Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTo update RouterOS safely, back up the router, choose the right release channel, install the update through System → Packages or the CLI, let the router reboot, and verify the installed package version and logs. MikroTik also strongly recommends updating RouterBOOT after RouterOS. The steps below cover routine updates as well as the extra checks needed for a v6-to-v7 migration or a manual package install.
Before you update
Record the router’s current state
Note the RouterOS version, device model, architecture, and selected update channel before making changes. In WinBox or WebFig, find the architecture under System → Resources. Recording these details helps you select the correct package if you need a manual update and gives you a baseline for checking the result. MikroTik’s upgrade and installation documentation describes the update methods and package requirements.

Make and protect a backup
Create a RouterOS backup before changing packages, and store it somewhere secure: MikroTik warns that binary backups contain sensitive device information. Its backup guidance recommends restoring a backup on the same RouterOS version. If you use Dude or User Manager, preserve their configuration separately because some of their data is not included in a system backup.
Plan a production rollout
For a production network or a complex configuration, test the update on a locally tested device first, verify the services and functions your network relies on, and then proceed in groups rather than updating every router at once. MikroTik gives this incremental approach in its TR-069 guidance.

- Dimensions: 113x89x28mm; Storage size: 16 MB; Passive PoE (PoE in); PCB temperature monitor, Voltage monitor and Mode button
Choose a release channel
In the built-in updater, the channel determines which releases the router checks for. Choose according to your tolerance for change, not simply because a channel offers a newer version.
| Channel | What it means | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Long-term | Changes less often and receives critical fixes. | When you prefer a slower-moving release branch. |
| Stable | Includes tested features and fixes. | For routine updates when you want the regular tested release track. |
| Testing | Receives only basic internal testing; MikroTik does not recommend it for production. | For evaluation where testing releases is acceptable. |
| Development | Exposes raw changes. | For development and testing, not routine production use. |
Channel availability can vary. Read the offered version and its changelog before installing; the channel descriptions and updater behavior are documented by MikroTik.
Extra checks when moving from RouterOS v6 to v7
Treat a major-version migration as more than a routine patch update. MikroTik recommends first moving v6 to a current v6 stable or long-term release. It says most otherwise functional configurations convert automatically, but that is not a guarantee for every setup. Review compatibility for services and features you depend on, with particular care if the router uses MPLS.

Check available memory before moving to v7: MikroTik says it does not recommend running v7 on hardware with less than 64 MB of RAM. This is the vendor’s compatibility recommendation, not a measured success rate. See the RouterOS v7 migration guidance.
Update through WinBox or WebFig
- Open System → Packages.
- Choose Check For Updates, select the intended channel, and review the offered version and changelog.
- Choose Download and install if you want to download the update and then reboot manually, or Download&Install for automatic reboot after a successful download.
- Allow the router to restart, then verify the installed version and check the log as described below.
The update feature connects to MikroTik’s download servers from the router itself, not from the computer running WinBox or WebFig. The router therefore needs network access to those servers. Do not interrupt the process or remove power while the router is installing and restarting.
Update from the CLI
Use the package update menu to inspect the channel and available update, then install only after confirming the offer is appropriate:
- Open the update menu with
/system package update. - Set or confirm the intended channel, then run
check-for-updates. - Review the reported status and offered version. If it is the release you intend to install, run
install. - Let the router reboot, then verify packages and inspect the log.
MikroTik documents scripted update examples that check status before installing. An automated script should not be treated as universally safe: test the workflow on your own equipment and network before allowing unattended upgrades.

A manual update is useful when you need package-level control or cannot use the built-in updater. It also makes you responsible for selecting the correct architecture and package set.
- Find the router architecture in System → Resources.
- On MikroTik’s official Software page, download the RouterOS main package for that architecture, plus any extra packages currently installed on the router.
- Transfer the files to the router using WinBox, WebFig, or FTP.
- Reboot the router to install the uploaded packages.
- After restart, check the installed package version and log.
MikroTik documents an install ignore-missing option for installing the main package while omitting packages that were not uploaded. That is not the default for a complete update: if you use extra packages, include the matching packages for the router’s architecture unless you deliberately intend to omit them. The official upgrade instructions describe manual transfer and the updater. They identify HTTPS as the suggested updater mode and recommend certificate checking.

Verify RouterOS after the reboot
Check package versions in the CLI
Run /system package print to see installed package versions and their state. You can also run /system resource print, which includes the RouterOS version. These commands and the package listing are covered in MikroTik’s Packages documentation.
Check the version in WinBox
After a manual upgrade and reboot, the new version appears in the WinBox window title and in the Packages menu. If package versions do not match what you expected, use the package listing and logs rather than assuming that a reboot alone confirms a successful install.
Read the installation log
Run /log print or open the Log view and look for the package installation result. MikroTik says package-installation log entries can confirm success or explain conflicts and requirements. Use those details to decide what to fix before trying again.

If the updater does not show a new version
- Check the channel. The selected channel controls which releases are offered, and channel availability can vary.
- Check router connectivity. The router—not just your computer—must be able to reach MikroTik’s update service.
- Check DNS resolution. MikroTik’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking whether the router can resolve
upgrade.mikrotik.com. Do not treat an IP address shown in an older example as a permanent endpoint; see the version-detection troubleshooting article. - If installation reports an error, inspect the log for the specific conflict or requirement instead of repeatedly retrying without addressing it.
/system/check-installation is a separate integrity diagnostic for file readability and placement and NAND/flash health. It is not the normal command for checking which RouterOS version is installed; version checks belong to the package or resource listing.
Update RouterBOOT after RouterOS
RouterOS and RouterBOOT are distinct components. After RouterOS is updated, review the RouterBOARD status and follow MikroTik’s recommendation to upgrade RouterBOOT, then reboot. MikroTik states that upgrading the bootloader after a RouterOS update is strongly recommended; see its upgrade documentation.
