Uploading a video to a VPS only puts the file on the server; it does not start a YouTube broadcast. To stream continuously, transfer your media to the VPS, configure a YouTube live stream, then run an encoder such as FFmpeg on the VPS to send the video to YouTube over RTMPS. You also need a plan for looping the media, watching stream health and restarting a failed process.
What you need before you start
- A VPS with enough disk space for your media and enough sustained outbound bandwidth for the stream’s bitrate. If you encode video on the server rather than send a compatible file as-is, you also need adequate CPU or GPU capacity.
- A video file stored on your computer and a file-transfer method that works with your VPS and operating system. The appropriate client and transfer steps vary; no particular client is required by the workflow.
- FFmpeg or another encoder that can publish to YouTube’s ingestion endpoint.
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled and access to Live Control Room.
- A way to keep the encoder process running and detect failures. A VPS can host a long-running process, but neither the VPS nor the connection is guaranteed to remain uninterrupted.
Make sure you have the rights to stream the video, music and other material in your file. YouTube’s copyright rules still apply to live broadcasts; uploading a file to your own server does not change those rights or make reused content eligible for monetization.

1. Transfer the video file to the VPS
Use a file-transfer method supported by your host and local system, such as a secure file-transfer client or a command-line transfer method. Connect using the server details and credentials supplied by your VPS provider, then place the video in a directory your encoder can read. Confirm the transfer completed and that the server has enough free disk space.
File transfer is only the staging step. The encoder running on the VPS must read the file and send a live audio-video feed to YouTube.

2. Create the YouTube stream and get its connection details
- Open YouTube Studio and enter Live Control Room.
- Create or select the live stream you want to use. In Stream settings, reveal the stream URL and stream key.
- Use the RTMPS URL shown there rather than assuming a plain RTMP address is appropriate. YouTube’s developer requirements specify an RTMPS protocol, a valid ingestion server and path, and port 443. The server hostname must also be available to the encoder for TLS SNI authentication.
- Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it, include it in screenshots, or leave it in a shared script or log. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before using it again.
RTMPS is RTMP protected by TLS/SSL, encrypting the connection to YouTube. YouTube also documents HLS as an ingest option for some encoder requirements, but RTMPS is the direct fit for the FFmpeg file-to-RTMP example below. Check your encoder’s support and the options shown in Live Control Room if you choose another ingest method. YouTube ingestion protocols
3. Check the video and choose encoder settings
YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265 or AV1 video, up to 60 frames per second, and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a 2-second keyframe interval; keyframes should not be more than 4 seconds apart. Match the output to the actual resolution and frame rate of your source and the sustained upload capacity of the VPS—not just its advertised peak network speed.

| AV1 or H.265, 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265, 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s recommendations for the listed codec, resolution and frame-rate combinations, not a guarantee that a particular VPS can sustain them. See the full, current YouTube live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions guidance for other output combinations.
If your file already uses compatible codecs and settings, sending its streams without re-encoding may reduce server workload. Whether that works depends on the file and encoder configuration; if you change resolution, frame rate, bitrate or codec, the VPS must perform the corresponding encoding work. The official sources do not prescribe one universal command for either case.

4. Start an encoder process on the VPS
FFmpeg documents the general pattern for reading a media file in real time and publishing it to an RTMP server:

This is an illustration, not a ready-to-run YouTube command. For your setup, replace the example input and destination with the actual file and YouTube endpoint, provide the stream key securely, and select compatible codecs and output settings. You must also configure looping if you want the file to repeat. The command does not by itself provide process supervision, automatic restart, or a guarantee of continuous operation. See the FFmpeg documentation for command options.
For a continuous broadcast, arrange for the media to repeat or build a playlist and ensure the encoder continues sending valid audio and video. A one-time file input normally reaches its end; do not assume the example command loops it. The exact loop and playlist configuration depends on the files and the FFmpeg setup.

5. Go live and verify the feed
Start the encoder, then check Live Control Room for the incoming signal and stream-health messages before starting or managing the broadcast. Test with representative movement and audio, not a silent or static sample. YouTube advises testing before going live and monitoring stream health during the event. If you see unstable delivery, lower the output settings until they fit the VPS’s sustained outbound capacity.

Keeping a stream running continuously
A continuous stream has two separate failure points: the encoder process on the VPS and the connection from that process to YouTube. The YouTube API documentation describes a 24/7 use case in which one broadcast remains ongoing while a second broadcast is created and completed on the same live stream. That is API resource behavior, not a promise that an encoder, VPS or network connection cannot fail. The reviewed documentation does not establish a universal maximum broadcast duration or guarantee uninterrupted VPS uptime. YouTube Live Streaming API: broadcasts and streams
For unattended operation, use a process-management approach appropriate to your VPS operating system to start the encoder at boot, monitor its exit status and restart it after failure. Check logs and YouTube’s stream-health messages; a restarted encoder may need to reconnect and the broadcast may need attention in Live Control Room. The exact service-manager configuration depends on the server OS and is not one-size-fits-all.
Common problems and fixes
- The file is on the VPS, but YouTube shows no signal: A transfer does not create a broadcast. Start the encoder and verify it is reading the intended file and publishing to the current YouTube ingest URL with the correct stream key.
- TLS or SSL connection error: Confirm you are using the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room, with the correct hostname and path. Verify the encoder makes a TLS connection to the required endpoint and supports SNI hostname handling; YouTube specifies port 443 for RTMPS ingestion.
- Connection timeout or immediate disconnect: Check that the endpoint is RTMPS rather than a cleartext RTMP connection pointed at an RTMPS destination. Confirm the VPS can reach the endpoint on port 443 and that the URL and key are current.
- Video stutters or stream health is poor: Reduce the bitrate or output quality to fit the VPS’s actual sustained upload capacity. Check the encoder’s output settings, then test again with representative sound and motion and watch YouTube’s stream-health feedback.
- The stream stops when the file ends: Configure a loop or a playlist in the encoder workflow. The basic FFmpeg example reads a file in real time but does not include looping or failure recovery.
- The encoder exits and the stream stays offline: Inspect its logs for file, codec, key or network errors, and configure process monitoring and restart behavior on the VPS. Restarting software cannot correct an invalid key, incompatible media or a blocked network connection.
- Audio is missing or incompatible: Check the source audio and encoder output; YouTube lists AAC and MP3 as supported audio codecs. Test the actual audio content before relying on an unattended broadcast.
When a VPS is the right approach
A VPS gives you direct control over the server, files, encoder and automation, and it can keep the work off your personal computer. In return, you are responsible for transferring media, selecting and maintaining the server, configuring the encoder and handling process and connection failures. Compare VPS options by sustained outbound bandwidth, storage, CPU or GPU capacity, operating-system access and reliability. No provider or plan can be recommended from the information here; requirements depend on your bitrate, workload and media library.
Or let it run in the cloud
