Stop the Project Zomboid server before copying, replacing, or downloading anything. Multiplayer worlds are stored in Zomboid/Saves/Multiplayer/<servername>/. To upload a world, place its complete folder there, make its name match the server name in the configuration files, and restart the server. To download or back up a world, copy that entire folder together with the matching server configuration and, for a complete rollback, the separate account database.
Prefer not to run the server on your own PC? Godlike.Host offers hosted Project Zomboid servers with free DDoS protection and up to three free backups a day.
What you need to know before moving a save
A Project Zomboid dedicated server does not use one single save file. The world is a folder containing the player database, vehicle database, and map-chunk files. The server chooses which folder to load from the name used by its configuration. A correct file transfer can therefore appear to fail if the folder and configuration names do not agree.

Stop the server first
Use the hosting control panel’s stop command, or shut down the dedicated-server process cleanly, before opening or copying the save. A running server may write different files at different moments. A copy made during that activity can contain an inconsistent mixture of world states and may not restore correctly.
Identify the server name
Replace <servername> in the paths below with the actual world name. The default server name is servertest, so a default installation normally uses Zomboid/Saves/Multiplayer/servertest/. The same name should be present in:

Where Project Zomboid server saves are stored
Windows
For the Windows account running the server, the usual base directory is C:Users<YourUser>Zomboid. The multiplayer save is therefore:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsC:Users<YourUser>ZomboidSavesMultiplayer<servername>
Linux
On Linux, the usual base directory is ~/Zomboid/ for the user that launches the server. The full path is:
~/Zomboid/Saves/Multiplayer/<servername>/
Linux servers can be configured with Java’s -Duser.home=<path> argument. When that option is used, the save is under the specified home path instead of the account’s normal home directory. If you cannot find ~/Zomboid, inspect the server start command for that argument.
Files inside the world folder
A normal multiplayer save includes files such as:
players.db, which contains server character data;vehicles.db, which contains vehicle state; andmap_*.binfiles, which contain the explored and changed world chunks.
The account, permission, and whitelist database is separate from the world folder: Zomboid/db/<servername>.db. Include this file when you need a complete server backup, not merely a copy of the map and characters.

How to download or back up a server save
A download is simply a copy from the server to your computer or another storage location. The safest backup preserves the save folder and the configuration that tells the server how to load it.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Stop the server. Confirm that the control panel reports it as stopped before transferring files.
- Open the server’s Zomboid directory. Browse to
Zomboid/Saves/Multiplayer/in the host’s file manager or connect to the server’s files with FTP. - Copy the complete world folder. Download
<servername>/, includingplayers.db,vehicles.db, and everymap_*.binfile. Do not select only the newest-looking map file. - Copy the matching configuration. Download
Zomboid/Server/<servername>.iniandZomboid/Server/<servername>_SandboxVars.luawith the save. - Include account data for a full backup. Also copy
Zomboid/db/<servername>.dbwhen you need to preserve whitelist, account, or permission information. - Store the copy separately. Put the downloaded folder and configuration files in a dated backup directory or other storage that is not the live server directory.
Keep the original server folder untouched until the downloaded copy has been checked. A backup that is overwritten during the same maintenance session cannot help if the replacement is damaged.
Using a host control-panel file manager
Panel file managers are usually the simplest option when the host exposes the complete Zomboid directory. Select the entire save folder and use the panel’s download or archive function. Exact button names and whether a folder can be downloaded as one archive vary by host, so follow the controls shown in that panel. Verify that the resulting archive or directory contains the database and map files listed above.
Using FTP
FTP clients such as FileZilla or WinSCP show the server’s directory tree and are useful when a panel limits folder depth. Connect with the credentials supplied by the host, browse to /Zomboid/Saves/Multiplayer/ in the FTP area, and download the complete named folder. Then browse to /Zomboid/Server/ and copy the two configuration files. Download the account database from /Zomboid/db/ if it is part of the backup.
How to upload a save to a Project Zomboid server
Uploading usually means replacing the destination world with a copy from another server, a previous backup, or a local dedicated-server installation. Do not merge selected files into a live world unless you have a specific reason and a tested recovery plan.

