Update Hulu if your platform offers an update, then update the device’s system software. If Hulu still misbehaves, close and reopen it, check the connection, and clear its cache or data if those controls are available before removing and reinstalling it.
Hulu’s directions below were published August 28, 2026. Menu names can change with device and software updates; use the path for your platform and check the device maker’s current instructions if it differs.

Before you update or reinstall Hulu
- Identify the exact device and model. Hulu’s supported-device list covers platform families, not every model or generation. Check Hulu’s supported devices if Hulu is missing from the store or your device is older.
- Separate the app update from the system update. The first updates Hulu; the second updates the TV, player, phone, or tablet software. Hulu recommends checking both.
- Know that some TV apps update automatically. Hulu identifies LG and Samsung TV apps as automatic-update examples. Roku and Xbox One instructions in Hulu’s update article focus on checking the app version or updating the system rather than a separate manual Hulu update path.
Hulu lists Android phones and tablets, selected Android TVs, Apple TV (4th generation and newer), Chromecast, Fire tablets and Fire TV devices, iPhone and iPad, LG and Samsung TVs, PlayStation 4 and 5, Roku devices, VIZIO SmartCast TVs, Xbox, and other device types. Availability depends on the specific model. Hulu separately states that VIZIO Smart TV models released in 2016 or later are supported and have the app preinstalled on the TV home screen; verify current compatibility before relying on that model-specific detail.

Follow the section for your device. Some labels or locations may vary slightly by model and software version. These paths come from Hulu’s app and system update instructions.

Android phone or tablet
- Open Google Play Store.
- Open Menu → My apps & games.
- Select Hulu and tap Update if the option appears.
Android TV
- Go to Home → Apps → Google Play Store → My Apps and check Hulu for an update.
- To check the TV software, go to Home → Settings → Help → System Software Update → Check for a system software update → Upgrade Now.
Hulu says a software update on Android TV can take up to 60 minutes, depending on network speed.
Apple TV (4th generation and newer)
- Open the App Store and find Hulu under Purchased to check for an app update.
- For tvOS, go to Settings → System → Software Updates → Update Software. If Download and Install appears, select it.
Do not disconnect or unplug Apple TV until its software update finishes.

Chromecast
- Connect the phone or tablet you use to cast and the Chromecast to the same Wi-Fi network.
- In Google Home, go to Devices → your Chromecast device card → Device Card Menu → Settings to view the Cast firmware version.
- Update the Hulu app on the casting phone or tablet using the Android or iOS app-store path below.
Fire TV or Fire TV Stick
- If automatic App Store updates are off, go to Settings → Applications → Manage Installed Applications → Hulu to check manually.
- To check Fire TV software, go to Settings → Device → About → Software Version → Check for System Update.
Fire tablet
- Go to Home → Apps → Store → Menu → App Updates.
- Select Hulu and tap Update if available.
- To check the tablet software, go to Settings → Device Options → System Updates → Check now.
iPhone or iPad
- Open the App Store and go to Updates.
- Tap Update next to Hulu if an update is listed.
- For iOS or iPadOS, go to Settings → General → Software Update.
LG TV
Hulu says its app updates automatically; the latest version should appear the next time you open it. To check TV firmware, go to Home or press the smart button → Settings → All Settings → General → About this TV → Check for updates. Hulu recommends enabling Allow automatic updates.

PlayStation 3
Hulu says the app updates automatically when automatic updates are enabled. To check the console software, go to XMB → Settings → System Update → Update via Internet.

PlayStation 4
- Open TV & Video → All Apps.
- Highlight Hulu, press Options, and choose Check for Updates.
- To update the console, go to Settings → System Software Update.
Roku
To see Hulu’s app version, highlight Hulu on the home screen and press the * button on the remote. To check Roku software, go to Settings → System → System Update → Check Now → OK. Hulu’s published directions provide version-check and system-update steps rather than a separate manual Hulu-update path.
Samsung TV
Hulu says its app updates automatically. To check TV software, go to Menu → Support → Software Update → Update Now.

VIZIO SmartCast TV
Hulu says SmartCast TV firmware updates automatically. For details on your model, consult VIZIO support.
Xbox One
Hulu’s listed system-update path is Guide → Settings → All settings → System → Updates → Update console. Its update article does not give a separate manual Hulu app-update path for Xbox One.

Troubleshoot before reinstalling
A reinstall is not a fix for every playback problem. Work through the least disruptive checks first. Hulu’s general troubleshooting advice appears in its Cloud DVR troubleshooting guidance; the available settings differ by device.
- Check whether the issue is limited to one program. If you are troubleshooting a recording, try a different recording. A single affected title may point to a program-specific problem rather than the app installation.
- Fully close Hulu and other background apps, then reopen Hulu. Simply leaving the app on screen may not close it.
- Check for both app and system updates. Use the platform instructions above, where manual controls are available.
- Clear cache or data through the device settings if that option exists. Not every TV or streaming device exposes these controls, and their location varies.
- Check your internet connection. If other apps or services are also having trouble, reinstalling Hulu alone may not address the cause.
How to reinstall Hulu
Hulu’s update guide does not provide one universal reinstall sequence. The device’s app-management controls determine how to remove an app, and the steps can differ by model and software version. Use the device’s own controls rather than an unofficial installer:
- Open the device’s app-management settings or app list, select Hulu, and choose the available remove or uninstall option.
- Open the device’s official app store, search for Hulu, and install it if it is offered for your model.
- Open Hulu and sign in if prompted.
If Hulu is not offered in the official store, do not assume that a factory reset will make it available. Check your exact model against Hulu’s supported-device information and consult the device maker’s current instructions before considering a reset.

Contact Hulu if the app is unavailable on a device that should support it, or if it still fails after the update and troubleshooting steps. Hulu’s streaming-issues contact page offers a virtual assistant and a route to an agent. For firmware, app-store, or model-specific installation problems, the device maker may be the better contact.
Is Hulu being discontinued?
No. In a May 19, 2026 help article, Hulu said Hulu subscriptions and the Hulu app and website would continue, while further integration into Disney+ was planned by the end of 2026. Hulu + Live TV was still on Hulu at the time of that article; eligible subscribers could link a profile to Disney+ to explore some Hulu content there.
