The manufacturer estimates the build takes around five hours and is suitable for ages 11+, with adult help for an 11-year-old. The standard kit does not include the tools needed to assemble it, and cellular calling and messaging depend on the kit’s network version and compatibility with service in your location.
What is the CircuitMess Ringo kit?
Ringo is a DIY mobile-phone kit made from electronic boards, a display, controls, a battery and case parts. You assemble the hardware, then set up and use the phone. CircuitMess presents it as an introductory STEM project: the work can teach soldering, component identification, how electronic components connect, and basics of microcontrollers and digital electronics. Its further guides cover C/C++ programming, simple games and connecting external peripherals.

That makes Ringo a better fit for someone who wants to build and explore a device than for someone seeking a dependable everyday smartphone. The official guide calls the estimated age group 11+ and says an 11-year-old should be able to assemble the kit with adult help. These are the manufacturer’s estimates, not independent assessments. The guide also cautions that Ringo is not its simplest kit and recommends soldering practice for beginners. See the Ringo build guide introduction.
How long does assembly take, and what does it involve?
CircuitMess estimates around five hours for assembly; the time can vary with experience. The process includes soldering components, connecting boards, fitting the case and completing setup. The build guide organizes the work around tools, soldering basics, component and button assembly, casing and final setup.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
This is a guided hands-on build, but not a tool-free project. If the builder has never soldered, practice first and plan for an adult to help as needed. The manufacturer’s estimate should not be treated as a promise that every builder will finish in five hours.
What is included, and what tools do you need?
The official component list includes the main board, brain board and microSD card, display and sound boards, analog joystick, network board, Li-Po battery, acrylic case pieces, micro-USB cable, microSD reader, buttons and small hardware. The microSD card is used for media, apps, games and settings. CircuitMess notes that the network board can vary by kit version, so check the particular package or listing rather than assuming every box has identical parts.

The standard kit does not include the tools required to build it. CircuitMess lists safety glasses, cutter pliers, a small screwdriver, soldering iron, stand, sponge and solder as relevant equipment; its guide says an entry-level soldering iron is sufficient. Consult the mandatory tools guide and account for tools in your preparation and project budget.

What hardware does Ringo have?
The manufacturer’s guide specifies a 1.8-inch display with 160×128-pixel resolution and 8-bit color, plus a 1300 mAh rechargeable Li-Po battery. CircuitMess estimates up to three days of use under moderate use such as games or music; this is a manufacturer estimate, not an independently tested runtime guarantee. The included micro-USB cable is used to charge the phone and upload programs and games. The microSD card stores media, apps, games and settings.

These specifications describe the kit, not the experience of a modern smartphone. The available evidence does not establish performance benchmarks or support for current smartphone apps beyond the stated storage and programming uses.
Does Ringo need a SIM card, and will it work with your carrier?
Ringo can function without a SIM, but calls and messages require a micro-SIM and a working cellular connection. CircuitMess says the network module is also required for obtaining time from the cellular network. The setup and usage information is in the setup chapter and usage guide.

The official guide identifies a SIM800C module in the 2G standard version and a SIM7600 module in the 4G version. It says the network module may depend on the version ordered and the buyer’s location. It does not provide a complete, current carrier compatibility list or establish that either version works in every country. Before buying for cellular use, confirm all of the following for your country and intended carrier:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- The exact network module in the specific kit.
- Whether the module supports the local cellular bands and network generation you need.
- Whether the carrier permits that device and SIM on its service.
- Whether the relevant cellular service is available where you plan to use the phone.
Historical community discussions document location- and carrier-specific questions, but they are not a current compatibility guarantee: see Model Network Card, Will the Ringo work for me in the USA? and No 4G connection in USA. The SIM7600 product family information from its manufacturer is available on the SIM7600 Series page, but module-family information alone does not confirm compatibility for a particular Ringo, carrier or location.

Are the 2G and 4G versions interchangeable?
Do not assume that the 2G and 4G versions are interchangeable or that a buyer can upgrade one by swapping only the network module. CircuitMess identifies different module families, and historical community discussion reports that the main board differs between versions. A 2023 community exchange also said a particular 4G module was no longer manufactured at that time; that dated report does not establish current replacement availability. Confirm the exact hardware and ask CircuitMess about present-day replacement support before attempting an upgrade.
Quick Recap
What should you check before buying?
- Project fit: Choose Ringo for a guided build-and-code experience, not as a substitute for a ready-made everyday smartphone.
- Builder readiness: Consider the soldering work, the manufacturer’s age guidance and whether an adult can assist.
- Tools: The standard kit omits assembly tools, so check what you already own and what you need to obtain.
- Kit version: Verify the included network board and other package details on the exact listing; contents may vary.
- Cellular use: Confirm module, local network support, carrier policy and service availability before purchase if calls or texts matter.
- Availability: The CircuitMess homepage currently features other STEM products and a MAKERphone 2.0 Kickstarter campaign, but that does not establish current Ringo retail stock. Check a live listing for seller, availability, price and version rather than assuming these details.
