Yes, you can replace an n8n Docker container without losing workflows. Workflows, credentials, users, execution data, and the credentials-encryption key survive only when the persistent data location remains attached and unchanged. For the standard Compose deployment, the safe sequence is: review release notes, record the current image tag, back up the database and /home/node/.n8n, verify the volume and environment variables, pull the reviewed image, run docker compose down (without -v), start the new container, and verify migrations, credentials, and a test execution.

What actually preserves your n8n data
A Docker container is disposable. Its writable layer disappears when that container is removed. n8n data is durable only when it is stored outside that layer and mounted into each replacement container.

In the default SQLite deployment, the critical mount is /home/node/.n8n. It contains the SQLite database and the credentials-encryption key, along with other instance data. If a replacement container starts with an empty directory, n8n appears to be a new installation even though the old container has been removed cleanly.
n8n’s Docker guidance explicitly warns that the /home/node/.n8n directory must remain persistent even when you use another database, because it contains essential user data including the encryption key.

Before touching the running container
Read release notes and breaking changes
Do not begin with docker compose pull. First read the release notes for the target n8n version and check the project’s breaking-change notices. n8n’s official Docker guidance says to check for breaking changes before upgrading. Record the image tag currently running and the tag you intend to deploy. That gives you a known rollback target if startup or workflow checks fail.
Also note whether the change is a routine n8n image update or part of a larger change, such as a database engine upgrade, a queue-mode redesign, or a storage migration. Keep those changes separate whenever possible; diagnosing a failure is much harder when several moving parts change at once.

Inspect the Compose configuration that is really in use
Open the Compose file used to start the service and verify all of the following before editing it:
- The
imagepoints to the intended n8n image repository and tag. - The service still mounts
n8n_data:/home/node/.n8n, or the same bind-mount path used by your existing installation. - Every existing environment variable remains present, especially the setting that supplies n8n’s encryption key.
- PostgreSQL, Redis, queue, runner, and S3-related services or variables have not been accidentally removed.
- The project directory and volume names are unchanged. Running Compose from a different project name can create a different volume with a similar-looking name.
Render the effective configuration before the maintenance window with:
docker compose config
Look in the rendered output for the n8n service’s volume mapping and environment variables. This catches overrides, profiles, and variable substitutions that are easy to miss by reading only the base YAML file.
Back up a SQLite installation
Stop n8n before copying its SQLite volume so the database is not changing while it is archived. If the Compose file uses the named volume n8n_data, one practical archive command is:

docker compose stop n8n
docker run --rm
-v n8n_data:/source:ro
-v "$PWD/backups":/backup
alpine tar -czf /backup/n8n_data-$(date +%F-%H%M).tar.gz -C /source .
Use the actual volume name shown by your Compose configuration; do not assume that every project calls it n8n_data. If you use a bind mount instead of a named volume, make a filesystem snapshot or archive of that host directory after stopping n8n. Store the backup outside the Docker volume and confirm that the archive can be listed and read.
Stopping the service protects the SQLite file from an inconsistent copy. Keep the backup until the upgrade has passed workflow and credential checks; do not overwrite it with a post-upgrade copy.
Back up PostgreSQL separately
With PostgreSQL, the workflow records are in PostgreSQL, but the n8n data directory still matters for configuration and encryption material. Back up the database with your normal PostgreSQL backup process and retain the /home/node/.n8n mount as well. Confirm that the backup can be restored before relying on it.
Do not combine an n8n image upgrade with a PostgreSQL major-version migration unless you have a separate, tested migration plan. They have different rollback procedures and can fail for unrelated reasons.

