You do not need to explain a gap on your résumé or announce your layoff publicly. Decide separately how visible you want your job search to be on LinkedIn.
Start with accurate dates and a clear target
Before editing either profile, confirm your last day, official job title, employer name, and the accomplishments you can substantiate. Choose one or two target roles so you can tailor your materials to relevant opportunities rather than treating them as a complete career archive.

Use consistent titles and dates on your résumé and LinkedIn. CareerOneStop recommends emphasizing experience relevant to your job goal and making the work history consistent with your LinkedIn profile. See CareerOneStop’s work-experience guidance.
Use only information and work samples you are permitted to share. Do not take or disclose proprietary employer documents to support a résumé claim.

Refresh your résumé for the roles you want
Lead with relevant evidence
Rework the summary and experience bullets around the target job. Put the most relevant responsibilities and accomplishments where a reader can find them quickly. CareerOneStop recommends using specific context, outcomes, and accomplishments, as well as language from the job posting when it accurately describes your qualifications.
- Describe what you did, the scope of the work, and the result where you can support it.
- Use figures only when they are verified and appropriate to disclose; do not estimate or invent metrics.
- Include job-posting terms for skills and experience you genuinely have, not as unsupported keyword stuffing.
Choose a format that makes your experience clear
A chronological résumé foregrounds work history. A combination format can bring transferable skills forward while retaining detailed job history. A functional format emphasizes skills rather than a conventional work timeline, but CareerOneStop warns that some employers may misinterpret it or applicant-tracking systems may reject it. These are practical considerations, not guarantees about how a particular employer screens applications. More guidance is available from CareerOneStop’s résumé-formatting page.
Keep the layout simple and readable. Complex columns and graphics can be scrambled by automated systems, so do not rely on them to convey essential information. CareerOneStop also offers special résumé tips.
Handle the employment gap honestly
End the former role on the correct date. You do not have to add an explanation for a gap to the résumé, according to CareerOneStop. If context would help, you can address it in a cover letter or interview. Do not imply you are still employed or add consulting, projects, or results that did not happen.

Bring LinkedIn into line with your résumé
Update the former position’s end date and check that its title, dates, achievements, and skills agree with your résumé. Then revise your headline and About section to describe your professional strengths and the work you can take on next. State your direction positively and specifically; there is no need to make the layoff the focus of your profile.
Refresh relevant skills and personalize your LinkedIn profile URL. The U.S. Department of Labor’s Employment Workshop Participant Guide, version 6.0 Update 1, recommends personalizing the URL and adding it to your résumé.
Rank #4
LinkedIn’s own Job Search Guide reports that members with a profile photo had 21 times more profile views and up to nine times more connection requests, and members with five or more listed skills had 27 times more contacts from employers and other members. These are LinkedIn-published figures; the guide’s publication year is not stated, and the figures are not independently validated or a promise of individual results.
Set Open to Work visibility deliberately
LinkedIn’s Open to Work settings offer three visibility choices. The names and interface may change, so check LinkedIn’s current Open to Work help page before changing your settings.
Best Value
| Setting | What it means | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| All LinkedIn Members | Your Open to Work status is visible to members, including people at your current company; LinkedIn adds the Open to Work photo frame. | Broad visibility, but the job search is public to your LinkedIn audience. |
| Recruiters only | Your shared career interests are intended for recruiters using LinkedIn Recruiter. | Narrower intended visibility, not a privacy guarantee. LinkedIn says it takes steps to prevent recruiters at your current company from seeing the information but cannot guarantee complete privacy. |
| Visible only to you | Your job-search preferences are not shared with other members. | Private, but does not signal your availability to recruiters or your network. |
If you enable Open to Work, set job titles, locations, work arrangement, start date, and employment types to match your real preferences. LinkedIn says: “To protect your privacy, we take steps to prevent LinkedIn Recruiter users who work at your current company from seeing your shared career interests, but we can’t guarantee complete privacy.”
A public post about the layoff is optional. Update your profile and preferences according to your comfort, network, and circumstances; a public announcement is not required.
Keep job-search updates separate from benefit questions
Updating a résumé or LinkedIn profile does not determine unemployment-benefit eligibility. In the United States, eligibility and work-search requirements depend on state law and other qualifications. The U.S. Department of Labor says workers unemployed through no fault of their own, as determined under state law, may qualify if they meet other eligibility requirements. Check your state unemployment agency for the rules that apply to you. Some people may also have health-plan continuation rights after termination; see the Department of Labor’s termination and health care benefits information and your benefits documents.
