YouTube provides the live destination, stream URL, stream key, and scheduling controls; its documented tools do not establish a native day/night playlist scheduler. Confirm that your chosen workflow can change playlists on a clock without ending the broadcast, then test both transitions before launch.
Choose how to keep the stream running
The stream needs an encoder or hosted service to send video and audio to YouTube. The day/night schedule is an additional capability: YouTube’s documentation covers creating and managing a live stream, but does not document timed switching between music playlists. Ask any provider specifically whether scheduled playlist changes keep the same live broadcast running, and verify the behavior in a test.

For any option, check clock-based playlist changes, recovery after interruption, local equipment requirements, archive behavior, rights support, and total cost. YouTube’s directory is not a neutral feature or price comparison.
Prepare the music and visuals
Clear every track and visual for YouTube Live, the territories where viewers may watch, and any archive or replay you intend to offer. YouTube’s livestream terms say creators must have the rights needed to exploit live and archived content worldwide, including applicable music rights from artists, labels, publishers, and other rights participants. - Keep permission records, license terms, track lists, and rights-holder contact details for both playlists.
- Ask rights holders that use Content ID to allowlist your channel before launch. YouTube warns that licensed third-party content can still be interrupted if the channel is not on the owner’s allowlist.
- Do not assume attribution or a consumer music-streaming subscription grants broadcast rights.
- Decide what should happen if a playlist ends, a track becomes unavailable, or a scheduled transition fails. Prepare a cleared fallback selection.
YouTube checks live streams for third-party matches. A placeholder may replace a stream when third-party content is identified, and unresolved matches can cause interruption or termination. An archived stream may receive a Content ID claim after it ends. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.
Enable live streaming and create the YouTube destination
- Check channel eligibility. YouTube’s live-streaming tips say the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. First-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours. Check YouTube live streaming tips before scheduling a launch.
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. From the Manage tab, create a scheduled stream, or create a stream directly. Scheduling can make an upcoming stream visible and let viewers opt into notifications.
- Select or create a stream key. Configure your encoder with YouTube’s stream URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: anyone who has it can send a feed to your stream.
- Review stream settings. YouTube lets you reuse stream settings and offers auto-start and auto-stop controls. Set these to match your encoder’s behavior; they do not provide the missing timed day/night playlist scheduler. See Manage live stream settings.
YouTube’s encoder setup instructions are at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder. Expensive equipment is not required to start, but your chosen setup must be able to run continuously and perform the scheduled playlist changes.

Configure and test the day/night schedule
Configure playlist timing in the encoder, automation layer, or hosted service that actually provides it—not in YouTube Studio unless the provider’s documented workflow specifically puts it there. Use the time zone you intend to operate in, and account for any daylight-saving changes relevant to that schedule.
- Load the cleared daytime and nighttime selections and set the intended change times.
- Choose what plays between selections and when a playlist ends. Confirm the fallback is also rights-cleared.
- Start with an unlisted or private test. Check the Live Control Room preview, audio levels, visual loop, stream status, watch page, and playback on a mobile device.
- Observe both day-to-night and night-to-day transitions. Confirm the live broadcast remains continuous, the correct playlist resumes after a reconnect, and a failed change does not leave viewers with silence.
- Test recovery after an encoder or network interruption and document how an operator can restart the feed. YouTube recommends setting up the encoder in advance, previewing before going live, checking playback access, testing backup encoder failover, and monitoring audio and video.
Plan monitoring, chat, and archives
Decide who—or what—will detect silent audio, a frozen visual, a failed playlist change, or a disconnected encoder. Write down the recovery steps and who can contact the music rights holder. If chat is enabled, set moderation expectations and choose comment handling and DVR options in YouTube’s live-stream settings. DVR affects whether viewers can pause or rewind.

YouTube’s encoder guide says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That condition does not establish that a 24-hour broadcast will produce one complete replay. Plan how you will handle stream segments and replay availability, and check YouTube’s current behavior rather than promising a full automatic archive.
