Most supported Vizio TVs update firmware over the internet automatically. To check manually, newer VIZIO OS and SmartCast models usually use Menu → All Settings → Admin & Privacy → Check for Updates; many older models use Menu → System → Check for Updates. Labels vary by model and software generation.
What Vizio TV firmware does
Firmware is the software that runs your television’s menus, streaming platform, network connection, casting, picture and audio controls, and compatibility with connected devices. An update can add or change features, fix bugs, improve compatibility or security, or alter platform behavior. It does not guarantee better picture quality or faster performance on every model.
Use the TV’s built-in updater whenever possible. Do not install unofficial files simply because a newer version exists.
Before you update
- Find the exact model number on the rear label, original box, purchase record, or the TV’s system-information screen. Screen size alone is not enough; two 55-inch sets can use different firmware.
- Connect the TV to reliable Wi-Fi or Ethernet for an online update.
- Use the original or a compatible Vizio remote.
- Keep the TV connected to power. Do not unplug it while downloading or installing.
- Expect the TV to restart. An update is not the same as a factory reset.
- Do not begin during an unstable internet or power connection.
Check the installed firmware version
Record or photograph the current version before starting. This makes it easier to confirm success and gives Vizio support useful information.

- On newer models, open Menu → All Settings → Admin & Privacy → System Information.
- On other models, try Menu → System → System Information.
- Some older sets use Menu → Help → System Info.
The value may be called Firmware Version, Software Version, System Version, or SW Version. Menu names are model-dependent. Vizio manuals document these variations in the V-Series manual and older documentation.
Update a newer Vizio TV online
This path is documented for several recent V-Series, M-Series Quantum X, D-Series, and related models.
- Turn on the TV and press Menu on the Vizio remote.
- Open All Settings, if shown.
- Select Admin & Privacy.
- Select Check for Updates.
- Confirm the check if prompted.
- If an update is available, approve the download and installation.
- Leave the TV powered and connected until the process finishes and the TV restarts.
- Return to System Information and verify the version.
The same administrative path appears in Vizio’s V-Series manual and M-Series Quantum X manual.

Update an older Vizio SmartCast TV online
- Press Menu.
- Select System.
- Select Check for Updates.
- Confirm and install the update if one is offered.
- If Vizio requests it, use System → Reboot TV, or the equivalent Restart TV or Soft Power Cycle option.
- Check the system-information screen after the restart.

Many supported internet-connected Vizio TVs download firmware in the background when Vizio makes it available. Accept an on-screen installation prompt and allow the television to restart fully. Rollouts can be staged by model, region, and software branch, so two Vizio TVs may not receive the same update simultaneously. The 2025 Google Cast rollout is one documented example of background delivery.
Can you update a Vizio TV with USB?
Only when Vizio provides a USB procedure for the exact model and hardware revision. USB updating is not a universal feature on current Vizio televisions.

- Use Vizio’s model-specific file and instructions, never a forum download or firmware for a similar-looking set.
- Follow the required filename, folder structure, USB format, and power sequence exactly.
- Do not remove the drive or interrupt power during installation.
- Verify the installed version after restarting.
Legacy example: VM230XVT
An older Vizio VM230XVT instruction sheet requires a FAT32 drive containing only a file named fswu.img; its procedure includes disconnecting and reconnecting power and reports an approximately two-minute installation. Those details apply only to that cited legacy series, not to Vizio TVs generally: VM230XVT USB instructions.
When no update is available
If the TV says “The TV is up-to-date,” no installation is needed. “No update found” can also mean the rollout has not reached your model, the set uses a different software branch, required data was already downloaded, or the problem is caused by an app, network, HDMI device, or account rather than firmware.
If Check for Updates is missing, do not guess. The model may use another menu, may not be a SmartCast/VIZIO OS set, may be offline, or may receive updates automatically. Search Vizio by model or serial number through the firmware information page or Vizio Support search.

If the update fails
- Wait several minutes if the TV still appears to be processing.
- Do not repeatedly unplug it during installation.
- Check internet access on another device and restart the home router.
- Reconnect the TV to Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
- Perform a normal TV reboot or model-specific soft power cycle.
- Try Check for Updates again.
- Record the exact error, any support code, model number, serial number, and current firmware version.
- Contact Vizio support with those details. Newer models expose Support Code in the administrative menu.
A factory reset should not be the first response. It erases network, picture, audio, app, and other settings, requires setup again, and does not install firmware or guarantee recovery.
If the TV is stuck after updating
A restart, temporarily blank screen, or delayed app loading can occur while completion finishes. If the TV remains unresponsive for an unusually long period, note what is displayed before attempting a power cycle. Use only recovery steps for your exact model. Escalate to Vizio if the set will not boot, repeatedly restarts, shows a persistent error, or stops recognizing inputs. Do not apply a universal timed-unplug procedure unless the model’s manual specifies one.
Update, reboot, and factory reset are different

Will updating erase my settings?
A normal firmware update is separate from a factory reset and normally preserves settings, although the TV may restart.
Can I update without Wi-Fi?
Use Ethernet if your TV supports it. Otherwise, an internet update requires a working network; USB is available only where Vizio publishes exact model-specific instructions.
Can I downgrade Vizio firmware?
Do not attempt a downgrade with unofficial files. Use only firmware and recovery instructions Vizio provides for the exact model.
