How to Compress Screenshots and Images for the Web

Resize images to the largest size your page needs, choose compression based on whether the file is a screenshot or photo, and compare the result before publishing.

To compress images for the web, first resize each file to the largest dimensions the page actually needs, then choose an encoder based on its content. Start with lossless PNG, WebP, or AVIF for screenshots, text, charts, and line art; test lossy JPEG, WebP, or AVIF for photographs. Compare the resulting files at their intended display size before publishing—there is no quality setting that works for every image.

Choose an approach for the image you have

Screenshots are different from photographs: crisp text, interface edges, icons, and flat-color areas make blur, ringing, and colored fringes easy to spot. Photographs contain texture and gradual tonal changes, so lossy compression can often reduce their size without an obvious difference. These are starting points, not guarantees; compare encodings for the specific image.

Image or requirement Good candidates to test What to check
Screenshot, UI, chart, text, or line art Lossless PNG, WebP, or AVIF Check small text, thin lines, icons, and colored text on flat backgrounds for loss of sharpness. The smallest file is not necessarily the clearest.
Photograph with many colors and textures Lossy JPEG, WebP, or AVIF; compare with a lossless option if needed Look for visible artifacts and loss of detail. A quality percentage is an encoder-specific control, not a universal target.
Image that needs transparency PNG or a WebP/AVIF encoding that preserves alpha Verify the converted file still has transparency. JPEG does not support an alpha channel.
Visitors using a mixed browser set A modern format with a fallback Confirm the fallback is present and that your publishing system retains the intended markup and file types.

MDN notes that screenshots, diagrams, logos, and line art are cases where lossless encoding can avoid visible degradation, while lossy formats can suit photographs. Web.dev puts the practical limit plainly: “When compressing, there isn’t a universal setting suitable for all cases.” (MDN image formats; web.dev image performance)

A practical workflow for compressing an image

  1. Keep the original. Save an untouched source file so you can redo the conversion if the compressed result looks poor or needs different dimensions.
  2. Identify the content and transparency needs. Treat text-heavy screenshots and diagrams as sharp-edge content. Check whether the image needs a transparent background before choosing a format.
  3. Resize to the actual display requirement. Find the largest size at which the page displays the image. Do not upload a much larger raster if the layout never displays it at that size. For pages that display an image at different widths, prepare a modest set of size candidates.
  4. Encode a few plausible candidates. For screenshots, compare lossless PNG, WebP, and AVIF options. For photographs, compare lossy JPEG, WebP, or AVIF. Squoosh can encode images in a browser; ImageOptim is another option. MDN also names MozJPEG as an option in Squoosh for JPEG encoding. (MDN images)
  5. Compare the files side by side. Record dimensions and file sizes, then inspect each candidate at the size it will appear on the page. For screenshots, look closely at small text, thin lines, icons, and colored text on flat backgrounds. Reject files whose savings come with distracting blur, halos, ringing, or color fringes.
  6. Choose the smallest acceptable result. There is no universal quality percentage. A value suggested for one encoder or image type is only a starting point; judge the output itself.
  7. Publish and measure on the real page. Verify that your CMS or build pipeline has not changed the format or markup. Check the page with a performance tool and review it on the target site: format choice alone cannot predict image-specific savings or prove a page-speed improvement.

What WebP and AVIF can—and cannot—promise

WebP supports both lossy and lossless compression, but the savings depend on the source image, encoder, and comparison method. Google for Developers reports that lossy WebP images are 25–34% smaller than comparable JPEG images at equivalent SSIM quality, and that lossless WebP images are 26% smaller than PNGs. Its separate compression guide describes WebP as about 30% smaller than comparable JPEG and PNG images at equivalent visual quality. These are published format comparisons, not a promise that a particular screenshot will shrink by those amounts. Do not assume that AVIF or WebP will always produce a smaller screenshot than PNG. Encode the actual image, compare file size and appearance, and retain whichever result meets your quality and compatibility needs. If transparency matters, confirm that it survives the conversion.

Serve the right size and format in the browser

Use responsive size candidates when display widths vary

With srcset and sizes, the browser can choose an appropriate image candidate for the available layout. Keep a fallback URL in src, as Google Search Central recommends for responsive image markup. Here is a basic width-descriptor example; replace the example paths and sizes with files your site actually provides:

<img
  src="/images/dashboard-800.jpg"
  srcset="/images/dashboard-400.jpg 400w,
          /images/dashboard-800.jpg 800w,
          /images/dashboard-1200.jpg 1200w"
  sizes="(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 800px"
  alt="A dashboard showing monthly traffic">

The sizes value should describe the image’s rendered width in your layout; the candidates should be real files at their stated widths. Avoid making a separate file for every conceivable viewport. Each variant adds cache entries and HTML, and can increase origin or server costs. (Google Search Central: Image SEO best practices; web.dev image performance)

Offer a modern format with a fallback

Use <picture> to offer alternatives while keeping an <img> fallback. Browsers use the first supported matching source and otherwise fall back to the src image:

<picture>
  <source type="image/avif" srcset="/images/dashboard.avif">
  <source type="image/webp" srcset="/images/dashboard.webp">
  <img src="/images/dashboard.png"
       alt="A dashboard showing monthly traffic">
</picture>

Test the markup in the browsers and publishing system that matter to your site. If your server selects a format based on the request’s Accept header, make sure shared caches account for that variation so one format is not incorrectly served to every request. (Google Search Central: Image SEO best practices; web.dev image performance)

Lazy-load only images that do not need to appear immediately

Lazy loading can defer images outside or near the viewport, reducing downloads for images visitors do not reach. Do not apply it indiscriminately to images needed for initial rendering. Compression, correct dimensions, and delivery strategy work together; none is a substitute for checking the actual page.

When manual tools are enough—and when to automate

For a few images, a visual encoder such as Squoosh or ImageOptim lets you compare alternatives one at a time. A site with a large image library may benefit from an image CDN that automates resizing and browser-appropriate formats. MDN names Cloudinary, Image Engine, ImageKit, and imgix as examples. Automation reduces manual transformation work, but adds service cost, integration work, caching considerations, and decisions about how many variants to generate. (MDN images)

Troubleshooting compression and delivery

The compressed screenshot looks blurry or has colored edges

Lossy compression may have damaged small text and sharp boundaries. Re-encode from the untouched original using a lossless option, or use a less aggressive lossy setting and compare again at the intended display size.

The new format is not smaller

Results vary by image and encoder; conversion is not guaranteed to reduce bytes. Compare dimensions and actual file sizes, and keep the original format if it is the better result.

Transparency disappeared

The chosen encoding may not have preserved alpha, or the output format may not support it. Use PNG or an alpha-preserving WebP/AVIF mode, then inspect the result against a contrasting background.

The browser shows the wrong format or an old image

Check that the <picture> sources and <img src> fallback point to the intended files, and confirm that your CMS or build step retained them. If a server negotiates formats using Accept, verify that the shared cache varies on that header.

The page downloads a huge image on a small screen

Check the candidate widths in srcset and ensure sizes matches the rendered layout. If the page uses a single oversized source, create a small, practical set of right-sized candidates.

A performance score did not improve

Image compression alone does not establish a page-speed or Core Web Vitals improvement. Review the live page and measure it with a page performance tool; also check whether the image is correctly sized, whether off-screen images are deferred appropriately, and whether delivery or caching is affecting the result.
