The safest way to update tvOS is to open Settings > System > Software Updates > Update Software, choose Download and Install when an update is offered, and leave Apple TV connected to both power and the network until it finishes. The box restarts during preparation and installation, then restarts again when complete.
You can enable automatic updates from the same Software Updates screen. If an update appears stuck, the correct response depends on the wording and graphics on screen: Apple gives different instructions for Preparing Update, Applying Update, and an Apple-logo progress bar with no text.

What you need before updating tvOS
Apple TV updates are installed on the device itself. You do not need to download a firmware file to a computer, find a current release number, or connect a phone. The update screen checks what is available for your particular Apple TV and presents the appropriate package.
- Power: Keep the Apple TV plugged into its normal power source for the entire process.
- Network: Connect through Wi-Fi or Ethernet before opening the update screen. A wired connection is available only on models with an Ethernet port.
- Time to leave it alone: The official instructions do not promise a normal installation duration. Plan not to use the Apple TV until its final restart has finished.
- Remote: Have the Siri Remote available so you can select the update and respond if an error screen appears.
Before starting, pause any activity that depends on the television and make sure nobody is likely to disconnect the Apple TV while it is working. A slowly flashing status light can occur during the process, and restarts are expected. Do not treat a temporary loss of the picture during a restart as proof that the installation failed.

Apple’s support instructions are the authority for the current on-screen wording and controls: Update your Apple TV and the Apple TV user guide’s Update Apple TV 4K software page. Interface labels and model capabilities can change, so follow the labels shown on your television rather than an old screenshot.
Choose automatic or manual updates
Both methods use the same software-update area. Automatic updating removes the need to check periodically; manual updating lets you decide when a download and restart should occur.

Automatic updating is a setting, not a requirement. You can leave it off and use the manual check whenever you prefer. Whichever choice you make, an installation still needs stable power and a network connection. Automatic updating is most convenient when Apple TV normally remains plugged in and connected to a reliable network; it is not a substitute for fixing a weak Wi-Fi connection or an error message.

How to update tvOS manually
- Open Settings. From the Apple TV Home Screen, select the Settings app.
- Open System. In Settings, choose System.
- Open Software Updates. Select Software Updates, then choose Update Software.
- Start the offered update. If the screen reports an available update, select Download and Install. If no update is offered, Apple TV is not presenting one for that device at that moment.
- Leave every connection in place. Do not remove the power cable or deliberately disconnect Wi-Fi or Ethernet while the update downloads, prepares, and installs.
- Wait through the restarts. Apple TV downloads the software, restarts, prepares it, installs it, and restarts again after completion. A slowly flashing status light can be normal during the process.
- Return to the update screen only after the final restart. Once the Home Screen is available again, you can check Settings > System > Software Updates to confirm that no further update is being offered.
Apple specifically advises not disconnecting Apple TV 4K while an update is in progress. The process is designed to include restarts; a blank screen or a temporary loss of the picture during those restarts is not, by itself, evidence of failure. Avoid repeatedly pressing buttons or removing power simply because the display changes during a restart.
Turn on automatic tvOS updates
- Open Settings on Apple TV.
- Choose System.
- Select Software Updates.
- Turn on Automatically Update.
The exact switch is on the same Software Updates screen used for a manual check. Automatic updates are useful when the Apple TV is normally left connected to power and a reliable network. They do not remove the need to troubleshoot a weak connection or an update that reports an error. If you prefer to control when the television may restart, leave automatic updating off and use the manual path.
What to do when an update looks stuck
Do not use one blanket remedy for every frozen-looking screen. First read the text and identify whether the Apple logo is present. Apple’s one-hour guidance is a troubleshooting threshold, not a prediction of how long a normal installation should take.

A restart interrupts the update workflow, so use it only when the on-screen condition calls for it. Reset All Settings and Restore are recovery measures, not ordinary maintenance. Read each confirmation screen carefully because a reset or restore can require you to set up the device again. If you are unsure which screen you are seeing, record its exact wording before taking action; the distinction between text under the bar and an Apple logo alone changes the recommended next step.
If the update option is unavailable
When Apple TV cannot offer an update, start with connectivity rather than resetting the device.
- Confirm that Apple TV is connected to Wi-Fi or Ethernet in its network settings.
- Check that the router is connected to the modem and that both devices have power.
- If the wireless network is not joining correctly, forget the current network and join it again, entering the Wi-Fi password when prompted.
- Return to Settings > System > Software Updates > Update Software after the connection is working.
An unavailable update does not establish that Apple TV is permanently unsupported. The device may simply have no update to present at that moment, or it may not have a working network path to Apple’s update service. Check the connection first, then run the manual check again instead of repeatedly selecting an unavailable control.
Fix Wi-Fi and network problems that make Apple TV unreliable
Many apparent tvOS problems are connection problems: streaming pauses, the update screen cannot check for software, or an automatic update never starts. Work through the physical network and then the Apple TV settings in a predictable order.
Check the router, modem, and placement
- Verify that the router’s internet connection runs through the modem and that both units are powered.
- When possible, keep Apple TV and the Wi-Fi router in the same room.
- Do not put Apple TV directly on or within 30 centimetres of the router.
- Move obstructions out of the wireless path, with particular attention to metal surfaces that can interfere with the signal.
These placement recommendations come from Apple’s If your Apple TV can’t connect to Wi-Fi troubleshooting guide. They are practical signal checks, not a guarantee that every wireless environment will perform identically. A nearby router can still perform poorly if it is blocked by metal or if the modem or router has lost its connection.

