What must work for the stream to reach YouTube
The setup depends on several parts working together: the Pi and its operating system, the modem’s USB mode and Linux support, the SIM and mobile-data plan, the carrier’s coverage and APN, the video source and encoding load, and a sufficiently stable upload connection. Check each layer before relying on the stream.

- USB and Linux: The Pi must recognize the modem in a mode supported by its networking stack.
- Mobile data: The SIM, plan, device, and local network must be compatible; configure the carrier’s current APN.
- Encoding and bandwidth: The Pi must be able to encode or pass through the source, and the connection must sustain the selected stream settings.
- YouTube ingest: FFmpeg needs the current ingest URL and private stream key for the YouTube event.
Identify the Pi, operating system, and video source
Before buying a modem or copying a command, record the exact Raspberry Pi model and OS release. Also identify whether FFmpeg will stream a file, a camera feed, or a capture input; the desired resolution and frame rate; whether audio is needed; and whether FFmpeg must encode the video or can send already encoded media. Those details affect software, performance, and configuration.
Raspberry Pi’s camera documentation describes FFmpeg/libav integration and hardware H.264 encoding where available. Encoding capability varies by model and software path; Pi 5 uses software video encoders, which can add latency in real-time use. Check modem, SIM, and installation compatibility
Confirm the exact modem model and how it presents itself over USB. Some devices expose interfaces that are not supported by the modem-management software you plan to use. ModemManager supports mobile broadband devices over multiple protocols, but its documentation says devices exposing only a network port without a control port are not supported by ModemManager. A “4G” label alone is not proof that the device will work with a Pi. Check the ModemManager device-type documentation and the modem maker’s Linux documentation before purchase or setup.
For the chosen Indian operator and the actual installation location, verify the modem’s LTE bands, SIM and device requirements, coverage, plan terms, data limits, and fair-use conditions. These vary by device, operator, plan, and location; there is no single carrier or plan that can be recommended without those details.

Consider power and placement as part of compatibility. Check the modem’s power requirements and antenna arrangement, and test the specific Pi/modem combination. A powered USB hub may help if the setup needs additional power or stability, but it is not a universal requirement.
Connect the modem using the OS networking stack
First determine which network manager is active on the installed OS. Raspberry Pi OS Bookworm uses NetworkManager by default, and Raspberry Pi documents nmcli for Lite or headless networking. Instructions written for another release or networking stack may not apply. Consult the Raspberry Pi networking documentation for the relevant OS context.

- Insert the SIM and modem, then check recognition. Confirm that the Pi detects the USB device and that the installed OS and modem-management stack expose a usable mobile broadband connection. If it appears only as an unsupported network interface, check the device’s USB mode and support documentation before proceeding.
- Configure the mobile connection in the active network manager. Use NetworkManager tools such as
nmclionly when NetworkManager is active. On another OS or release, follow that system’s networking method rather than assuming the same commands. - Enter the carrier’s current APN. Obtain the APN from the selected operator for the specific SIM and plan. NetworkManager’s mobile broadband settings use an APN for the cellular data session; the correct value matters for internet access and may affect billing. See the NetworkManager settings reference.
- Confirm internet access and reconnect behavior. Verify the Pi can reach the internet through the modem, then test what happens after a cellular interruption. Do not treat a connected indicator alone as proof of a stable route to YouTube.
Measure upload at the stream location
There is no verified India-wide sustained-upload figure for this particular Pi, modem, carrier, and YouTube workflow. Measure the connection where the Pi will actually run, and repeat checks at relevant times. A single speed-test result or a modem’s advertised capability does not establish what the connection can sustain during a live stream.
- Run repeated upload and stability checks at the final installation location and during the times the stream is expected to operate.
- Choose a bitrate below the reliably sustained upload rate, leaving headroom for variation and other traffic. Do not set the stream to the highest one-off result.
- Repeat the test after changing modem placement, antenna arrangement, or network configuration; these changes can affect the result.
- Check the data plan’s limits and fair-use terms against the expected stream duration and bitrate.
Create the YouTube stream and configure FFmpeg
In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the event and copy its current stream URL and private stream key into the encoder configuration. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Keep the stream key private, and use the current event’s ingest details rather than a key or URL copied from an unrelated setup. Refer to YouTube’s encoder setup instructions and YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.

Set resolution, frame rate, and bitrate to values supported by both the Pi’s encoding or passthrough path and the measured upload connection. The topic does not identify a Pi model, source format, or uplink measurement, so a universal FFmpeg command or bitrate would be misleading. If the source is already encoded, check whether it can be passed through without re-encoding; if it must be encoded, verify that the Pi can handle the chosen settings without unacceptable latency or dropped frames.

- Start the YouTube event and copy the event’s current ingest URL and stream key.
- Configure FFmpeg for the chosen source, encoding or passthrough path, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and YouTube ingest destination.
- Start FFmpeg and check the incoming preview in YouTube Live Control Room before going live to viewers.
- Confirm both video and audio, if used, and watch for ingest warnings or unstable playback before relying on the stream.
Follow YouTube’s current copyright rules for any music, video, or other material in the stream. Permission to use a file outside YouTube does not by itself establish that it is cleared for a YouTube live broadcast. Avoid assuming that repeatedly streaming prerecorded material guarantees eligibility for monetization; channel eligibility and policy decisions are separate from whether an encoder connection works.

Test recovery before unattended use
A successful preview proves only that the chain works at that moment. Before leaving it unattended, test the failure cases that apply to the setup:
- Interrupt and restore the cellular connection, then confirm the modem and OS reconnect and FFmpeg can resume sending.
- If the modem can re-enumerate after a disconnect, check whether the Pi and network manager recover the connection.
- Restart the Pi and verify that networking and the stream can be started again as intended.
- Stop and restart FFmpeg, then confirm the YouTube preview receives the stream.
No specific modem/carrier combination or measured uptime is established for this configuration. Treat recovery as something to test on your hardware and network, not an assumed result.
