computer’s Bluetooth settings then offer Add device.
- If the controller is wireless, check that it has charge. The sources establish Bluetooth as a connection option but do not specify a universal battery indicator or charging procedure; use the controller maker’s instructions for those details.
Keep the connector and pairing questions specific to your equipment. Microsoft’s micro-USB cable example and Xbox pairing sequence are useful when they match your controller and computer, but they are not universal. If you have a different model or operating system, look up its connection instructions rather than buying a cable based on another controller’s port.
Buttons or sticks behave unexpectedly
The Gamepad API can expose whether a browser recognizes a standard mapping, along with button states and analog axes. Recognition of a standard layout is not a guarantee that every game will interpret every input as expected: behavior depends on the controller, browser, operating system, and game. Check the game’s control settings and any controller-specific guidance before concluding that the controller is defective.
If a game has an input or controls menu, use it to see what actions the game expects and whether it offers configuration. Browser-level information such as button states or axes can help a developer investigate what the page receives, but it does not tell an ordinary player that a specific action is supported in the game. Keep the diagnosis focused on the game’s documented controls and the exact controller and platform combination.
A cloud game rejects the setup
Check the cloud service’s current browser, game, and controller compatibility information. For Xbox Cloud Gaming, Microsoft’s compatibility information and game-page controller icon are specific to that service, and availability may vary by region. Do not apply its icon or compatibility list to unrelated game portals.
Check the individual game’s product page, not just a general page for the cloud service. A service-level statement does not establish support for every listed title, and a controller icon on an Xbox Cloud Gaming product page is not an indicator for games hosted elsewhere. Compatibility details can change, so use the service’s current information for the game and region you are trying to use.

- Does the computer have a connection to the controller? This is a USB or Bluetooth setup question.
- Can the browser expose the controller input to a page? This depends on browser and platform support for the Gamepad API and the page’s access to the gamepad.
- Does this game use controller input? This is determined by the game’s implementation and its own supported controls.
A “yes” at one stage does not establish a “yes” at the next. For example, the controller may pair successfully and the browser may support the API, but a game that has no gamepad controls can still ignore it. Keeping these checks separate makes troubleshooting more direct and prevents an unnecessary hardware purchase when the game itself is the limitation.
The useful compatibility question is not simply “Does this browser support gamepads?” It is whether this controller can connect to this computer, whether the browser and page can expose its input, and whether this particular game uses that input. A compatibility table for the browser can help answer a browser-version question, but it cannot certify a controller/game combination or substitute for the game’s own supported-controls information.
Microsoft’s guide to browser-based games, published April 11, 2023, describes controller support and USB or Bluetooth setup in the context of Xbox controllers and Xbox Cloud Gaming. It is focused on the US market and notes regional variation. MDN’s API documentation explains browser-level gamepad access; Can I Use presents browser and version tables. None of these sources establishes compatibility for every game, controller, browser, operating system, or region, and no hands-on testing of a particular controller and game is claimed here.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use any controller with a browser game?
No. The controller must be compatible with the computer, browser, operating system, and game or cloud service, and the game itself must support gamepad input. Check the specific game’s control information and the device or service compatibility details before buying hardware.
Why does my browser support the Gamepad API but the game ignores my controller?
The Gamepad API lets a web page detect a controller and read input, but each game must implement controller controls. API support alone does not make a keyboard-, mouse-, or touch-only game controller-compatible.
How do I pair an Xbox controller with a Windows computer for a browser game?
In Microsoft’s example, press the Xbox button, hold Pair for three seconds until the Xbox button flashes, then open the computer’s Bluetooth settings, choose Add device, and select the controller. These steps are specific to the Xbox-controller and Windows example; other models and systems may differ.
Should I use USB or Bluetooth?
Use whichever connection your controller and computer support. USB requires a cable that fits both devices; Bluetooth requires Bluetooth support and a charged controller. The available guidance does not establish a general advantage in latency, reliability, or battery life.
What should I do if the browser game does not detect my controller?
First confirm that the game supports controllers. Then check that the computer has connected to the controller, make the game page visible and active, and press a controller button. In Firefox, MDN notes that a page receives gamepad visibility after a controller interaction while the page is visible; behavior can differ elsewhere.
Does the controller icon mean every browser game supports controllers?
No. Microsoft’s small controller icon refers to controller-ready game pages on Xbox Cloud Gaming. It is not a general indicator for games on other sites or portals.
The Bottom Line
Check controller support for the exact game first. Connect a compatible controller by USB or Bluetooth, open and focus the game page, then press a button if it is not detected. Browser support for the Gamepad API makes input available to web pages, but only the game can implement controller controls.
