The Boeing 747-8: The 76.3-Metre Passenger Aircraft That Still Leads for Length

The Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental (747-8I) stretches approximately 76.3 metres (250 feet 2 inches) from nose to tail. That makes it the longest passenger aircraft in established airline service as of 18 August 2026. There is an important qualification: Boeing’s 777-9 is slightly longer at 76.7 metres, but it remained in certification and had not yet entered passenger service; Boeing was targeting first delivery in 2027.

The 747-8 is therefore still the practical answer to “what is the longest passenger aircraft flying today?” The 777-9 is the longer design waiting to take that title in commercial operation.

Which aircraft is the 76-metre “King of the Skies”?

The subject is the Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental, commonly abbreviated 747-8I. It is the passenger version of Boeing’s final 747 generation. The related 747-8 Freighter is a cargo aircraft; “747-8” on its own can refer to either version.

Boeing developed the Intercontinental for roughly the 400- to 500-seat market, with the exact total determined by the airline’s cabin layout. Its distinctive raised upper deck preserves the hump-backed profile that made the 747 recognizable worldwide.

“Queen of the Skies” is the established nickname for the 747. “King of the Skies” is better understood as a dramatic headline description, not an official universal name.

The 747-8 by the numbers

Specification Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental
Length Approximately 76.3 m (250 ft 2 in)
Wingspan Approximately 68.4 m (224 ft 7 in)
Height Approximately 19.4 m (63 ft 8 in)
Typical two-class capacity About 400–500 passengers, configuration-dependent
Engines Four General Electric GEnx-2B turbofans

These figures come from Boeing’s historical product information and airport-planning documentation; small differences can result from rounding, variant definitions and measurement conventions. Boeing’s 747 product history and 747-8 airport-planning document provide the technical references.

Why did Boeing make the 747 so long?

More usable cabin

Stretching the fuselage creates additional rows of seats without changing the basic 747 concept. The 747-8 is about 5.6 metres longer than the 747-400, giving airlines more cabin length and room for galleys, lavatories, crew areas and premium seating.

Passenger and cargo flexibility

A long-deck aircraft can carry many passengers while retaining substantial lower-deck cargo space. That combination was central to the 747’s commercial appeal: it could move people and freight on the same flight.

Updated aerodynamics and engines

The 747-8 added raked wingtips and technologies associated with Boeing’s 787 programme, including GEnx engines. Boeing described the result as quieter and more fuel-efficient than earlier 747 versions. Those improvements do not mean that length alone makes an aircraft economical; fuel burn also depends on engines, aerodynamics, seating density, payload, route length and load factors.

What is it like inside?

The 747-8 has two passenger decks over part of the fuselage. The upper deck gives passengers a distinctive, more private environment, while the main deck accommodates most of the cabin. However, the aircraft’s exterior length does not guarantee extra legroom. Seat pitch, seat width, class mix, lavatory placement and galley design are chosen by each airline.

A premium-heavy 747-8 can feel very different from a high-density layout. Newer twin-engine aircraft may also offer lower cabin altitude, higher humidity, larger windows or quieter interiors, depending on the model and airline. The 747-8’s attraction is its architecture, history and upper-deck experience—not a universal promise of greater comfort.

Is the 747-8 really the longest passenger aircraft?

The answer depends on the definition of “longest.” The following comparison uses length and the operational status known on 18 August 2026.

Aircraft Length Status on 18 August 2026
Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental 76.3 m Longest passenger aircraft in established airline service by length
Boeing 777-9 76.7 m Longer design; certification underway and first delivery planned for 2027
Airbus A340-600 Approximately 75.4 m Older passenger aircraft type in service
Boeing 777-300ER Approximately 73.9 m Passenger aircraft in service
Airbus A380-800 Approximately 72.7 m Passenger aircraft in service

Boeing called the 747-8 the longest commercial aircraft in service when the final aircraft left production in 2022. Its announcement is available at Boeing’s final-747 release. The precise current claim is narrower: the 747-8I remains the longest passenger aircraft operating in established airline service, while the 777-9 is longer on paper.

747-8 versus Airbus A380: longest is not largest

Metric Boeing 747-8 Airbus A380-800
Length Approximately 76.3 m Approximately 72.7 m
Wingspan Approximately 68.4 m Approximately 79.8 m
Height Approximately 19.4 m Approximately 24.1 m
Deck arrangement Partial upper deck Full-length double deck
Passenger capacity Typically fewer than a densely configured A380 Higher potential capacity and cabin volume

The 747-8 wins the length comparison by roughly 3.6 metres. The A380 is wider, taller and has two full passenger decks, so it generally offers more cabin volume and higher maximum capacity. Calling the A380 the “biggest” passenger aircraft is therefore reasonable when the metric is wingspan, height, cabin volume or capacity—but not fuselage length.

747-8 versus Boeing 777-9

Feature 747-8I 777-9
Length 76.3 m 76.7 m
Engines Four GEnx engines Two GE9X engines
Typical two-class seating About 400–500, airline-dependent Boeing lists 375–450
Wingspan About 68.4 m 71.8 m extended; about 64.8 m with tips folded
Commercial status Established aircraft type Certification underway; first delivery planned for 2027

The 777-9 is only about 0.4 metres longer—roughly the length of a large suitcase or a person lying down. That difference matters for a record, but it is barely perceptible beside an aircraft at an airport. The 777-9’s folding wingtips let it use a 71.8-metre span in flight while reducing its ground footprint to approximately 64.8 metres. Boeing lists its specifications on the 777X programme page and its folding-tip arrangement in this airport-planning brochure.

Boeing said certification testing was still progressing in July 2026 and that first delivery was planned for 2027. Those dates are programme targets, not a guarantee of an operating passenger service. See Boeing’s certification update and July 2026 programme statement.

Why did Boeing stop building passenger 747s?

Modern twin-engine wide-bodies changed the economics of long-haul flying. They generally use less fuel than comparable four-engine aircraft and allow airlines to serve more city pairs at higher frequency instead of concentrating demand into a very large aircraft.

The 747-8 and Airbus A380 entered the market as airlines were increasingly choosing efficient twins such as the 777 and later the 787 and A350. Passenger demand for jumbo jets declined, although the 747 remained valuable as a freighter. Boeing’s 747 programme produced 1,574 aircraft over approximately 54 years. The final 747 left the Everett factory in December 2022 and was delivered as a freighter in early 2023.

Production ending did not ground the fleet. Passenger 747-8s and many 747 freighters continue to operate, while preserved aircraft remain important parts of aviation museums and airport collections.

What the record actually means

  • Longest passenger aircraft currently in established airline service: Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental, at approximately 76.3 metres.
  • Longest passenger aircraft design listed for future commercial service: Boeing 777-9, at 76.7 metres.
  • Largest passenger aircraft by common “biggest” measures: Airbus A380, when the measure is wingspan, height, cabin volume or maximum capacity.
  • Longest does not mean most comfortable: Airline configuration determines the passenger experience.

The 747-8 still owns the operational length crown by a narrow margin, but the crown is provisional. Once the 777-9 is certified, delivered and operating passenger flights, it is expected to become the longest commercial passenger aircraft by published fuselage length.
