If a UPI payment says Failed but your bank account was debited, do not pay again immediately. Open the transaction in your UPI app, record the transaction reference or RRN, amount, date, recipient or merchant and status, then request help from the bank linked to the debited account if the money is not reversed. NPCI says a failed debit should be refunded and advises contacting your bank when the refund has not arrived within one hour. The final RBI deadline depends on what you were paying: a funds transfer has an outer reversal limit of T+1, while a merchant payment without confirmation has an outer limit of T+5.
First, identify what actually happened
The word shown in the app is only the starting point. A UPI transaction can be failed, pending, successful, reversed or apparently successful while the recipient or merchant has not yet confirmed it. The recovery route and deadline depend on both the status and the transaction type.

Failed
A failed or declined transaction did not complete normally. If your account was debited, the amount should be sent back through an automatic reversal. NPCI explains that technical declines can result from a bank, NPCI or network problem; business declines can result from an invalid UPI PIN, incorrect beneficiary details or a limit being exceeded. A failure message does not by itself prove that the beneficiary or merchant received the money.
Pending
Pending means the final result has not been confirmed. The debit may be visible while the beneficiary bank, merchant or payment system is still processing the request. Treating a pending payment as a definite failure and immediately repeating it can create a second debit.

Successful, but the recipient says nothing arrived
Do not rely only on a chat message or a screenshot from the other person. Compare the transaction reference, beneficiary account details and the recipient’s bank statement. If your app reports success but the beneficiary is not credited, report that specific transaction to your bank rather than creating another payment.
Reversed or refunded
A reversal means the debit has been returned. Confirm the amount in the bank account or statement, not just a notification. Keep the record until the credit is visible and the recipient or merchant no longer expects payment.
What to do immediately, in order
- Open the transaction history. In your UPI app, go to the transaction list, select the disputed payment and read the current status. Labels vary between apps, so capture the full detail page rather than relying on a notification.
- Preserve the identifiers. Write down the transaction reference number or RRN, date and time, amount, UPI ID or account details, merchant name if applicable, and the exact error or status. Take screenshots that show the debit and the transaction detail.
- Check the bank account. Look at the linked bank’s mobile app, SMS alert or statement to establish whether the debit is still present, has been reversed, or has been posted under a different description. Do not share your UPI PIN, one-time password or full card credentials with support.
- Use the in-app issue option. Open the transaction and choose a label such as Help, Report issue, Raise complaint or Payment failed. BHIM’s transaction view, for example, provides a “report issue” route for declined transactions. Submit the RRN and screenshots when the form allows them.
- Contact the bank linked to the debited account. Use the bank’s official app, website, branch or telephone number. Tell the agent that the account was debited and state whether this was a person-to-person transfer or a merchant payment. Ask for a complaint number and keep it.
- Wait according to the correct RBI limit. NPCI’s one-hour advice is an early support trigger; the regulatory outer limit is determined by the transaction category explained below. If the limit passes, contact the bank again with the existing complaint number.
Before contacting support, rule out a duplicate
Review the transaction list for two entries with the same amount or a similar time. A notification can arrive late, and tapping “pay” again may create a second transaction while the first is still pending. If two debits exist, list both RRNs separately and tell support which payment was intended. Do not ask the recipient to return money to a different UPI ID until the bank has confirmed which entry settled.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUse official contact details only
Find the bank’s number in its official app, website or account statement. Search-result advertisements, unsolicited calls and social-media messages can impersonate bank staff. A real support agent does not need your UPI PIN or an OTP to post a refund. Never install remote-access software at a caller’s request.
The two RBI deadlines you must not confuse
RBI uses T for the calendar date on which the transaction occurred. The limits below are outer limits for auto-reversal in the stated circumstances; they should not be casually described as business days. For example, if a transaction occurred on the 10th, T+1 refers to the next calendar day and T+5 to the fifth calendar day after it.
| Transaction situation | Auto-reversal outer limit | Delay compensation |
|---|---|---|
| You were debited for a UPI funds transfer, but the beneficiary was not credited because the beneficiary bank could not credit the account. | By T+1 | ₹100 per day after T+1, under the RBI framework |
| You were debited for a UPI merchant payment, but the merchant did not receive transaction confirmation. | Within T+5 | ₹100 per day after T+5, under the RBI framework |
The ₹100-per-day amount applies to delay beyond the relevant limit under the RBI framework and is not a blanket payment for every disputed transaction. RBI states that compensation covered by the framework is to be credited suo motu, without waiting for a separate claim. Ask the bank to explain the applicable category if it classifies your payment differently. The framework cited for these limits dates from 2019, so confirm the bank’s current implementation if a later rule or product-specific process is mentioned.
If the payment was marked failed
Use NPCI’s one-hour instruction as the first checkpoint
NPCI’s UPI FAQ says: “In case of failures money will be refunded back to your account. Sometimes this takes longer than intended. If you do not receive the refund within 1 hour, please contact customer support at your bank.” This is service guidance, not a promise that every reversal will appear in exactly 60 minutes. Start the bank complaint after that point if the debit remains.

