How to Use a Controller with a Classic PC Game

A classic PC game may support a joystick directly, or it may need controller inputs mapped to its keyboard controls. Here’s how to choose the right DOSBox or Steam setup.

Yes—you can often use a controller with a classic PC game, but the right setup depends on what the game accepts. If it supports a joystick, configure DOSBox to present the controller as one and calibrate it. If the game accepts only keyboard input, map the controller’s buttons and directions to the keys the game already uses.

First, find out what input the game supports

Check the game’s manual, in-game options, or setup program for joystick or gamepad settings. If it offers joystick controls, enable them and use its calibration routine. If it offers only keyboard controls, keep those controls enabled and use a mapper to translate controller input into keyboard presses.

These are different input paths: DOSBox’s joystick settings help a game that expects a joystick; they do not automatically make a keyboard-only game understand one. GOG’s Mortal Kombat 2 support guide illustrates the keyboard-mapping approach for a DOSBox game that does not accept a joystick directly.

Route 1: Use the game’s native joystick support

Connect and configure the controller

A wired USB gamepad is a sensible device to try. DOSBox Staging 0.83 says it automatically detects modern USB controllers and maps them to its emulated analog joystick, but this is not a guarantee that every classic game or DOSBox version will support a particular controller or all of its inputs. See the DOSBox Staging 0.83 joystick documentation.

In DOSBox v0.74-3, the [joystick] section’s joysticktype setting controls how a joystick is presented to the DOS game. The manual lists none, auto, 2axis, 4axis, and variants for a second controller. In that version, auto is the default and selects an emulated mode based on whether one or two controllers are detected. The mode available in DOSBox does not mean the game supports every axis or button. Consult the DOSBox v0.74-3 manual for the configuration details applicable to that version.

Calibrate in both places

Calibrate the controller in your operating system, then run the game’s own calibration routine or its setup program if one is available. Calibration can help correct off-center or incorrectly ranged input; it cannot add joystick support to a game that only reads the keyboard.

When to try a timing option

If a game has joystick problems after configuration and calibration, the DOSBox v0.74-3 manual suggests trying timed=false. Treat it as a troubleshooting option for some games, not a setting that should be changed for every setup.

Route 2: Map controller input to keyboard controls

Use this route when the game is keyboard-only or its joystick support is unusable. Leave the game’s controls set to the keys you want, then bind controller directions and buttons to those same keys in DOSBox’s mapper. For example, bind the gamepad’s directional inputs to the arrow keys if that is how the game moves its character.

Open the DOSBox mapper

The DOSBox Wiki documents opening the mapper with Ctrl+F1 or launching DOSBox with -startmapper. The mapper displays a virtual keyboard and joystick; a controller event can be bound to a keyboard event. Follow the DOSBoxWiki mapper guide for the mapper available in your DOSBox build.

DOSBox Staging also documents a key mapper for assigning gamepad buttons to keyboard actions. Its documented shortcut is Ctrl+F1 on Windows and Linux, and Cmd+F1 on macOS. The shortcut and mapper details can differ by emulator version, so use the DOSBox Staging documentation for that build.

  4. Repeat for the remaining actions, then test the bindings in the game. Change them if an input triggers the wrong action or conflicts with another binding.

GOG’s Mortal Kombat 2 guide demonstrates selecting an in-game keyboard control such as the up arrow, adding a binding, and pressing the matching controller input. Its menu sequence applies to that game and its packaged environment, not every DOSBox game. Use it as a concrete example, alongside the GOG setup guide.

Choosing between DOSBox mapping and Steam Input

If you launch through Steam, Steam Input may provide another place to configure controller bindings. A mapping can still fail if its chosen input style is unsupported by the game, as Valve notes in its Steam controller configuration guidance.

On Windows, Steamworks documentation says the Steam overlay hooks traditional gamepad APIs—including XInput, DirectInput, RawInput, and Windows.Gaming.Input—and injects an emulated Xbox controller device. Which configuration works depends on how the game and its DOSBox wrapper receive input. Valve describes the behavior in its Steam Input documentation.

Setup route Use it when What to configure
DOSBox joystick emulation The game has native joystick support. Choose a suitable joysticktype, then calibrate in the operating system and game when available.
DOSBox key mapper The game is keyboard-only or its joystick path does not work. Bind controller inputs to the game’s existing keyboard controls.
Steam Input You launch through Steam and want to configure controller input there. Choose an input style the game and its DOSBox wrapper can receive; support is not assured for every configuration.
