Updating a baseline changes what the test accepts; it does not prove the new UI is correct.
Update only the baselines you mean to change
- Identify the intended UI change. Pinpoint the component and visual test expected to change. Do not regenerate references merely to make unexplained failures disappear.
- Use the baseline rendering environment. Run in the same operating system, browser version, settings, and headless mode used to create the references. Playwright notes that OS, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode can affect rendering. See Playwright’s visual comparisons guide.
- Scope the run where practical. Select the affected test or project rather than refreshing every reference. Playwright documents
npx playwright test --update-snapshots; check the CLI documentation matching your installed version for supported modes and defaults: Playwright CLI reference. - Inspect the results. Review each changed image and its expected, actual, and diff views. The Trace Viewer documentation describes these views for investigating visual failures.
- Review and commit with the code change. Keep snapshots in version control, and have reviewers connect each altered image to the intended UI change before accepting it.
What the update command changes
Playwright generates snapshots on a test’s first run and uses them as expected references for later comparisons. The documented command to update screenshot references is npx playwright test --update-snapshots. Once updated, the new image becomes the comparison target; any unintended appearance present in it may no longer fail that test.

CLI update modes and defaults are version-sensitive. The current CLI documentation lists changed, missing, all, and none modes; it describes a run without the flag as defaulting to missing, and the flag without a mode as defaulting to changed. It also documents patch, 3way, and overwrite source update methods. Confirm the behavior against the documentation for the version installed in your project before relying on a mode or default. Prefer the narrowest appropriate update and inspect what it changed.
Keep rendering conditions consistent
A screenshot comparison can fail even when application behavior has not changed: rendering may differ across operating systems, browser versions, settings, hardware, power sources, and headless versus headed execution. Fonts and platform rendering can also matter. Playwright recommends running tests in the environment where the baseline was generated.

Record which browser project and operating-system environment create your references, and use that environment for intentional updates. If the team deliberately changes that environment, treat the resulting image changes as a migration to review, not as routine snapshot maintenance. With multiple projects, Playwright notes that project names may be used in snapshot names in place of a browser name.
Use tolerances and filters deliberately
Playwright supports maxDiffPixels to allow a specified number of differing pixels. It also supports stylePath to apply a stylesheet during screenshot capture, which can filter volatile elements. Both affect what the comparison detects.

- Set a tolerance only when the allowed variation is understood and harmless; no universally safe pixel threshold is established in the documentation.
- Use a filtering stylesheet only for content whose volatility is understood. Hiding a changing element also means its visual changes will not be assessed by that screenshot comparison.
- Keep the rationale for any tolerance or filter in the project’s test policy so reviewers can judge whether it weakens coverage.
Review evidence before accepting a new reference
For each changed snapshot, compare the expected image, actual image, and diff. Ask whether the location and scale of the visual change match the product change. A new baseline is still only an image; the comparison tools do not decide whether the change is intended.

- Investigate unexpected shifts, missing content, or broad changes before accepting the file.
- Review snapshot diffs alongside code diffs, and commit the references with the change they represent.
Common problems and fixes
The update creates many unrelated changes
The run may have been too broad, or tests may be running under a different rendering environment. Restrict the run to the affected test or project, restore unrelated references, and rerun in the baseline environment.

A screenshot differs locally but passes in CI, or the reverse
Compare the operating system, browser version, project settings, and headed or headless execution in both environments. Align the reference update with the environment used for comparison rather than accepting a local-only image by default.
The test passes after updating, but the UI still looks wrong
That is possible because the update replaces the expected image. Inspect the actual screenshot and diff against the previous expected reference, then correct the UI or reject the baseline change if it does not match the intended result.

The CLI mode behaves differently than expected
Update behavior varies by Playwright version. Check the CLI reference for the version in the lockfile or installed dependency, then choose an explicit supported mode if needed.
Small fluctuations keep causing failures
First identify their source and whether they are harmless. If appropriate, consider maxDiffPixels or a stylePath stylesheet, but do not choose a threshold simply to suppress failures; document what variation is being allowed.
