The message “Unable to Install Update. An error occurred installing iOS 12” is a generic failure, not a diagnosis. The safest sequence is to back up the device, confirm that its model supports iOS 12, check power, Wi‑Fi and storage, delete the incomplete download, and try again. If wireless installation still fails, update through iTunes (or Finder on newer Macs); if the device is stuck, use recovery-mode Update before considering Restore.
iOS 12 was released on September 17, 2018. Menu names and computer procedures can therefore differ from current Apple instructions.
What the message means
Several different failures can look similar:
- Unable to check for update: the device cannot obtain update information.
- Error occurred downloading: the package did not download completely.
- Unable to install update: the package downloaded but failed during preparation, verification or installation.
- Apple logo or progress bar: installation started but did not finish normally.
- Recovery-mode screen: iOS needs a computer-assisted update or restore.
The wording alone does not identify whether storage, networking, Apple’s servers, software or hardware is responsible.
Before troubleshooting
Confirm the model is compatible
Apple’s compatibility announcement lists iPhone 5s and later, iPad mini 2 and later, iPad Air and later, iPad Pro models, and the sixth-generation iPod touch as compatible, subject to the exact iPad generation: Apple’s iOS 12 compatibility list. The iPhone 5, iPhone 5c, fourth-generation iPad and first-generation iPad mini cannot install iOS 12. No storage change, DNS setting or IPSW file can make an incompatible device supported.

Back up first
If the device still starts normally, back it up to iCloud or a computer. Do not erase it simply because an update failed. In recovery mode, Update is the non-erase-first choice; Restore erases the device.
Prepare the connection
- Connect the iPhone or iPad to power and use a dependable Wi‑Fi network, not a captive-portal connection or personal hotspot.
- Temporarily disconnect a VPN, proxy or filtering service that could block Apple’s update servers.
- Open Settings → General → Date & Time and enable Set Automatically.
- Check Apple’s system-status page if a major release is experiencing congestion or an outage.
Try these low-risk fixes first
- Restart: on iOS 12, use Settings → General → Shut Down, power back on, then open Settings → General → Software Update.
- Retry on another trusted Wi‑Fi network. Airplane Mode can be turned on briefly and then off to refresh the connection.
- Check storage: open Settings → General → iPhone Storage or iPad Storage. Delete or offload large apps, downloaded media and attachments, and empty Recently Deleted photos when necessary. The update needs temporary working space; the often-repeated 5–7 GB figure is only a historical rule of thumb, not an Apple guarantee.
Changing DNS can be an uncommon network experiment, but it is not a standard first-line Apple fix.
Delete the failed download and download it again
A partial or corrupted package is a common reason an update reaches “Verifying Update” and then fails.

- Open Settings → General → iPhone Storage or iPad Storage. Older iOS 12 builds may show Storage & iCloud Usage → Manage Storage.
- Tap the listed iOS update, then tap Delete Update.
- Restart the device.
- Return to Settings → General → Software Update and download it again over reliable Wi‑Fi and power.
If no iOS update appears in storage, do not keep searching indefinitely. Check storage and networking once more, then move to a computer-based update.

When verification fails
For “Unable to Verify Update,” reconnect to a different trusted Wi‑Fi network, toggle Airplane Mode, restart, and delete/redownload the package. A computer update is the next practical test. If the device has a beta enrollment or configuration profile, identify why it is installed before removing it; make a backup first, because the profile can affect which build the device attempts to install.
Update with iTunes on Windows or older macOS
This was the normal iOS 12 computer workflow. Apple’s general guidance is at Apple’s update support page.

- Install a current iTunes release compatible with the computer’s operating system.
- Connect the device with a reliable USB cable and open iTunes.
- Select the device and open its Summary page.
- Choose Check for Update, then Download and Update.
- Enter the passcode if requested and leave the device connected until completion.
This can bypass an over-the-air download or storage problem, but a damaged cable or USB port, outdated iTunes, security software, insufficient computer storage, sleep or an untrusted device can cause a separate failure. Try another cable, port or computer if needed.
Current Mac equivalent
macOS Catalina and later use Finder rather than iTunes: connect the device, select it in Finder, open General, and choose Check for Update. macOS Mojave and earlier and Windows use iTunes. Apple’s Finder/iTunes instructions are documented at Apple Support.

If the device is stuck on the Apple logo
Force-restart button sequences
- iPhone 6s or earlier, and iPads with a Home button: hold Home + Sleep/Wake until the Apple logo appears.
- iPhone 7 or 7 Plus: hold Sleep/Wake + Volume Down until the logo appears.
- iPhone 8, 8 Plus, X and later Face ID iPhones: press and quickly release Volume Up, press and quickly release Volume Down, then hold the Side button.
- iPads without a Home button: press and quickly release the volume button nearest the top button, press and quickly release the other volume button, then hold the top button.
A force restart may allow a stalled device to reboot; it does not guarantee that the update completed.

Use recovery mode without erasing first
Important: choose Update before Restore. Update attempts to reinstall iOS without intentionally erasing personal data. Restore erases the device.
- Connect the device to a Mac or PC and open Finder or iTunes.
- Enter recovery mode using the model-specific button sequence documented by Apple’s recovery-mode guide.
- When the computer offers Update or Restore, choose Update first.
- Keep the device connected while the computer downloads and installs iOS.
- If the download takes more than approximately 15 minutes and the device exits recovery mode, let the computer finish downloading, then enter recovery mode again and repeat the update.
Use Restore only with a current backup or a clear acceptance that the device will be erased.
Computer error codes and persistent failures
Record the exact numeric code, where it appeared (download, verification, update or restore), the computer operating system and device model. Try another cable, USB port, trusted network and computer, and temporarily review security software or firewall interference. Avoid random IPSW files, unofficial mirrors and obsolete iTunes downgrades. A manual IPSW is an advanced option only when the file exactly matches the model and Apple is still accepting that build; Finder or iTunes Check for Update is safer for most users.

When hardware is the likely cause
- Recovery-mode Update fails repeatedly.
- The device loops on the Apple logo or disconnects during every attempt.
- Multiple trusted networks and computers produce the same result.
- Storage remains nearly full despite deleting content.
- The device has impact or liquid damage, battery problems or unexplained restarts.
At that point contact Apple Support or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. A restore cannot repair failing flash storage, a damaged connector or a logic-board fault.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an iPhone 5 or iPhone 5c install iOS 12?
No. iOS 12 starts with iPhone 5s; the iPhone 5 and 5c are unsupported.
Will deleting the iOS update delete my photos?
No. Deleting the downloaded update removes that package, not personal photos or apps. Back up before further troubleshooting.
Does recovery-mode Update erase data?
Update is intended to reinstall iOS without an intentional erase. Restore erases the device.

Only on a compatible device and only if Apple accepts the specific build for that device at the time you try. Availability can change.
Why does iTunes not recognize the iPhone?
Check the cable and USB port, unlock and trust the computer, update iTunes or macOS, and try another computer. Repeated disconnects can indicate hardware trouble.
