Treat an inflatable or foam float as a toy, never as drowning protection. If your infant is in or near a pool, stay within arm’s reach, attentive and close enough to keep a hand on them. A float does not make it safe to step away, look at your phone or supervise from beside the pool.
Are baby pool floats safe?
A float may be used as a pool toy, but it is not a safety device and does not prevent drowning. The CDC warns against relying on air-filled or foam toys for safety; floaties, armbands and water wings can slip off. Drowning can happen in seconds and is often silent. In the United States, it is the leading cause of death for children ages 1–4, according to the CDC’s 2025 drowning overview.

That means a baby in a float still needs the same close, attentive adult supervision as a baby without one. Being nearby is not enough if you cannot act immediately.

How to supervise a baby in or near a pool
Use touch supervision: stay within arm’s reach and close enough to keep a hand on your baby. The adult responsible for watching should give the child undivided attention, without a phone, reading, alcohol or other distractions. If you need to leave, explicitly hand supervision to another attentive adult; do not assume someone else has taken over. CDC and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) both emphasize close supervision around water. See the CDC’s drowning-prevention guidance and the AAP’s swim-safety advice.

What to use instead of a pool float
For activities where a flotation device is appropriate, distinguish a pool toy from a properly fitted U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket. CDC guidance calls for life jackets for children in and around natural water and says weaker swimmers may use them in pools. Follow the jacket’s label and guidance for your child and activity. A life jacket is not a substitute for close adult supervision.
| Option | Purpose and safety status | Supervision |
|---|---|---|
| Inflatable or foam pool float | A toy, not a drowning-prevention device; it can slip off. | Stay within arm’s reach and maintain touch supervision. |
| U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket | A distinct flotation device for applicable activities; fit and use it according to its label and guidance. CDC specifically advises life jackets around natural water and says weaker swimmers may use them in pools. | Adult supervision is still required; it does not make a child safe unattended. |
Are infant neck floats safe?
Neck floats are not the same as ordinary pool rings or seat-style floats. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) reported 115 incidents involving infant neck floats from January 2019 through January 2024, including two reported infant fatalities and two injuries requiring hospitalization. These are reports received by the CPSC, not an estimate of risk per use or a count of all incidents.

A federal mandatory safety standard for infant neck floats took effect June 15, 2026, for products manufactured after that date. It addresses slipping through the float, restraint-system failure and submersion without slip-through. The standard applies to infant neck floats—not every kind of baby pool float—and does not establish that a neck float is risk-free or replaces supervision. The CPSC continues to warn against Otteroo LUMI, MINI and earlier models. Read its June 15, 2026 warning and announcement. No flotation product substitutes for constant adult supervision, as CPSC Acting Chairman Peter A. Feldman put it.

Reduce pool risks when the water is not in use
Supervision while swimming is only one layer of prevention. CDC recommends a four-sided pool fence at least four feet high that separates the pool from the house, with a self-closing, self-latching gate. Remove toys from the pool area when it is not in use so they do not draw a child toward the water. These are general U.S. prevention recommendations; local requirements may differ.

When do swim lessons make sense?
Swim lessons can add a layer of protection for children who are old enough, but they are not a substitute for supervision or a reason to rely on a float. AAP recommends lessons begin after a child’s first birthday and says there are no data to recommend infant swim lessons. Follow the AAP guidance on swim lessons when deciding what is appropriate for your child.
