To update a Microsoft Store app by hand, open Microsoft Store and go to Library, then select Get updates on Windows 11. On Windows 10, Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance uses a different path: See more, then Downloads and updates, then Get updates. To have Store apps update on their own, open Store Settings and turn App updates on. Not every app follows that setting, because some publishers update their apps inside the app itself.
Check for Store app updates manually
Microsoft’s general support page for this task tells you to open Microsoft Store and select Check for Updates. The exact label you see depends on your Windows version and the current Store layout, so the steps below follow the navigation Microsoft documents for each system.

On Windows 11
- Select Start and open Microsoft Store.
- Select Library in the left navigation.
- Select Get updates. Store checks for and installs available updates for apps it manages.
On Windows 10
Microsoft’s troubleshooting article documents an older route for Windows 10:

- Select See more.
- Choose Downloads and updates.
- Select Get updates.
If the menu on your copy of Store does not match these labels, look for the Library or Downloads and updates entry and the Get updates or Check for Updates button. Microsoft’s Store pages do not show a publication date for these steps, so the labels may change with later Store releases.

Turn on automatic Store app updates
Automatic updating for Store apps is a single setting, and Microsoft’s “Turn on automatic app updates” page describes the same steps for Windows 11 and Windows 10:
- Open Microsoft Store.
- Select your profile or account picture, then select Store Settings.
- Set App updates to On.
Turning this setting off stops Store from applying app updates on its own, so you will need to use the manual steps above to bring apps current.

Apps that update outside the Store
The automatic setting covers apps delivered through Microsoft Store. Some publishers update their apps through the app itself. Microsoft’s support page says: “Some app publishers manage their own updates through their app.” If an app was not installed from the Store, or it does not change when you run a Store check, look for an update option in the app’s own menu or settings, or follow the publisher’s instructions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance for Store apps works through a sequence of checks. Try them in this order:

- Sign in with a Microsoft account. Then close the app completely and reopen it.
- Check whether Windows is up to date. Store updates depend on a current operating system.
- Confirm the app supports your Windows version. An app that has dropped support for your release may not offer a newer build.
- Update Microsoft Store itself. On Windows 11, use Library > Get updates. On Windows 10, use See more > Downloads and updates > Get updates.
- Repair or reset the app, if the problem persists. Microsoft’s guidance covers both options for apps that fail to open or update.
- Reinstall the app from your Store library if repair and reset do not help.
- Run the Windows Store apps troubleshooter if you are on Windows 10. Microsoft’s Windows 10 section includes this step.
Keep Windows Update separate from Store updates
Windows Update installs operating system updates. Microsoft Store updates apps. If Store app updates keep failing and Windows itself cannot install updates, troubleshoot Windows Update as a separate problem, since Store checks will not fix it.

Microsoft says support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft no longer provides free software updates from Windows Update, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. That statement concerns Windows support. It does not mean that Store apps on Windows 10 stop receiving updates on that date, so check each app’s own requirements if an update is missing.