- Stop the destination server. Do this before deleting, renaming, or uploading any save files.
- Make a safety copy. Download or rename the destination’s existing
Zomboid/Saves/Multiplayer/<servername>/folder before changing it. This is your rollback if the imported world does not load. - Prepare the source folder. The folder you upload must contain the complete save, not just an individual
map_*.binfile. Preserve its databases and all map chunks. - Open the destination save directory. In FTP, go to
/Zomboid/Saves/Multiplayer. In a panel, open the equivalentZomboid/Saves/Multiplayerdirectory. - Upload the folder. Transfer the source save folder, then rename it so its folder name is exactly the world name configured for the destination server.
- Align the configuration names. Confirm that the destination has
Zomboid/Server/<servername>.iniand<servername>_SandboxVars.luawith the same base name as the uploaded folder. If the source world has a different name, either rename the folder and use matching destination configuration files or rename the configuration set consistently. - Resolve the player database before starting. Check whether the destination already has a
players.db. A database that does not match the imported world can prevent the server from starting. A host guide’s remedy is to convert the database to the multiplayer format when that conversion is available, or delete it. Deleting it removes the existing player data, so make a copy first and use deletion only when a reset is acceptable. - Start the server and test the world. Join with an expected character, inspect a familiar location, and check that vehicles and explored areas are present. Stop immediately and restore the safety copy if the server creates a new blank world or reports database errors.
Replacing the whole folder versus individual files
Replace the complete save folder for a normal migration or restore. Partial swaps can leave databases and map chunks from different moments or different worlds. A community report about moving a single-player world to a dedicated server found that replacing individual files did not work; treat that as practical warning rather than a formal compatibility guarantee.
Why the server starts an empty world
The most common cause is a name mismatch. The server looks for the folder named by its configuration. If the uploaded folder is called oldworld but the active files are servertest.ini and servertest_SandboxVars.lua, the process may create or load servertest while leaving oldworld untouched.
Check the three-name rule
- Save folder:
Zomboid/Saves/Multiplayer/<servername>/ - Server settings:
Zomboid/Server/<servername>.ini - Sandbox settings:
Zomboid/Server/<servername>_SandboxVars.lua
Compare spelling, capitalization, punctuation, and spaces. Correct the names while the server is stopped, then start it again. Do not delete the original folder until the expected world has loaded.
Handling players.db safely
players.db is the file most likely to create confusion during a migration. It stores multiplayer character data, and a mismatch between that database and the imported save can cause a crash or prevent a successful start.
Preserve it when the world and database belong together
When the source folder and its players.db came from the same server snapshot, upload them together. Keeping the pair together gives existing characters the best chance of appearing with their expected inventories and locations.

Convert it when the host supports conversion
Some hosting instructions recommend converting an incompatible database to the current multiplayer format. The exact conversion utility and interface depend on the host and game version; do not assume that a conversion option exists in every panel.
Delete it only for a deliberate reset
Deleting players.db can allow a fresh player database to be created, but it resets character data. Preserve a copy before deletion so that you can restore it if the reset was not intended.

FTP or control-panel file manager?
| Method | Best use | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| FTP with FileZilla or WinSCP | Moving complete folders and browsing the full server directory tree | Requires FTP credentials and a separate client |
| Host control-panel file manager | Quick downloads or uploads without installing a client | Folder depth, archive handling, and upload controls vary by host |
Choose the method that lets you transfer the entire folder without silently omitting database or map files. A convenient interface is not safer if it only exposes selected files.
Troubleshooting after an upload or restore
The server boots but the map is new
Stop the server and verify that the folder name matches both configuration filenames. Look for the imported folder in Zomboid/Saves/Multiplayer/; it may still be present under its old name. Restore the original folder if necessary, correct the names, and start again.
The server crashes while loading
Check for a mismatched or incompatible players.db. Restore the untouched copy, then test the source database separately. If the host provides a multiplayer-format conversion, use it; otherwise, deleting the database is a last resort because it removes player records.
Best Value
Characters are missing
Confirm that the uploaded players.db came from the same world snapshot. Also check that you did not start the server once with the wrong name and then inspect the newly created world instead of the imported one.
Vehicles or explored areas are gone
Recheck that vehicles.db and every map_*.bin file were transferred. Replacing only a subset of map files can produce a world assembled from incompatible moments. Restore the complete source folder rather than adding individual files.
The upload appears incomplete
Stop the server, compare the local and remote folder contents, and repeat the transfer with the entire folder. Large numbers of map chunks can take time to upload. Do not start the server until the transfer client reports completion.
Version and migration cautions
A hosting guide attributes a Build 41 change to character data moving into players.db, but that statement has not been verified against official patch notes. Advice posted in 2022 or 2023 may describe an older build. Before a major version change, keep the original backup, test the copied world on a non-production instance when possible, and avoid deleting any database until the new server has been validated.
A practical backup routine
- Stop the server before every copy or replacement.
- Back up the complete
Zomboid/Saves/Multiplayer/<servername>/folder. - Back up
<servername>.iniand<servername>_SandboxVars.lua. - Include
Zomboid/db/<servername>.dbwhen account, whitelist, or permission restoration matters. - Keep an untouched copy of the pre-change folder.
- Record the server name and the date of each backup.
- After restoring, verify a known character, a familiar map area, and a vehicle before allowing players back in.
The reliable pattern is simple: stop, copy or replace the complete named folder, keep the configuration names synchronized, protect the original, and test before treating the migration as complete.
