Start by comparing Wi-Fi and wired speeds before buying equipment. If a wired connection performs well but Wi-Fi is slow in one room, improve router placement or coverage; if both are slow, check the broadband service. Wi-Fi upgrades can improve coverage and reliability, but they cannot exceed the capacity of the broadband connection entering your home.
1. Measure whether the problem is Wi-Fi or broadband
Test in the rooms where you actually use the internet, and note the results so you can compare them after each change. Run several speed tests rather than relying on one reading. If possible, connect a computer to the router with Ethernet and test again.

- Wired is healthy, but a distant room is slow: the likely issue is wireless placement, coverage, or interference.
- Wired and Wi-Fi results are both poor: restart the modem and router, then contact your internet service provider (ISP) if performance remains below what you expect.
Microsoft recommends taking a baseline in several locations and retesting after changes in its guide to Wi-Fi and your home layout. Ofcom, the UK communications regulator, also notes that Wi-Fi cannot outperform the broadband service supplying it: Get help with broadband and Wi-Fi problems.
2. Move the router to a better location
Try placement changes before spending money on new hardware. Put the router in a roughly central, elevated, open spot so its signal has fewer obstacles between it and your devices.

- Move it off the floor and out of cabinets or enclosed shelves.
- Keep it away from thick walls, metal objects, and aquariums.
- Give it space from electrical equipment that can cause interference, including microwaves and cordless devices.
Retest in the same rooms after moving it. Ofcom’s broadband and Wi-Fi advice recommends improving router position and reducing obstructions and interference.
3. Connect stationary devices with Ethernet
For a desktop PC, game console, or television that stays in one place, run an Ethernet cable from the device to the router if the route is practical. This takes Wi-Fi out of that device’s connection and can make it more stable. Ofcom says, “A wired connection is usually faster and more reliable,” referring to suitable devices that do not need to move around (Ofcom broadband and Wi-Fi help).

- Powerful Dual-Core 900MHz Processor – Handles multiple data streams simultaneously for reliable performance across your devices. Ensures smooth streaming, online gaming, and video conferencing without buffering or lag.
Ethernet does not increase the capacity of your broadband plan. It can improve the local link between a device and router; the internet speed available to that device is still limited by the broadband service.

If moving the router does not fix weak coverage across multiple rooms, a mesh Wi-Fi system may help extend coverage around the home. Mesh units work together and can be placed in different areas to reach rooms a single router struggles to serve. Ofcom describes two or three mesh boxes placed around the home as one possible approach; the right arrangement depends on the home and system.

Follow the manufacturer’s setup guidance and place units where they can maintain a useful connection to one another—not simply in the room with the weakest signal. Building materials, layout, and the way the mesh units connect affect results. Mesh can improve reach and reliability, but it cannot make the ISP’s broadband connection faster. Ofcom explains this distinction in Improving your Wi-Fi experience.

When a router upgrade may help
Consider replacing a router if it is old, frequently disconnects, or cannot support the Wi-Fi features you need. Check that a replacement is compatible with your ISP’s modem and service, and that your phones, computers, and other devices support the Wi-Fi generation or band you intend to use. A newer router cannot make an older client device use a feature it does not support.

Performance can depend on the router and connected device, distance, frequency, barriers, and interference, as described in Google’s Nest and Google Wifi troubleshooting guidance. That page concerns Google products, so treat it as an explanation of possible factors rather than a comparison of routers. For example, Microsoft notes that using 6 GHz requires both a Wi-Fi 6E router and a compatible client device (Microsoft’s home-layout guide).
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhen to contact the ISP
If a wired test is also consistently below expectations after restarting the equipment, ask your ISP to check the service and connection. A router or mesh system can address wireless limitations inside the home; it cannot fix an undersized or impaired broadband service. ISP options and consumer protections vary by country, so check the terms and support process for your location.

Keep the router secure
Speed is not the only reason to replace old equipment. If a router only supports outdated WPA or WEP security, replacement may be warranted for security even if its speed seems adequate. The FTC recommends using WPA3 Personal or WPA2 Personal, changing default administrator credentials, and keeping router firmware updated: How To Secure Your Home Wi-Fi Network.
