There is no universal best FSR 4 preset for handheld gaming—and many handheld PCs with integrated Radeon graphics are not documented as compatible with AMD’s current ML-based upscaler. First confirm that both your GPU and game are eligible. If they are, start with the highest in-game FSR quality preset that meets your chosen frame-rate target, then step down only if performance falls short.
Can a handheld run FSR 4?
Compatibility is the first setting to check. AMD now calls FSR 4’s machine-learning upscaler “FSR Upscaling.” Its current product overview lists Radeon RX 7000 and RX 9000 series graphics, while the AMD SDK specifies discrete GPUs for FSR Upscaling 4.1.1. These requirements do not establish support for typical handheld PCs using integrated Radeon graphics.

Check the device’s GPU and the game’s supported features rather than assuming an FSR option will work because the handheld has Radeon graphics or the game offers FSR 3. For current requirements, consult AMD’s FSR Technologies overview and the AMD FSR SDK. A game may still label the option “FSR 4,” despite AMD’s updated naming.
Native support and the driver upgrade route
AMD documents native game integration as one way to use FSR Upscaling. A separate AMD Software driver-upgrade route applies only to supported games with a signed FSR 3.1 DLL and DirectX 12. AMD excludes Vulkan and non-standard FSR 3.1 integrations from that upgrade path. Having an FSR 3 option in a game alone does not confirm eligibility; check AMD’s driver-upgrade compatibility details.

Upscaling is not frame generation
FSR Upscaling and FSR Frame Generation are separate features with separate requirements. The SDK lists FSR Upscaling 4.1.1 for Radeon RX 9000 and RX 7000 discrete GPUs, while FSR Frame Generation 4.0.1 requires RX 9000 or above. AMD also lists AFMF support for selected handheld configurations with Radeon 700M/800M integrated graphics, but that separate frame-generation support does not establish FSR 4 upscaling compatibility. See AMD’s HYPR-RX Profiles information for AFMF.
Which FSR 4 preset should you use?
On a compatible handheld and in a compatible game, begin with the highest-quality FSR preset that meets your own frame-rate target. If the game does not stay at that target, move down one preset and compare in the same scene. This is a practical tuning approach, not a universal benchmark result: AMD’s published material does not establish one preset as best for every handheld or game.

- Choose your priority. Decide whether you care more about image detail or meeting a particular frame-rate target. No universal handheld target is established by AMD’s cited guidance.
- Set the in-game FSR quality preset. Find FSR in the game’s graphics or video menu and start at its highest-quality option that can meet your target.
- Compare the same scene. Look at fine detail, motion ghosting, flicker, particle rendering, and frame-rate stability. Keep the scene and other settings consistent while comparing presets.
- Change one step at a time. If performance is not steady enough, lower the preset one level and repeat the comparison. Stop when the balance suits your target and visual preference.
What to expect from image quality, frame rate, and battery life
Image quality
AMD says FSR 4 improves fine detail and temporal stability, preserves particles better, and reduces ghosting on moving objects compared with FSR 3.1. Those are AMD’s product claims, not independent handheld test findings. The GPUOpen release article provides AMD’s comparison and release-era context.

A preset’s suitability depends on the game, device, GPU, resolution, power configuration, and other graphics settings. The cited AMD sources do not publish handheld frame-rate comparisons across FSR presets, so no setting here can guarantee a particular result. Battery life
The cited sources do not provide handheld battery-life measurements for FSR 4 presets. Do not assume that a particular preset will extend play time: there is no quantified handheld evidence here to support that claim.
Should you enable Radeon Super Resolution too?
No. If a game supports in-game FSR, AMD recommends leaving Radeon Super Resolution (RSR) disabled. RSR is a separate driver-based upscaler; combining it with in-game FSR can add processing work and degrade image quality. See AMD’s Radeon Super Resolution guidance.

Which compatibility details can change?
AMD’s current terminology and listed hardware support differ from the release-era description. AMD’s earlier GPUOpen article described the original FSR 4 requirements as RDNA 4, Windows, and DirectX 12. For present-day eligibility, use the newer product overview and SDK requirements rather than treating those initial requirements as current. Recheck AMD’s documentation when evaluating a device or game, since support and naming can change.