Identify every n8n component before pulling an image: the main process, workers, and runners. In a scaled installation that uses external S3 binary storage, upgrade main, worker, and runner to the same n8n version simultaneously. Mixed versions can create protocol incompatibilities. Schedule enough time to restart all components and observe them together.
The safe Docker Compose update procedure
- Write down the current state. Record the currently running image tag, Compose project name, volume names, database type, and the target n8n tag. Keep the old tag available for rollback.
- Take the appropriate backup. Stop n8n for a SQLite volume archive. For PostgreSQL, complete a database backup and retain the n8n data-directory backup. For scaled systems, include the queue and external binary-storage recovery plan.
- Confirm the mount and key. Check that the service still maps the existing volume or bind mount to
/home/node/.n8n. Preserve the existing encryption-key environment variable and its value. Changing the key can make previously stored credentials impossible to decrypt. - Set a reviewed image tag. A controlled deployment uses a pinned tag in Compose, with the tag selected after reviewing its release notes. The image syntax is:
services:
n8n:
image: docker.n8n.io/n8nio/n8n:${N8N_VERSION}
volumes:
- n8n_data:/home/node/.n8n
Define N8N_VERSION in the environment used by Compose, or replace the expression with the exact reviewed tag. Keeping the tag explicit makes it clear what is running and makes rollback a one-line change. The floating stable/latest tag is simpler, but it can introduce an unplanned version during a later pull.

- Pull the image. For an explicitly selected release, pull the matching tag:
docker pull docker.n8n.io/n8nio/n8n:"$N8N_VERSION"
The official image documentation also supports pulling the stable image when your change policy permits floating tags. A pinned tag is preferable when you need a repeatable maintenance window.
- Recreate the container without deleting volumes. From the same Compose project directory, run:
docker compose pull
docker compose down
docker compose up -d
docker compose down removes the containers and the project network. It does not remove named volumes unless you explicitly request volume removal with -v. Never add -v during this update unless you intentionally want to delete the volume and have a tested restoration plan. Also check scripts and aliases: an automated wrapper may add volume-removal flags even when the command shown above does not.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Follow startup and migrations. Immediately watch the n8n service:
docker compose logs -f n8n
If you are not using Compose, use docker logs -f <container> with the actual container name. Wait for startup and database migrations to finish. Do not interrupt the process because a migration is still printing output; stopping it can leave the database in a state that requires restoration or a documented recovery procedure.
- Verify before declaring success. Confirm the expected n8n version in the user interface or startup logs. Open several important workflows, inspect nodes that use credentials, and run a safe test execution with non-destructive input. Check that credentials decrypt and that the expected executions and users are present.
After the basic checks, run n8n’s security audit. It can identify whether an instance is outdated and provides an additional signal that the intended version is actually active.
How to tell whether you attached the wrong volume
A fresh onboarding screen, missing workflows, absent users, or credentials that cannot be decrypted usually means n8n started against a new or different data location. Stop and investigate rather than creating replacement workflows, which can make recovery harder.
- Compare the volume mapping in
docker compose configwith the mapping from the last known-good deployment. - Check that you ran Compose with the same project name and from the same directory.
- Verify that the named volume exists and that its data directory contains the expected n8n files.
- Confirm that the encryption-key setting is present and unchanged.
- Review whether a bind-mount path was moved, renamed, or created empty by a host deployment script.
If the old volume still exists, stop the new container and correct the mount before attempting any data migration. If you deleted the volume, use the backup rather than trying to reconstruct credentials manually.