Do not make a duplicate payment before checking
Ask the recipient or merchant to wait while you confirm the first transaction’s status. If you must pay urgently, use a different method only after recording the original RRN and understanding that the original debit could still be reversed later. Keep proof of both payments so the bank can distinguish them. If the first payment later succeeds, settle only the amount that remains genuinely due and ask the merchant or recipient to document any separate refund.
What to tell support
Give the bank a precise statement: “My UPI transaction on [date] for ₹[amount] shows failed, but my account is debited. The RRN is [number]. Please confirm the reversal status and register a complaint.” Use the actual date and amount in the message; do not send your PIN or an OTP.
Ask for the ledger result, not just a new notification
Support may say that a reversal has been initiated. Ask whether the debit entry is reversed in the bank ledger, the reversal reference, and the expected posting date. A push notification can lag behind the ledger, while an app may retain a failed label after the account has been credited. Keep both the original payment reference and any reversal reference.
If the payment is still pending
A pending status calls for verification, not an immediate second payment. Refresh the transaction details in the app, check the linked bank statement, and ask the beneficiary or merchant whether any credit or order confirmation was received.

That FAQ is general guidance rather than a live record of your transaction, and the page’s publication date is not stated. Use the app and bank for the current status, and use the RBI T+1 or T+5 outer limit that matches your transaction type when deciding whether a reversal is overdue.
When to escalate a pending payment
- Raise an issue from the transaction page while it remains pending.
- Provide the RRN, the debit evidence and the beneficiary or merchant details.
- Ask the bank whether it is waiting for a response from the beneficiary bank or merchant-acquiring side.
- Do not close the complaint merely because the app continues to display “pending”; obtain a complaint number and a stated next action.
- Set a reminder for the relevant T+1 or T+5 date instead of relying on memory, especially when the payment occurred near midnight.
How to file and track a complaint
Start with the UPI app or your bank
NPCI says customers can raise a grievance or check status through the participating bank’s UPI app. The labels differ, but the path is usually Transaction history → select transaction → Help/Report issue → choose the failure or debit-not-received reason → submit. Save the on-screen ticket or service-request number.
Give the member institution enough information
The bank needs to match your complaint to the payment record. Include:

- Your UPI ID and the bank account that was debited
- Beneficiary UPI ID or account details, or the merchant name and order reference
- Screenshot showing status and debit
- Any prior complaint number
Describe the missing outcome accurately: “beneficiary not credited” for a funds transfer or “merchant did not receive confirmation” for a purchase. This helps the bank apply the correct T+1 or T+5 category instead of treating every debit as the same type of case.
Never provide a UPI PIN, OTP, password or remote-control access to a person claiming to process a refund. A legitimate refund does not require you to approve a collect request or enter your PIN to receive money.
Use NPCI’s complaint portal when the app route is insufficient
NPCI’s complaint portal accepts transaction details, supports status checks and makes the complaint available to the relevant member institution. The member bank or institution—not NPCI itself—is responsible for resolving and reversing the transaction. Record the portal acknowledgement and continue dealing with the bank handling the debited account. If the portal asks you to select a member, use the bank or UPI participant shown in the transaction details rather than guessing.
Why the balance and app status can disagree
Technical decline
A bank, NPCI or network system may be unavailable or may fail to send a final response. The debit can appear before the reversal message reaches the app. NPCI’s glossary notes that a delayed reversal may be processed manually by banks under RBI guidelines when an instant confirmation is not possible.
Business decline
An invalid PIN, incorrect beneficiary information or a limit breach can cause a business decline. Correcting the underlying detail may be necessary before trying again, but first establish whether the original debit has been reversed. Re-entering a wrong UPI ID or repeatedly guessing a PIN can create additional declines or security restrictions.

Settlement timing
The beneficiary bank or merchant side may receive the request but not yet post the credit or confirmation. This is why the funds-transfer and merchant-payment deadlines are different: they measure different missing outcomes.
Notification delay
SMS, push notifications and app screens can update at different times. The bank’s ledger and transaction reference are stronger evidence than a delayed notification. Ask support to confirm the ledger status and reversal reference.

Merchant payments need a different check
For a shop, website or biller, the key question is whether the merchant received confirmation, not merely whether your account was debited. Ask the merchant to search by the UPI transaction reference and order number. If there is no confirmation, keep the order marked unpaid until the bank confirms the outcome; do not assume the merchant can reverse a bank debit directly.
Under the RBI framework, a merchant debit without confirmation has an auto-reversal limit of T+5. If the amount remains unreversed after that limit, cite the RRN and the merchant-payment category in your bank complaint and ask about the applicable ₹100-per-day delay compensation. Keep the merchant’s “payment not received” message or order status, but do not let a merchant persuade you to share banking credentials.

