To use a Commodore 64 font on a website without breaking readability, apply it selectively to short display text—such as a heading, label, or logo-like element—and keep paragraphs in a familiar text face. Load a font file with CSS @font-face only when its license permits web embedding, then test fallback behavior, character coverage, text enlargement, contrast, and narrow-screen layout.
Choose a C64-style font that fits your use
Font files are not interchangeable just because they share a retro look. Check the specific font’s license, supplied web formats, glyph coverage, and appearance at the size where you plan to use it. Confirm it includes the site’s language, diacritics, punctuation, and symbols; missing characters may appear in a different fallback font.

| Option | Source-reported details | What to check before using it |
|---|---|---|
| Style C64 Pro / C64 Pro Mono | The package page lists TTF, OTF, WOFF, WOFF2, and EOT formats and reports 304 unique C64 glyphs. Its license permits embedding supplied variants with @font-face under conditions including no modification and retaining the supplied filenames. |
Read the license and preserve the original filenames. It also prohibits selling the font, distributing it for direct download, or including it in a font collection. |
| zeiche/c64font | The repository lists TTF and OTF files; its README describes Latin, PETSCII, box-drawing, block, and other mappings and states CC0 1.0. | Confirm the license and terms for the exact file you deploy. Check whether a browser-ready format is available; convert only if the license permits it. |
| Pet Me 64 | Kreative Korp describes it as the 40-column Commodore 64 version in its Pet Me family, with added Unicode/PETSCII support. | Inspect current download terms and test the glyphs your site needs. |
| haabe/retro-fonts C64 variants | The repository describes WOFF and WOFF2 variants with Latin subsetting, includes a CSS example, and claims free personal and commercial use. | Verify the current repository license and package terms; a summary claim is not a substitute for the exact license text. |
| Sixtyfour | Fontelio describes Jens Kutílek’s monospaced C64/Amiga-inspired design and identifies SIL OFL 1.1. | Verify the source project and license file. Treat it as inspired by the aesthetic, not necessarily a faithful original C64 character set. |
Do not infer one project’s permissions or character coverage from another. Availability and license terms can change, so check the current source and license before deployment.

CSS @font-face tells the browser where a web font is and how to identify it. The following is a generic pattern, not a claim that a particular filename or license applies to every C64 font. Replace the path with the actual licensed file and scope the style to the elements that need it.

@font-face {
font-family: "C64Display";
src: url("/fonts/c64-pro.woff2") format("woff2");
font-style: normal;
font-weight: 400;
font-display: swap;
}
.c64-display {
font-family: "C64Display", "Courier New", monospace;
}
Use this pattern only if the chosen font’s license permits web embedding. For example, Style’s license requires unmodified supplied files and the original filenames; a sample path in CSS does not override those terms. W3C explains web fonts and the CSS @font-face technique.
Keep words as text rather than converting them to images. Text rendered in a web font remains selectable and searchable, and the browser can scale it. A fallback stack also keeps text available if the custom font fails to load. Test the page with the custom font disabled to see how the fallback looks.

Keep the retro style from harming readability
Use it for short elements, not automatically for body copy
A highly stylized face can be effective for a compact heading, badge, or label, but it may be tiring to read across long paragraphs. Reserving it for short display elements is practical design advice, not a font-specific WCAG rule; WCAG does not require a particular family or limit a C64 font to headings.
Check text enlargement and reflow
WCAG 2.1 Success Criterion 1.4.4 says, “Except for captions and images of text, text can be resized without assistive technology up to 200 percent without loss of content or functionality.” Test enlargement to 200% and look for clipped text, overlapping lines, truncated navigation, fixed-height containers, and controls that become difficult to use. The criterion and its scope are explained by W3C WAI.

Check contrast instead of trusting the palette
WCAG 2.1 Success Criterion 1.4.3 sets a minimum contrast ratio of 4.5:1 for ordinary text and 3:1 for large text, subject to the criterion’s exceptions. A retro color scheme does not guarantee sufficient contrast. See W3C WAI’s explanation of minimum contrast.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- Inspired by the classics. Compatible with Windows 10(1903) or above, and Android 9.0 or above.
- Programmable keys, Dual Super Buttons, and Super Stick, with independent control panel.
- 87 keys. Top mount style with Kailh Box White Switches.
- Double-Shot ABS keycaps with SA profile. (C64 Edition only)
- Hot-swappable PCB. Support n-key rollover.
Test glyphs, fallbacks, and small screens
- Check every character the page needs, including accented letters, punctuation, and symbols; a font may cover some but not all of them.
- Inspect mixed rendering where unsupported characters fall back to another font, as well as the page with the custom font unavailable.
- At narrow widths and enlarged text, check wrapping, horizontal overflow, and whether navigation and controls remain usable.
- Record the exact font source, version, and license. A desktop font installed on a computer is not automatically licensed for self-hosting: Microsoft’s font FAQ distinguishes CSS naming of installed fonts from self-hosting and converting Windows fonts.
A quick pre-launch checklist
- The chosen font’s license permits the intended web use, and any file or naming conditions are met.
- The font contains the characters required by the site, and its fallback remains legible.
- The C64 styling is limited to the elements where its appearance is useful.
- Text remains usable at 200% enlargement, with no lost content or functionality.
- Text contrast meets the applicable WCAG threshold, and narrow layouts do not clip or overflow.
