Make the lineup decision in this order
- Verify that he is inactive. Check the NFL team announcement and your fantasy app near kickoff. NFL teams typically designate inactives about 90 minutes before a game; treat that as a useful check-in time, not a guaranteed update time. - Check the lineup lock for the replacement. Find out whether your league locks a player when his own NFL game starts or uses a different deadline. NFL.com Fantasy’s rules describe active/reserve changes before that player’s team is scheduled to start, but settings vary by league. NFL Fantasy’s 2024 official rules and NFL.com Fantasy’s league-settings guide explain the platform’s rules and configurable settings.
- Start a healthy quarterback you already roster. Confirm he is eligible for the quarterback slot and that his game has not started. Make and save the change before the applicable lock.
- If you need to add a quarterback, check availability and timing. An available free agent may be addable immediately if your league permits it. A waiver claim is different: ESPN supports standard waivers, FAB variants and leagues without waivers. In ESPN standard leagues, claims are processed after the waiver period expires, usually between 3 a.m. and 5 a.m. ET, so a claim is not a reliable fix for a game about to begin. ESPN’s waivers guide outlines the options; NFL.com also notes that free agents may be subject to waivers in its official rules.
- Check that the move actually took effect. Review the saved lineup and transaction status in your app. Do not assume a pending waiver claim has added the player or that another platform follows ESPN’s or NFL.com Fantasy’s rules.
How to choose between available quarterbacks
First narrow the options to players you can actually start: they must be available, eligible for your slot and not locked by their game’s start. Then check current team news and your league’s scoring settings to judge each player’s expected role and fit. The sources here establish roster and transaction mechanics, not a current ranking or projection for particular quarterbacks, so there is no universal replacement pick.

- Already rostered: Usually the simplest move when an eligible quarterback has not locked.
- Free agent: May be usable quickly, depending on your league’s rules and transaction limits.
- Waiver claim: Only helps if it processes before you need the player; timing depends on the waiver system.
Can automatic substitution handle it?
NFL.com Fantasy offers Auto-Swap Inactives. It must be enabled, and its documented behavior is limited: it swaps an inactive starter only when that player is projected to score zero, then uses the highest-ranked player on your Backups list. If the starter or replacement is already locked
Check your platform’s lineup status and the league constitution. The NFL.com Fantasy rules and settings documentation describe deadlines and configurable locks, but do not establish a general post-kickoff exception or universal commissioner override. Do not count on a change after a game starts unless your league’s own rules explicitly allow it.

Check your league’s rules before the next game day

NFL.com Fantasy exposes settings for waiver type, free-agent lock and roster lock, while ESPN describes multiple waiver formats. Look up the settings for your specific league, including when free agents lock and when claims process.