A payment you did not initiate is not an ordinary failed-transaction delay. Contact the bank immediately through its official fraud or unauthorised-transaction channel, block or secure affected access as the bank directs, and preserve the transaction details. NPCI specifically directs complaints about fraudulent, unidentified or unauthorised transactions to the user’s bank.
Do not wait for the one-hour failed-payment checkpoint when you suspect fraud. Tell the bank that you did not authorise the transaction, provide the time and RRN, and ask what immediate account protections and written acknowledgement are required. A complaint about an unknown debit should not be described as a routine technical failure.
What to do when the deadline has passed
- Check that you have applied the correct category: T+1 for the stated funds-transfer failure or T+5 for the stated merchant-confirmation failure.
- Reply to the existing bank complaint with the RRN, debit date, expiry of the applicable limit and a request for reversal status and compensation review.
- Ask for a written explanation if the bank says the transaction was successful, including the beneficiary-credit or merchant-confirmation evidence.
- Submit or update the complaint through NPCI’s portal if the in-app route has not produced a resolution, and quote the bank’s complaint number.
- Follow the bank’s current grievance policy for further escalation. General guidance cannot establish eligibility or waiting periods for every case, so confirm the bank’s current process and any applicable RBI complaint channel.
If the bank claims that the beneficiary was credited, request the date, amount and destination account or the merchant confirmation record that supports that conclusion. If it says the amount was reversed, request the reversal reference and posting date. Those details let you compare the bank’s explanation with your own statement instead of arguing from a notification alone.
Keep a complete record
Store screenshots, SMS alerts, bank-statement entries, the RRN, support chats, call dates, agent names or IDs, complaint numbers and promised response dates in one folder. If the amount is later reversed, retain the record until the beneficiary or merchant confirms that no balance remains due. A clear timeline prevents a second payment from being mistaken for the original transaction and makes escalation faster.
A practical decision checklist
- Failed + debited: wait for the reversal, contact the bank after NPCI’s one-hour checkpoint, and apply T+1 or T+5 according to transaction type.
- Pending + debited: do not duplicate the payment; check status, report it in the app and monitor the applicable RBI limit.
- Successful + beneficiary missing: verify the RRN and beneficiary account, then ask the bank to trace the credit.
- Merchant has no confirmation: ask the merchant to search by RRN and use the T+5 merchant-payment rule if confirmation never arrives.
- Unknown debit: report it as unauthorised to the bank immediately, not as an ordinary failed payment.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long should I wait after a failed UPI debit?
NPCI advises contacting the bank if a failed debit has not been refunded within one hour. The RBI outer limit then depends on the case: T+1 for the stated funds-transfer situation and T+5 for a merchant payment without confirmation.
Best Value
What is the difference between T+1 and T+5?
T is the calendar date of the transaction. T+1 applies when you were debited but a beneficiary was not credited in a UPI funds transfer. T+5 applies when you were debited for a merchant payment but the merchant did not receive confirmation.
Can I pay again while a UPI payment is pending?
Avoid a duplicate payment until you have checked the transaction status and bank ledger. A pending request can later complete or reverse. If another payment is unavoidable, preserve both RRNs and explain the duplicate risk to the bank.
Will NPCI refund my money directly?
No. NPCI’s complaint portal routes the case to the relevant member institution. The bank or participating institution handling the transaction is responsible for investigating and resolving the debit.
What details does the bank need?
Provide the RRN or transaction reference, date and time, amount, UPI and beneficiary or merchant details, screenshots showing the status and debit, and any existing complaint number. Never provide your UPI PIN or OTP.
Does the ₹100-per-day compensation apply to every failed payment?
No. It applies to delay beyond the relevant RBI limit under the stated framework and transaction circumstances. Ask the bank to classify the payment and review compensation; it is not a blanket award for every dispute.
What if I do not recognise the debit?
Treat it as an unauthorised or fraudulent transaction and contact the bank immediately through its official channel. Do not wait for the one-hour failed-payment checkpoint.
The app says successful but the recipient has not received the money. What should I do?
Check the recipient’s bank statement and the transaction reference, then ask your bank to trace the beneficiary credit. Do not create another payment until the first transaction’s outcome is established.
The Bottom Line
Save the RRN, verify the exact status and check the linked bank ledger. For a failed debit, contact the bank if the refund is missing after NPCI’s one-hour checkpoint. Apply the correct RBI outer limit—T+1 for the specified UPI funds-transfer case or T+5 for a merchant payment without confirmation—and report any unauthorised debit immediately.