SQLite, PostgreSQL, and scaled mode: different upgrade decisions
SQLite: simplest deployment, strictest backup discipline
SQLite keeps n8n’s workflow database in the persistent /home/node/.n8n directory. A single-container Compose update is usually straightforward: stop, archive the volume, recreate the container, and let n8n run its migrations. The main failure modes are attaching an empty volume, losing the encryption key, or interrupting migration.
PostgreSQL: protect two pieces of state
PostgreSQL moves the primary database out of the n8n container, but it does not make the n8n data directory disposable. Preserve both the database backup and the mounted configuration/encryption data. Validate the database connection variables after recreation. Treat a PostgreSQL major-version change as a separate operation with its own backup, compatibility checks, and rollback plan.
Queue and runner deployments: version coordination matters
In queue or horizontally scaled mode, updating only the main container can leave workers or runners speaking a different protocol. With S3 binary storage enabled, n8n specifically requires main, worker, and runner to move to the same version simultaneously. Bring the coordinated set up, watch logs for each service, and test a workflow that exercises the queue and binary-data path.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choosing an update strategy
| Decision | Controlled option | Convenient option | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Image tag | Pin a reviewed n8n version | Use a floating stable/latest tag | Pinning improves repeatability and rollback; floating tags reduce editing but can change unexpectedly. |
| Container management | Compose with a recorded project file | Manual docker run replacement |
Compose makes mounts and environment variables reproducible; manual commands are easier to mistype. |
| Backup method | Database-aware backup or a verified volume snapshot | Manual archive before each upgrade | Automation improves consistency, while manual backups require a deliberate maintenance step every time. |
| Database | SQLite with a stopped-volume backup | PostgreSQL with a tested dump and persistent n8n directory | PostgreSQL separates database operations from the container, but adds its own backup and upgrade responsibilities. |
| Topology | Single instance | Main plus workers/runners | Scaling improves throughput but requires coordinated image versions and broader verification. |
Rollback when the new image fails
Keep the previous image tag and the pre-upgrade database or volume backup until verification is complete. If startup fails or a workflow behaves unexpectedly:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Stop the new n8n container and preserve its logs for diagnosis.
- Change the Compose image back to the previous known-good tag.
- Start the stack again without deleting volumes.
- Determine whether the new image completed database migrations before restoring anything.
- If the schema or data changed, restore the backup only with a documented recovery plan; do not blindly overlay an old database on a migrated one.
- When possible, test restoration and rollback on a copy of the volume or database before touching the production data.
A container rollback is not automatically a database rollback. The image can be reverted in seconds, while a migration may require restoring the pre-upgrade database and the matching encryption data. That is why the backup must exist before the first pull or startup.
Troubleshooting common upgrade failures
“My workflows disappeared”
The new container is almost certainly using an empty or different data location. Compare the old and new mount declarations, Compose project names, and host paths. Stop n8n, reattach the original volume, and restart. Do not import or recreate workflows until you have confirmed the original data is unavailable.
Best Value
“Credentials cannot be decrypted”
Check the encryption-key environment variable and the persisted /home/node/.n8n directory. The database alone is not enough: n8n needs the same encryption key used when the credentials were stored. Restore the original key and data directory, then restart.
“The container keeps restarting during migration”
Read the complete service log, verify that the target image is compatible with your current release, and ensure the database is reachable. Do not repeatedly start and stop the container while a migration may still be running. If the failure cannot be resolved, use the previous image and the pre-upgrade backup according to the rollback plan.
“Only some workers process jobs”
In a scaled deployment, check that main, workers, and runners all report the same n8n version and that queue and database connection settings are identical. If S3 binary storage is enabled, mixed versions are especially risky because of protocol incompatibilities.
“docker compose down removed my data”
By itself, docker compose down removes containers and networks, not named volumes. Data loss generally comes from adding -v, deleting a volume separately, changing the project or volume name, or using a new bind-mount path. Inspect the exact command and Compose file used by automation, not just the command you intended to run.
A repeatable maintenance checklist
- Release notes and breaking changes reviewed.
- Current image tag recorded for rollback.
- SQLite volume or PostgreSQL database backed up and the backup verified.
/home/node/.n8nmount confirmed unchanged.- Encryption-key setting and all existing environment variables retained.
- Queue, worker, runner, and S3 components identified if the deployment is scaled.
- Reviewed image pulled from
docker.n8n.io/n8nio/n8n. docker compose downrun without volume removal, followed bydocker compose up -d.- Startup logs and migrations watched to completion.
- Version, workflows, credentials, users, and a safe execution verified.
- Rollback tag and pre-upgrade backup retained until the instance has operated normally.
Key points to remember
Updating n8n on Docker is a container replacement, not a data migration, when the persistent storage and encryption settings are preserved. The standard Compose sequence is docker compose pull, docker compose down, and docker compose up -d; named volumes remain unless you explicitly remove them. The decisive safeguards are a tested backup, an unchanged /home/node/.n8n mount, a retained encryption key, a reviewed image tag, and verification after migrations. For scaled deployments using S3 binary storage, upgrade main, worker, and runner together on the same version.
