These devices were compatible with iOS 11, but that does not mean Apple still offers iOS 11 for installation. In 2026, Apple’s normal update tools install the newest compatible software available for the device, not a user-selected historical release. Check Settings > General > Software Update first. If iOS 11 is not listed, install the version Apple offers instead; do not assume an IPSW file can force an older build.
iPhone 8 originally shipped with iOS 11, so it normally needs no upgrade to that version unless it has been restored or otherwise changed.

Which iPhones and iPads support iOS 11?
Apple announced iOS 11 as a free 2017 update for iPhone 5s and later, specific iPad families, and the sixth-generation iPod touch. The announcement is documented at Apple’s iOS 11 compatibility announcement.

The original iPad, iPad 2, iPad 3, iPad 4, and first-generation iPad mini were not compatible. If you are unsure which iPad you have, identify its exact generation or model number before trying to update.

Update or install: what is the difference?
- Update installs newer system software while normally retaining your apps, photos, and settings.
- Restore erases the device and reinstalls software, after which you must set it up again or recover a backup.
- Downgrade means installing an older release than the one currently installed. Apple does not provide a normal version picker for choosing iOS 11.
Most readers need an update, not a clean installation. Use Restore only as a recovery measure and only after confirming you have a usable backup.
Prepare the device before updating
- Back up first. Make an iCloud backup or an encrypted computer backup. A computer backup can be useful when iCloud storage is limited.
- Connect power. Keep the iPhone or iPad connected to a charger throughout the download and installation.
- Use reliable Wi-Fi. Wireless updating requires an internet connection; temporarily disable a VPN or proxy if it interferes.
- Free storage. Remove downloaded videos, podcasts, or large apps only after confirming important data is backed up. Apple may offer to remove apps temporarily and reinstall them after the update. See Apple’s update instructions.
- Have credentials ready. Know the device passcode and the Apple Account password. A restore does not remove Activation Lock.
- Choose a safe time. Do not begin immediately before travel, work, school, or another situation where the device is essential.
Update wirelessly from the iPhone or iPad
- Open Settings.
- Tap General, then Software Update.
- If Apple offers an update, tap Download and Install or Install Now. Labels can vary slightly by system version.
- Enter the passcode if requested and accept the terms.
- Leave the device on power until it finishes.
The device may restart more than once. An Apple logo and progress bar can remain on screen for a long time; do not unplug it merely because the process appears slow. It should eventually return to the passcode screen or the Hello setup screen.
Update with a Mac or Windows computer
macOS Catalina or later: Finder
- Connect the device with a USB cable.
- Open Finder and select the iPhone or iPad in the sidebar.
- Open the General tab and click Check for Update.
- Choose Download and Update and follow the prompts.

macOS Mojave or earlier: iTunes
- Open iTunes and connect the device.
- Click the device icon, open Summary, and select Check for Update.
- Choose Download and Update.
- Enter the passcode or approve Trust This Computer if prompted.

Current Windows computers
Apple now refers Windows users to the Apple Devices app; older installations may still use iTunes. The current device-connection guidance is at https://support.apple.com/en-us/118106.
Why iOS 11 may not appear
A missing iOS 11 listing does not automatically mean the device is defective. Common explanations include:

- The exact iPhone or iPad model was never compatible.
- The device is already running a later compatible release.
- Apple no longer offers iOS 11 to that device through its normal update servers.
- There is not enough free storage.
- Wi-Fi, a VPN, proxy, Apple’s servers, or security software is blocking the request.
- The device is organization-managed or has modified/jailbroken software.
- An app requires iOS 11, but the operating system itself does not.
If Software Update does not list iOS 11, there is usually no supported way to make Apple install that specific historical version. The practical choice is the latest compatible version Apple offers. This is consistent with Apple’s current update guidance at https://support.apple.com/en-la/118575.

An IPSW is an Apple firmware package used by device-management tools, but downloading one does not guarantee installation. During an update or restore, the device and Apple’s servers must accept and authenticate that build. A manually selected older file can produce errors such as “The device isn’t eligible for the requested build.”
Choosing Restore while using an IPSW erases the device. Avoid jailbreaks, modified firmware, bypass utilities, unknown firmware-hosting sites, and paid “one-click downgrade” tools as ordinary solutions. Use recovery mode when a normal update fails
Recovery mode is for repairing a failed or stuck update; it is not a reliable method for selecting an old iOS release. Connect the device to the computer, open Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes, and choose Update before Restore whenever both options appear.
iPhone 7
- Connect the iPhone to the computer.
- Press and hold the side/top button and Volume Down together.
- Keep holding until the recovery screen appears.
- Choose Update on the computer.
iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus
- Connect the device and open the computer’s device-management app.
- Press and hold Home and the top/side button together.
- Continue until the recovery screen appears.
- Choose Update first.
iPhone 8
- Connect the iPhone.
- Quickly press and release Volume Up, then quickly press and release Volume Down.
- Press and hold the side button until the recovery screen appears.
- Choose Update.
iPad with a Home button
- Connect the iPad to the computer.
- Hold Home and the top button together.
- When the iPad turns off, release the top button but keep holding Home.
- Release Home when the recovery screen appears, then choose Update.
Apple’s iPad recovery instructions, including models without a Home button, are at https://support.apple.com/en-la/108925. If recovery mode takes more than 15 minutes to download software and the device leaves the recovery screen, let the download finish and repeat the button sequence.
Update versus Restore

Troubleshooting checklist
- Confirm the exact model and its compatibility.
- Back up the device.
- Restart the device and try again.
- Check Wi-Fi; temporarily disable VPN, proxy, or third-party security software.
- Free more storage.
- Update macOS, iTunes, or Apple Devices.
- Try another trusted USB cable and USB port.
- Try a different trusted computer.
- Use recovery mode only after ordinary updating fails.
- Select Update before Restore.
If the Apple logo appears stuck
Do not immediately unplug the device. If there is no progress for several minutes, use recovery mode and attempt Update. Apple’s recovery guidance is at https://support.apple.com/en-us/118106.
If the device is jailbroken or modified
Unauthorized software can interfere with updating and may require a computer-based restore, which can erase the device and remove the modification. Do not attempt to preserve a jailbreak at the expense of an unverified backup.
When professional help is appropriate
Contact Apple or an authorized service provider if a damaged button, failing battery, defective charging port, repeated recovery errors, or forgotten ownership credentials prevent the process. Apple’s repair starting point is https://support.apple.com/repair.