Restart Apple TV, then restart the network equipment
- On Apple TV, open Settings > System > Restart and confirm the restart.
- After Apple TV is available again, disconnect power from the router and modem.
- Wait briefly, restore power to the modem and router, and allow them to finish starting up.
- Check Apple TV’s network connection and retry the software update.
Restarting is different from resetting all settings: it reloads the running system without being a routine data-erasing recovery step. Use the restart path above for ordinary connection trouble. Restart the network equipment only after noting which device is the modem and which is the router, so both can be returned to service in the correct order.
Use Ethernet as a controlled test when the model supports it
A direct Ethernet connection can help determine whether Wi-Fi is the source of the trouble. Connect the Apple TV to the router with an Ethernet cable, then retry the network check or update. Ethernet is a troubleshooting option, not a requirement for installing tvOS.
Check the physical model before buying or routing a cable. Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) Wi-Fi has no Ethernet port, so an Ethernet cable cannot be connected to that edition. Apple documents this model distinction in Set up Apple TV 4K. Do not assume that every Apple TV 4K has the same ports. If the model has no Ethernet jack, continue with Wi-Fi checks rather than forcing an adapter or treating the absence of a wired option as a fault.
Check the HDMI connection when the picture is wrong after an update
An update can coincide with a display or cable issue, especially when a television is being set up for 4K HDR. Apple’s setup guide says an HDMI cable is required to connect Apple TV 4K to a television and that a compatible Ultra High Speed HDMI cable is needed for a 4K HDR television.
- Use an HDMI cable appropriate for the capabilities of the television and Apple TV 4K.
- For a 4K HDR setup, verify that the cable is specified as compatible with 4K HDR rather than assuming any older HDMI cable will provide the same result.
- Reseat the cable at both ends if the television reports no signal after a restart.
- Check that the television is on the HDMI input where Apple TV is connected.
This is a connection requirement for the display, not a replacement for network troubleshooting. A better HDMI cable will not fix an Apple TV that cannot reach Wi-Fi, and an Ethernet cable will not correct a missing or incompatible HDMI connection. If the Home Screen returns but the image is missing, diagnose the HDMI path separately from the software-update path.
Verify the result without interrupting recovery
Let the final restart finish before deciding whether the update worked. Once the Home Screen is available, open Settings > System > Software Updates and run the check again if you need confirmation. If no update is offered, the device is not presenting another package at that time. Avoid starting a second update check while the box is still showing an installation screen or while its status light indicates that the process is continuing.

If the television shows no picture immediately after a restart, check the selected HDMI input and cable seating before assuming the update failed. If network access is the concern, verify Wi-Fi or Ethernet separately. Keeping these symptoms separate prevents an HDMI change from being mistaken for a failed download or a network restart from being mistaken for a tvOS reset.
A practical maintenance routine for smoother operation
There is no need to reset Apple TV on a schedule. A small routine addresses the issues Apple’s support steps actually identify.
- Keep the network usable. Confirm router and modem power and keep the Apple TV in a sensible position relative to the router.
- Choose an update policy. Turn on Automatically Update if you prefer unattended maintenance; otherwise check manually from Settings > System > Software Updates.
- Restart for ordinary glitches. Use Settings > System > Restart before considering a settings reset.
- Rejoin Wi-Fi when credentials or association are wrong. Forget the current network and join it again instead of repeatedly retrying a bad saved connection.
- Use the correct cable for the job. Ethernet is limited by the model’s ports; 4K HDR viewing calls for a compatible Ultra High Speed HDMI cable.
- Read the update screen before intervening. The wording determines whether to wait, contact Apple Support, or reconnect power after the one-hour condition Apple specifies.
This approach separates low-risk maintenance from recovery actions. Restarting a network or rejoining Wi-Fi is an appropriate first response to connectivity trouble; Reset All Settings and Restore belong later, when Apple’s error path directs you to them. The goal is not to reset more often, but to match each symptom with the narrowest appropriate action.

When to contact Apple Support
Contact Apple Support rather than guessing when a Preparing Update or Applying Update screen has remained for more than an hour, before you restart or unplug. Also contact support if the Apple-logo, no-text recovery restart does not resolve the update, or if the error sequence reaches Restore and the problem persists. Have the exact screen wording, the Apple TV model, and the connection type (Wi-Fi or Ethernet) ready; those details determine which troubleshooting branch applies.
Support is also the safer next step when the device repeatedly fails after a correctly completed restart, a working network connection, and the model-appropriate cable checks. Do not improvise with a power interruption while Apple’s instructions tell you to wait. The one-hour rule applies to the specific stuck screens described above; it is not a reason to unplug every update that appears slow.

Should I use automatic or manual updates?
Automatic updates are convenient when Apple TV normally stays powered and connected. Manual updates are better when you want to choose when downloading and restarting occur. Both settings are on Settings > System > Software Updates.
How long should an Apple TV update take?
Apple’s instructions do not promise a normal installation duration. Leave the device alone through its downloads and restarts. If Preparing Update or Applying Update has lasted more than an hour, contact Apple Support before unplugging.
