YouTube accepts basic SubRip (.srt) files in plain UTF-8. Here are the steps, plus what to do if you have transcript text but no timings.
Upload an SRT file in YouTube Studio

Sign in to YouTube Studio.

Select Subtitles from the left menu, then choose the video you want to caption.

Choose Add language and select the language used in the SRT file.

In the language’s Subtitles row, choose Add.

Choose Upload file.

Select With timing if the SRT already contains timestamps. Choose Without timing if it does not.

Select the SRT file and choose Save.
YouTube also offers subtitle addition during video upload. If the labels differ in your Studio interface, open the video’s Subtitles section and use the upload-file option for the correct language. These steps follow YouTube Help’s “Add subtitles & captions” instructions, accessed October 3, 2026; the help page does not state a publication date.
Prepare the SRT file before uploading
A basic SRT caption block has a sequence number, a start and end timestamp, and the caption text. The timecodes tell YouTube when each line should appear. YouTube Help describes subtitle and caption files as containing the spoken text and timestamps for when each line should display.

Use a basic
.srtfile saved as plain text in UTF-8. UTF-8 is especially important for accurate display of non-English characters.Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy. -
Do not rely on styling or markup inside the file; YouTube does not recognize basic SRT styling markup.

Choose the right workflow for your captions

YouTube says transcript auto-sync works best for videos under an hour with clear speech and good audio. It does not recommend that workflow for videos longer than an hour or with poor audio quality. Play the video with the uploaded track and check both the wording and when each caption appears. If you find errors, edit the text or timestamps in Studio. You can also download the caption file, edit it in a plain-text editor, then upload the corrected file again. YouTube does not state a guaranteed processing time for a standard SRT upload, so allow for the track to appear without assuming a fixed wait.
