Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Capture the page with a browser automation tool such as Playwright, then upload the resulting image to object storage. For browser-to-storage uploads, keep long-lived storage credentials on a trusted backend: have it create a short-lived, narrowly scoped presigned URL, then let the browser send the screenshot directly. This guide shows both a Node.js server upload and the presigned-URL pattern, including the settings that vary among S3-compatible providers.
Choose where the screenshot is captured and uploaded
The right flow depends on where your browser runs and whether the client needs the image. In all cases, avoid putting long-lived storage credentials in browser code.

| Workflow | Credential location | Upload path | Use it when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Browser automation and server upload | Trusted server or worker | Browser automation returns bytes; the server uploads them to storage. | The capture already runs in a backend job, or you want to avoid browser CORS and presigning complexity. |
| Browser capture and presigned PUT | Backend signs a constrained request; browser receives only the temporary URL | Screenshot bytes go from the browser directly to storage. | The screenshot is captured in the user’s browser and you want to avoid routing the file through your application server. |
| Browser-based POST | Backend supplies a signed POST policy and fields | Browser submits a multipart form directly to storage. | Your provider’s POST policy workflow fits your metadata, policy, or form-upload needs. |
A direct upload reduces the amount of image data your application server must relay, but it requires correct signing and browser CORS configuration. A server-mediated upload gives the backend control of the transfer and avoids browser-to-bucket CORS, at the cost of carrying the file through your backend.

Install and capture bytes
This Node.js example captures a full-page PNG as a buffer. It uses an existing browser and page, so adapt the navigation and browser setup to your application.
import { chromium } from 'playwright';
const browser = await chromium.launch();
try {
const page = await browser.newPage({ viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 } });
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
const screenshot = await page.screenshot({
type: 'png',
fullPage: true,
scale: 'css'
});
// screenshot is a Node.js Buffer, ready for an SDK upload.
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
For a viewport-only image, omit fullPage or set it to false. To capture a particular element, use a locator screenshot such as await page.locator('main').screenshot({ type: 'png' }). For a local file instead of bytes, pass path: 'page.png' to page.screenshot().
Choose the capture dimensions deliberately
- Viewport: captures only the visible browser area; useful for a user-visible state or a fixed-size visual test.
- Full page: captures the scrollable page, which can produce a much larger image. Lazy-loaded content may need explicit scrolling or other preparation before capture if it does not load until it approaches the viewport.
- Element: captures a selected component, reducing unrelated page content.
- Scale:
cssproduces output at CSS-pixel dimensions;deviceuses device scale and can yield a larger, denser image. Choose based on whether the file is for inspection, archiving, or pixel-sensitive comparison. - Format: PNG is lossless and suitable for sharp UI details; JPEG is lossy and can reduce size for photographic pages; WebP offers another image option where downstream viewers support it. Ensure your chosen content type and file extension agree.
Upload from a trusted Node.js process
For a server-side capture worker, the AWS SDK for JavaScript v3 can target AWS S3 or a compatible endpoint by configuring the client endpoint. The endpoint mechanism is documented by the AWS SDK for JavaScript v3; it does not establish that every provider uses identical region, addressing, or signing settings.

import { chromium } from 'playwright';
import { S3Client, PutObjectCommand } from '@aws-sdk/client-s3';
const bucket = process.env.S3_BUCKET;
const key = `screenshots/${crypto.randomUUID()}.png`;
const s3 = new S3Client({
region: process.env.S3_REGION,
endpoint: process.env.S3_ENDPOINT
// Add provider-required addressing or signing options only as documented
// by that provider.
});
const browser = await chromium.launch();
try {
const page = await browser.newPage({ viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 } });
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
const image = await page.screenshot({ type: 'png', fullPage: true });
await s3.send(new PutObjectCommand({
Bucket: bucket,
Key: key,
Body: image,
ContentType: 'image/png'
}));
console.log(`Uploaded ${key}`);
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
The example assumes your installed Node.js runtime provides crypto.randomUUID(); otherwise generate a unique key using an approved UUID library. The code uses the standard SDK S3 client shape, but endpoint, region, authentication, path-style versus virtual-hosted addressing, and signing requirements must be confirmed for the chosen compatible service.
Upload directly from a browser with a presigned URL
A presigned URL separates permission from file transfer. A trusted backend authenticates the application user, chooses or validates the object key, and signs a specific upload request. The browser receives that short-lived URL and uploads the screenshot without receiving the backend’s long-lived storage credentials. AWS documents this approach for S3 uploads; compatible providers may differ in signing and policy semantics.

Backend: sign an upload request
One possible AWS SDK for JavaScript v3 pattern is to presign a PutObjectCommand. This server endpoint must be protected by your application’s own user authentication and authorization. Validate the requested content type and any object metadata instead of trusting arbitrary client input.

