How to Run an FFmpeg YouTube Stream with systemd on Linux

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To keep an FFmpeg stream running under systemd, first test the FFmpeg command interactively, then place it in a service that runs as a dedicated unprivileged user and reads the YouTube stream key from a protected credential file. Prefer the RTMPS ingest URL shown in YouTube Studio. systemd can restart a failed local FFmpeg process, but that does not guarantee YouTube will keep the same live event active or uninterrupted.

1. Get the YouTube ingest URL and stream key

  1. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and select or create the stream you intend to use.

  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown in that stream’s settings. Use the URL supplied there rather than assuming a particular ingest hostname or path.

  3. Treat the key like a password. Do not put it in a public script, a shared command history, a support post, or a world-readable service file. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the credential used by the service.

    • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

YouTube’s encoder setup instructions describe the URL-and-key handoff. The key identifies your broadcast destination; anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to that destination.

2. Prefer RTMPS and choose the stream settings

Use the RTMPS address provided in Live Control Room when available. RTMPS encrypts the RTMP connection in transit, and YouTube recommends it. If the connection fails with a timeout or SSL error, verify the exact scheme and hostname in the supplied address; YouTube’s RTMPS guidance also identifies port 443 as a troubleshooting option when appropriate to the address.

For video, audio, frame rate, and bitrate, follow YouTube’s current live encoder settings for your chosen codec and output. The guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1, supports up to 60 fps, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), and accepts AAC or MP3 audio. Its H.264 examples recommend 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees that a particular connection or source will sustain them.

3. Build and test the FFmpeg command interactively

Before adding systemd, run FFmpeg from a terminal and confirm that YouTube receives a healthy preview. The general output form is:

ffmpeg [input options] -i /path/to/input  -f flv "RTMPS_URL/STREAM_KEY"

Replace the placeholders with the exact ingest address and key from Live Control Room, and use input and encoding options appropriate for your media. This is a command shape, not a complete command for every source: input type, codec, pixel format, frame rate, bitrate, and audio layout all affect the correct options. Consult FFmpeg’s protocol documentation for RTMP/RTMPS behavior and protocol options.

A key embedded in a command may be exposed through shell history or process inspection. For the interactive test, use a protected shell environment and a key-handling approach appropriate to your system; do not paste the full command into a shared terminal or public log. Once the test succeeds, move the secret into a root-protected credential file before enabling an unattended service.

4. Create a systemd service with a protected key

Use the unit syntax supported by the systemd version on your Linux distribution. Verify directives and credential handling in that distribution’s installed systemd documentation; service details can vary by version. The example below is a template, not a tested universal unit. It assumes a dedicated account named streamer, a script at /usr/local/bin/youtube-stream, and a protected key file at /etc/youtube-stream/stream-key. The script should read the key without printing it and construct the tested FFmpeg command.

[Unit]
Description=FFmpeg YouTube live stream
Wants=network-online.target
After=network-online.target

[Service]
Type=simple
User=streamer
Group=streamer
WorkingDirectory=/var/lib/youtube-stream
ExecStart=/usr/local/bin/youtube-stream
Restart=on-failure
RestartSec=5

[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target

Create the dedicated account and working directory using your distribution’s account-management tools. Store the key in a file readable only by root and the service account, with restrictive ownership and permissions. If your installed systemd version supports its credential mechanism, consider using that rather than placing secrets in the unit text. Do not assume that a systemd credential directive is available or behaves identically across distributions.

The Restart=on-failure and delay shown above are a basic local-process policy, not a promise of uninterrupted broadcast. Confirm that the chosen restart behavior suits your input and YouTube event workflow. A restarting FFmpeg process may reconnect, but the platform’s live event state and archive behavior are separate.

5. Enable, start, and validate the service

After saving the unit under the appropriate system service directory for your distribution, reload systemd’s unit definitions, enable the service at boot, and start it:

sudo systemctl daemon-reload
sudo systemctl enable --now youtube-stream.service

Check the service state and recent journal output:

sudo systemctl status youtube-stream.service
sudo journalctl -u youtube-stream.service -n 100 --no-pager

For ongoing logs, use sudo journalctl -u youtube-stream.service -f. Journal access and service file locations may differ according to distribution policy. Ensure FFmpeg or the wrapper does not print the stream key into the journal.

Then check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages. YouTube recommends testing with representative motion and audio, running a connection speed test, and monitoring health feedback; see its encoder settings and stream health guidance. A systemd service showing “active” proves that the local process is running, not that YouTube is receiving a valid, healthy stream.

6. Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom What to check Fix
Connection timeout or SSL error Compare the scheme, hostname, and port with the current RTMPS URL in Live Control Room. Use the supplied RTMPS address exactly. Where appropriate to that address, test the port 443 option mentioned in YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.
YouTube rejects the stream or reports poor health Review Live Control Room health messages, resolution, bitrate, frame rate, keyframe interval, audio/video codecs, and available upload capacity. Match the current encoder recommendations and run a representative preflight test. Reduce output demands if the connection cannot sustain them.
The service exits immediately or keeps restarting Inspect systemctl status and the unit journal for executable path, permissions, input availability, and FFmpeg errors. Correct the command or file access, test it interactively as the service user where practical, then restart the unit. Do not treat repeated process restarts as proof that YouTube has resumed the same event.
The key may have been exposed Check whether it appeared in a script, unit file, shell history, process listing, or log. Reset the key in Live Control Room, update the protected credential source, and restart the service.
The live event ends after FFmpeg stops sending Separate local restart behavior from YouTube’s event and archive handling. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived after the encoder stops sending content. See its encoder setup guidance; a systemd restart does not erase platform-side event limits.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want a prerecorded video or playlist to keep a YouTube channel live without leaving a Linux computer running, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos; it does not broadcast a live camera.
