To upload an image to ChatGPT, click or tap the + beside the prompt box and choose Add photos & files. You can also drag an image into the text area or paste one copied to your clipboard. Use a PNG, JPEG or non-animated GIF that is no larger than 20 MB, then ask a specific question about it.
How to attach an image to a ChatGPT conversation
- Open the conversation where you want to use the image.
- Choose an attachment method: click or tap the + icon by the prompt field and select Add photos & files, drag the image into the text area, or paste an image copied to your clipboard.
- Select or paste the image and wait for it to appear as an attachment in the prompt.
- Ask what you want to know. For example: “What does this sign say?” or “Describe the objects on this desk.”
OpenAI documents these methods in its ChatGPT Image Inputs FAQ. Image inputs are available on Free and paid plans, but access can depend on plan limits and account settings.

Supported image types and size limits
OpenAI currently lists PNG, JPEG (.jpg or .jpeg) and non-animated GIF as supported image formats. Each image can be up to 20 MB. Animated GIFs and other image formats are not listed as supported, so convert the image to a supported still format if ChatGPT will not accept it.
There is no universal fixed number of images you can attach to one message: the number depends on image size and the text accompanying it. If a group of images will not attach, try fewer at once or reduce their file sizes. These image-specific limits are documented in OpenAI’s image-input FAQ.

Fix common image upload problems
ChatGPT will not let you select or attach the image
- Check that the file is a PNG, JPEG or non-animated GIF and is no larger than 20 MB.
- Try a different attachment method: the + menu, drag and drop, or clipboard paste.
- Attach fewer images, or make the files smaller.
“Upload limit reached” appears
This message can reflect a rolling upload-rate limit or a shared storage cap. First make sure you are signed into the intended account and check whether its plan has an applicable limit. As currently documented by OpenAI in 2026, the examples are up to 80 file uploads every 3 hours and 3 uploads per day for Free users; OpenAI says it may lower limits during peak hours. Shared storage is listed as 25 GB per user and 100 GB per organization. These account-wide file quotas can change and are not image-only allowances.
OpenAI notes that failed upload attempts can sometimes count toward the rate limit. You can review Library storage at Settings > Storage, but ChatGPT does not show how much rolling upload-rate quota remains. Check OpenAI Status for a service incident. For unresolved problems, OpenAI’s file upload guidance asks users to provide their account email, a screenshot, the time and time zone, the platform or browser, and a request ID if available.

The upload succeeds, but ChatGPT misreads the image
A successful attachment does not guarantee an accurate interpretation. OpenAI warns that unclear images can lead to less accurate answers. Small text, rotated images, non-Latin writing, graph lines distinguished mainly by color, precise spatial questions, panoramic or fisheye views, and object counting can be difficult. Images are resized before analysis, and ChatGPT does not process the original filename or metadata.

- Point to the area or detail you want examined in your prompt.
- For a chart, identify the labels or line you are asking about rather than assuming visual distinctions will be read correctly.
These steps can improve legibility but cannot guarantee a correct reading. OpenAI also says ChatGPT is not suitable for interpreting specialized medical images such as CT scans and should not be used for medical advice.

The picture is embedded in a PDF or presentation
Attaching a document is not the same as attaching its images directly. OpenAI’s current file guidance says Enterprise supports visual retrieval for PDFs; on other plans and for other document types, retrieval is text-based and extracts digital text rather than embedded images. If you need ChatGPT to interpret a picture, attach the image itself instead of relying on the document upload.

If the image meets the format and size requirements but uploads still fail, check the signed-in account, plan limits, storage and service status before repeatedly retrying. If the problem persists, follow OpenAI’s file upload troubleshooting guidance and include the details it requests so support can identify the issue.