Key: key,
ContentType: contentType
});
const uploadUrl = await getSignedUrl(s3, command, { expiresIn: 300 });
res.json({ uploadUrl, key, contentType });
}
The five-minute expiry here is an example choice, not a universal recommendation or provider guarantee. Keep the URL lifetime as short as the workflow allows and grant the signing identity only the permissions the workflow needs. AWS states that presigned URLs are bearer tokens that grant access to whoever possesses them; do not log them, expose them in analytics, or place them in public pages.
Browser: capture, then PUT the bytes
After obtaining the URL from your authenticated backend, send the screenshot bytes using the exact method and any signed headers expected by the URL.

const image = await page.screenshot({ type: 'png', fullPage: true });

headers: { 'Content-Type': contentType },
body: image
});
if (!uploaded.ok) throw new Error(`Storage upload failed: ${uploaded.status}`);
console.log(`Uploaded ${key}`);
If the backend includes ContentType in the signed command, send the same content type in the browser request. A mismatch can invalidate the signature. Configure the bucket or provider’s CORS policy to allow your application’s origin, the PUT method, and the request headers used; the exact syntax and allowed headers are provider-specific.
When POST is preferable to PUT
A presigned PUT authorizes a request to write an object at a chosen key. Browser-based POST instead uses a signed policy and form fields, commonly submitted as multipart form data. AWS documents direct browser POST uploads, but the policy fields and supported constraints should be taken from the selected provider’s official documentation. Choose POST when its policy-based form workflow is useful; do not assume a PUT URL can be used as a POST or that compatible services interpret policies identically.
Pick object names and overwrite behavior
In S3, uploading to a key that already exists replaces the object at that key. Decide whether each capture should replace a known current image or create an immutable historical object.

| Key strategy | Behavior | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
Stable key, such as pages/home.png |
Repeated uploads target the same object and replace its current contents. | A latest screenshot used by a dashboard or fixed public image URL. |
Unique or versioned key, such as screenshots/<uuid>.png |
Each capture is a separate object; application logic can retain or expire old versions. | Audit records, regression runs, or historical comparisons. |
Do not let an untrusted browser choose arbitrary keys or buckets. Have the backend determine the permitted key namespace or validate a supplied identifier against the authenticated user and intended operation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Configure an S3-compatible provider carefully
“S3-compatible” describes an API family, not a promise that every operational detail matches Amazon S3. Before deploying, verify these settings in the provider’s own documentation:
- The endpoint URL and required region value.
- The signing version and credential format expected by the provider.
- Whether requests need path-style or virtual-hosted bucket addressing.
- SDK compatibility and any required client configuration for the endpoint.
- CORS origins, methods, and headers for browser-direct uploads.
- Maximum object size and any upload constraints relevant to your capture dimensions.
- Presigned URL expiry, temporary credential behavior, and how the provider handles signed content types.
AWS documents custom endpoint configuration in its JavaScript SDK v3, but that is not evidence that every compatible service accepts identical options. Test against the selected provider rather than carrying AWS assumptions over unchanged.
Handle expiry, failures, and cost predictably
- Expired or invalid presigned URL: request a fresh URL from the backend and retry the upload; do not keep retrying the same expired link.
- Temporary signing credentials: a URL signed with temporary credentials may stop working when those credentials expire, even if the URL’s requested expiry is later.
- Partial or failed transfer: treat a non-success HTTP response as a failed upload and do not mark the screenshot stored until the provider confirms success. Retry with a new authorization when appropriate.
- Duplicate retry: a retry against the same key may replace the first successful upload. Use unique keys when each attempt must remain separately auditable.
- Large full-page output: full-page and device-scale images can be larger than a viewport capture. Choose dimensions and format for the intended use, and confirm provider upload limits.
- Cost: no performance or cost figure follows from the documented workflow alone. Storage, requests, transfer, and application compute depend on your provider, usage, retention policy, and deployment. Check the provider’s current pricing and measure your own capture workload.
Common troubleshooting
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Browser reports a CORS error | Bucket CORS does not allow the page origin, PUT method, or request headers. | Allow the exact application origin and upload method, and include headers used by the signed request. Confirm provider-specific CORS behavior. |
| Upload returns an authorization or signature error | Expired URL, wrong HTTP method, altered URL, wrong credentials or endpoint, or a signed header mismatch. | Request a new URL; use the exact method and headers; verify endpoint, region, signing configuration, and clock/credential validity. |
| Content-Type mismatch or signature mismatch | The browser sent a different content type from the one included in the signed request. | Sign and send the same value, such as image/png, and ensure the screenshot format matches. |
| Object appears in an unexpected location | Provider addressing or endpoint configuration differs from the client’s assumption. | Verify endpoint, region, bucket addressing style, and the exact key being uploaded. |
| Upload succeeds but overwrites an earlier image | The request reused an existing object key. | Use unique/versioned keys, or deliberately retain a stable key only when replacement is intended. |
| Screenshot is blank or incomplete | Navigation, rendering, lazy loading, or capture timing did not match the page. | Wait for the relevant page state or selector, verify the target URL and element, and decide whether viewport or full-page capture is intended. |

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a browser upload need AWS credentials?
No. With a presigned upload flow, the browser receives a temporary URL for a constrained request, not the storage credentials used by the backend to sign it.
Can I use the same code for every S3-compatible provider?
The general workflow is portable, but endpoint, region, signing, addressing, CORS, and policy details can vary. Confirm those settings with your provider.
