You can run a continuous YouTube music stream from Linux Mint with OBS Studio or FFmpeg: prepare local, properly licensed audio, create a YouTube live event, send its stream key from your encoder, and keep the computer and internet connection running. Neither setup guarantees uninterrupted uptime. You also need to plan for recovery, copyright checks, and YouTube’s archive limit before leaving a stream on overnight.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. The channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time live enablement may take up to 24 hours. See YouTube’s live streaming requirements.
- A Linux Mint computer, a stable internet connection with sufficient upload capacity, and an encoder: OBS Studio for a graphical workflow or FFmpeg for a command-line workflow.
- Local music files you own or are licensed to stream on YouTube, plus a still image or looping visual if you want video on screen.
- A plan for power, sleep settings, monitoring and what to do if the encoder or connection stops.
Keep the music files on the computer rather than depending on a browser tab or another online stream. Save the relevant licenses and confirm they cover YouTube livestreaming, the territories where the stream will be available, and any recording or archive you intend to keep. OBS is free and open source, and YouTube lists it in its encoder directory. Install it from a trusted distribution channel compatible with your particular Linux Mint release. Package availability and installation steps can vary; check the software source for your edition instead of assuming one command works on every Mint system.

Create the YouTube event and connect the encoder
- In YouTube Studio, open Go Live and create or schedule a livestream.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key from the event’s stream settings. Treat the key like a password: do not share it, include it in screenshots, or expose it in public configuration or logs.
- In OBS, configure YouTube as the streaming destination and enter the event’s stream key. For FFmpeg, configure the stream URL and key in your local command or protected configuration; do not publish a real key in a script or example.
- Start sending the stream from the encoder and wait for YouTube’s incoming preview. Confirm that both audio and video are present before making the event public or announcing it.
If this is your channel’s first livestream, YouTube says activation can take up to 24 hours. Allow time for that before planning a launch.
Set a conservative stream quality and test it
YouTube supports RTMP or RTMPS ingest and recommends RTMPS. Its encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265 and AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Use settings your Mint computer and upload connection can sustain; a higher resolution or bitrate is not automatically better for a static radio visual.

A sensible starting point for a music-and-image stream
For a modest static visual, 720p at 30 fps is a practical test target. YouTube’s H.264 guidance lists 3 Mbps as the minimum and 8 Mbps as the recommended bitrate for 720p30. These are encoder recommendations, not a guarantee that your particular connection can maintain the stream. Check upload performance, leave headroom for normal network variation, and test with the actual audio and visual motion you plan to use.
- Use RTMPS when available, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval.
- Confirm the selected audio codec is AAC or MP3 and that YouTube’s preview contains sound.
- Watch the encoder’s connection or stream-health indicators during a representative test, not just at startup.
- If OBS shows rising dropped frames or a yellow/red connection state, the connection may be unstable or unable to sustain the selected bitrate. Reduce bitrate or investigate the network route rather than assuming the computer needs a faster CPU.
Make the stream capable of running overnight
A 24/7 stream is an operating setup, not just an encoder setting. Keep the computer powered, disable automatic sleep, prevent unexpected shutdowns, and check that your playlist or media source repeats as intended. For an unattended machine, arrange for the encoder to start at boot, retain useful logs and alert you when it stops if you have a monitoring method.

Test recovery before relying on the setup: stop and restart the encoder, briefly interrupt the network if safe to do so, and verify what happens after a reboot. A process manager can restart a crashed process, but it cannot repair a bad media file, restore power, fix an ISP outage, make an invalid key valid, or reverse a YouTube interruption or rights takedown. Linux Mint and OBS do not guarantee continuous uptime.
Plan for YouTube’s archive limit
YouTube says livestreams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If keeping the full program matters, do not rely on one 24-hour event as your only copy. Schedule separate broadcasts shorter than 12 hours and/or make a local recording. YouTube recommends a local recording backup; check that the recording file is growing and is usable. An external SSD or hard drive can provide optional backup storage, but it is not required to send a livestream. Estimate storage from your recording bitrate and how long you want to retain files.

Clear music rights before going live
YouTube’s livestream terms require the content provider to have the necessary rights for live content, including music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers and other royalty participants. YouTube scans livestreams for third-party content. If a warning is not resolved, the broadcast may be interrupted or terminated; a copyright strike can also terminate a stream.

YouTube warns that a licensed stream may still be interrupted if the channel is not allowlisted. Attribution, buying a track, or seeing “royalty-free” on a music source does not by itself establish that continuous YouTube livestreaming is permitted. Check the actual license and any allowlisting requirements before broadcasting.

Troubleshoot common failures
